Infonetics: Telecom capex will spike this year
Vendors across the communications ecosystem have complained during the first half of this year about slow telco spending. But the capital expenditures (capex) should start flowing again soon, according to Infonetics Research’s new report, Service Provider Capex, Revenue, and Capex-by-Equipment-Type."We're expecting a telecom capex hike in 2012 as operators around the world ramp their spending like crazy to launch LTE networks, modernize their mobile networks, and carry out national wireline broadband initiatives. Operators have to invest in their networks or they'll disappear -- competition is too cut-throat not to," notes Stéphane Téral, principal analyst for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics at Infonetics Research.As Téral’s comment implies, much of the spending will target wireless network expansion. Wireless operators' share of capex will grow from a quarter to nearly a third of global capex between 2012 and 2016, Infonetics predicts."High demand everywhere for telecom services, particularly mobile broadband, is fueling the latest investment cycle,” explains Téral. “The key capex contributors in 2012 will be Clearwire, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA in the US; NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile in Japan; and KT, LGU+, and SK telecom in South Korea. China recently revealed a US$58 billion economic stimulus package to fund a fresh round of investment in telecom infrastructure. Meanwhile, Europe's Big 5 have increased capital intensity by 2 percentage points for the first time in 5 years, right in the middle of the critical economic downturn! As for Latin America, operators already spiked, with capex there up 25% in 2011, led by América Móvil and Telefónica."The expected upturn in 2012 follows a growth year in 2011, when global telecom carrier capex grew 3% versus 2010 to $301 billion. With the exception of TDM voice, which saw its capex share plummet, spending on every type of network equipment grew in 2011. However, Infonetics expects worldwide capex spending to level out in 2015 and 2016 at around $345 billion.

Infinera shipping DTN-X
Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) says it has begun shipments of its DTN-X platform to customers for deployment. The company says it also has the system in several trials and has received purchase orders from new and existing customers.The company has already announced Cable&Wireless Worldwide and DANTE as DTN-X customers. Both represent new business for Infinera (see “Cable&Wireless Worldwide chooses Infinera's DTN-X for Europe Persia Express Gateway” and “DANTE selects Infinera DTN-X platform for GEANT Research and Education Network”).Infinera introduced the DTN-X, a large-scale packet-optical transport system, in September of last year (see “Infinera debuts DTN-X packet-optical transport platform with 500G PIC, OTN/MPLS support”). The platform leverages Infinera’s latest 500-Gbps photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and superchannel capability, along with integrated OTN switching and GMPLS control plane. The company says that integrated MPLS switching is on the roadmap as well. Meanwhile, users can adjust the modulation format to link requirements via Infinera’s lexCoherent technology."While our competitors talk about their roadmaps for metro 400-Gbps superchannels, Infinera is delivering the industry's first 500-Gbps long-haul FlexCoherent superchannels," said Dave Welch, co-founder, executive vice president, and chief strategy officer at Infinera. "With DTN-X, we are also bringing the largest capacity OTN switch to market and delivering the industry's first deployable FlexCoherent capability. Infinera delivers on the capabilities that help service providers scale, simplify and make their networks more efficient to lower overall lifecycle TCO."

Infracom opts for Ekinops for metro and access networks
Italian telecom and datacom provider Infracom is upgrading its metro and access networks with the installation of the Ekinops 360 transport system, the French systems house has announced.Infracom is based in Verona, and has branches throughout Italy, including Milan, Florence, Imola, and Rome. The provider offers communications, networking, and ICT services, including managed and outsourced services, to companies in a variety of industries. Its 9,000-km fiber-optic backbone network connects major cities throughout the country.Infracom has installed the Ekinops 360 platform to achieve more efficient and cost-effective service delivery, according to the vendor. The Ekinops 360 transport system provides CWDM and DWDM in a single platform, enabling Infracom to bring a wider variety of services, including Ethernet and Fibre Channel, to its ustomers."We are committed to constantly upgrading our infrastructures in order to provide better and more efficient services to our customers.
