DANTE selects Infinera DTN-X platform for GEANT Research and Education Network
Research and education network operator DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe) has selected the DTXN-X platform from Infinera Corp. (NASDAQ: INFN) for the  pan-European GÉANT network that it operates on behalf of Europe’s national research and education networks (NRENs).GÉANT directly connects 17 major European cities in 16 countries across 12,000 km of fiber. Together with Europe's NRENs, the network provides connectivity for 40 million researchers and millions of students in over 8,000 institutions across 40 countries. Some of the world’s largest scientific institutions rely on GÉANT’s network, including CERN for its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) research, and the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (EVN) for radio astronomy research.Following a rigorous competitive bidding process, DANTE selected the new Infinera DTN-X platform to deliver the scalability, simplicity, and efficiency demanded by researchers conducting some of the world’s most advanced scientific experiments. Infinera’s DTN-X platform will enable GÉANT’s to support multi-terabit transmission The optical layer of GÉANT’s network transports massive amounts of data to support experiments and applications that are crucial to academic research. The LHC is one of the largest scientific experiments in the world, generating about 25 petabytes of data per year. Many of these experiments require large amounts of bandwidth very quickly, and a key factor in DANTE’s selection of the DTN-X was “Bandwidth Virtualization” which leverages integrated OTN switching and a GMPLS control plane to deploy large amounts of optical bandwidth rapidly.Infinera’s DTN-X platform will also deliver long-reach 500-Gbps FlexCoherent superchannels across routes on GÉANT’s network, such as the 1,240 km Frankfurt to Copenhagen route, scaling the capacity of the network while lowering operational costs. The DTN-X is upgradeable to 1-Tbps long-reach superchannels and MPLS switching in the future, providing scalability with investment protection.“We are impressed by Infinera’s PIC technology and the DTN-X platform,” said Michael Enrico, CTO at DANTE. “From significantly simplifying our operations and reducing the time to deploy bandwidth to fundamentally lowering our total cost of ownership –these were all factors that we considered against more conventional competitors.”

JJuniper doubles the capacity of T Series core routers
Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) has unveiled a capacity upgrade to the TXP multi-chassis routing system for all existing Juniper Networks T4000 and T1600 core routers. The company claims that the upgrade delivers unmatched system scalability and helps operators protect their investment in equipment by extending the lifespan and performance of their network.Multi-chassis systems continue to be a critical technology for service providers to scale their network infrastructure while ensuring operational continuity and optimizing capital expenditures. The new TXP system more than doubles the capacity of the previous technology generation. This capacity upgrade can be completed in-service, providing service providers with the financial and operational flexibility to expand network capacity as and where required.Since the first shipment in 2002, well over 7,000 T Series routers have been deployed in the top 200 networks worldwide, Juniper asserts. The company says its T Series IP/MPLS multi-service core routers provide the features and multi-terabit scale that service providers need to handle massive growth in core bandwidth requirements. The field-proven in-service upgradability provides customers guaranteed access to future T Series platform innovation, resulting in investment protection, the company says. The TXP multi-chassis routing system also simplifies pay-as-you grow installation and expansion with standards-based cabling and pluggable optics, according to Juniper. The TXP multi-chassis routing system supports up to four T4000 and eightT1600 routers, giving a total multi-system capacity of up to 22 Tbps. In future, capacity will be expandable up to 64 Tbps."In order to scale their networks today, large service providers use the multi-chassis capabilities of their core routers, as scaling requirements continue to grow,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst, Infonetics Research. “Juniper's expansion of the TXP multi-chassis system will help operators meet their growth challenges due to the TXP's flexible scaling, operational continuity, and investment protection -- three components of any service provider's expansion strategy. This latest generation TXP features the innovation in the multi-chassis interconnect of off-the-shelf pluggable optics and industry-standard cabling to reduce the cost and operational complexity of deploying and managing multi-chassis systems."

IFN taps Ciena for packet-optical upgrade
Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) says Indiana Fiber Network (IFN) will deploy Ciena’s 5430 Packet-Optical Reconfigurable Switching System (RSS) and OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane software to expand the capacity and service flexibility of its backbone network, and provide assured service delivery.IFN is a statewide fiber-optic network owned by a consortium of 20 independent telephone companies, and comprises more than 2,400 miles of fiber-optic cable that interconnects eight metro ring networks and 23 points of presence serving more than 3,300 on/near-net locations. Customers include enterprise businesses, government entities, educational and healthcare institutions, as well as independent telephone company members, who use the network for the aggregation and transport of residential local and long-distance calls, Internet access, and video services. The enhanced OTN-switched network will support the aggregation, transport, and management of voice, video, and data services to business and service provider customers. It will also provide differentiated service offerings and simplified service creation capabilities through point-and-click provisioning, therefore creating bandwidth-on-demand services that can be delivered in minutes, Ciena says.Ciena’s 5430 is a modular packet-optical platform that will serve as aggregation switches, delivering regionalized OTN and Ethernet traffic to key points in IFN’s network with speed and simplicity (see “Ciena intros modular approach to IP/optical networks”). Equipped with OneConnect control plane software, the 5430 switches will also provide IFN with the ability to automate provisioning and management of its network, while mesh restoration will improve network resiliency and service availability.Combined with Ciena’s 4200 Advanced Services Platform, which has already been deployed in the network, IFN can support customers’ growing broadband demands and data center connectivity requirements via a scalable, dynamic, and reconfigurable infrastructure, Ciena asserts.Later this year, IFN also plans to deploy Ciena’s 5410 Reconfigurable Switching System to enable efficient aggregation, grooming, and forwarding of multiple traffic types in metro and regional sites.Ciena Specialist Services is providing solution installation, turn-up and testing, along with migration services.“Our recent upgrade is designed to create an intelligent, automated network that can adapt to the diverse service requirements of our customer base – including both member companies and businesses – and be monitored, managed and reprogrammed remotely from our network operations center,” said Jerry Haver, planning and engineering manager, IFN.
