RIO touts transceiver designs for 1,550-nm 10G SFP+ and 2.5G DWDM SFP
The reference design package includes transceiver schematics, bill of materials, and layout files. The company's 10GbE TOSA product line is offered in both standard commercial operating temperature (-5° to +75°C) and an extended industrial temperature (-40° to +85°C).RIO is also offering a 2.5G DWDM SFP transceiver reference design package for long transmission distances from 120 km up to 640 km. According to the company, this design is suited for extending the reach of metro area network (MAN) applications and eliminating the need for expensive signal regeneration stations.RIO's 2.5, 4.25, and 10G TDM and DWDM TOSA products are manufactured on a proprietary hybrid integrated optical platform that enables high performance, quality, and reliability in a small package and at low cost. All of the products are RoHS compliant.RIO plans to demonstrate its PLANEX technology this week at OFC/NFOEC 2007 tradeshow in Anaheim, CA. In Booth #1901, the company will showcase its directly modulated 10-Gbit/sec 1,550-nm ECL TOSA in a 10GbE 40-km (10GBase-ER) SFP+ MSA pluggable transceiver module.
Mitsubishi Electric announces long-distance DWDM SFP transceiver
Carriers have been rushing to expand metro area fiber-optic communications networks with recent increases in traffic due to the spread of ADSL, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), and other high-speed, large volume communication services to the residential market. To further increase the transmission volume of metro area optical transmission devices, manufacturers have been looking for a DWDM device that is small with low power consumption that can also transmit long distances.Mitsubishi Electric started production of the SFP MSA-compliant MF-27WXE series DWDM optical communication transceiver in April of this year. With the new MF-27WXE series, Mitsubishi Electric claims to have developed two devices aimed at further increasing transmission distance to 160 km. With these two new products, Mitsubishi Electric says its lineup of 2.5-Gbit/sec, SFP MSA-compliant transceiver modules increases to six. 
Historically, transmission distance of 2.5-Gbit/sec DWDM optical transmission transceiver modules has been limited to 120 km because of light waveform degradation from optical fiber wave dispersion properties affected by charp at time of modulation. By using a semiconductor laser developed in house that reduces charp as well as optimizing laser driver circuitry, Mitsubishi says it has developed a transceiver module capable of 160-km transmission.The transceiver is capable of transmission speeds from 100 Mbits/sec to 2.7 Gbits/sec, just like previous devices. This simplifies constructing optical transmission systems of varying transmission speeds, such as Fast Ethernet, SONET STM-1/SDH OC-3, STM-4/OC-12, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, STM-16/OC-48, and OTN-1, say company representatives.
By including industry SFF8472 standard-compliant digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) function, it is possible to monitor operating conditions of the module. This means a smaller, denser, lower cost module since an external monitoring circuit is no longer needed, says Mitsubishi.
OE Solutions expands bi-directional single fiber SFP transceiver line
Earlier this year, the company introduced its OBT12SLX product family, which addressed the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) Standard, supporting 1000Base-BX10-U for 10 km upstream applications over a single strand of singlemode fiber. The company says its product offering has now been expanded to include Fast Ethernet, OC-3, Gigabit Ethernet, and 1-Gbit Fibre Channel interfaces with reaches as far as 40 km, and OC-48 and 2-Gbit Fibre Channel interfaces with reaches as far as 15 km. According to the company, all transceivers conform to the SFP Multi-Source Agreement and support a standard temperature range of -5 to +75 degrees Celsius, an extended temperature range of -10 to +85 degrees Celsius, or an industrial temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius."Single fiber solutions are fast becoming a key technology for point-to-point applications where fiber management and fiber exhaust are a growing concern," maintains Mike Fukatsu, director of sales and marketing for OE Solutions. "An industrial-temperature, bi-directional SFP solution can help lower the infrastructure costs of active Ethernet FTTP deployments, and help increase capacity in FTTN applications, without requiring a costly system redesign."The company says that technology it originally developed for passive optical network (PON) applications was leveraged to create this latest portfolio of products."Gigabit Ethernet transmission over 40 km on a single fiber is now a commercial reality," concludes Moon Soo Park, CTO of OE Solutions. "And with support for hardened environments, applications in remote terminal and outside plant applications can now operate with half the required fiber."
