Euronews: Huawei, ZTE to Share $1.3B Project
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763), Alcatel-Lucent(NYSE: ALU) and Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) are the big fish straining the net in today's trawl of the EMEA headlines.
Huawei and ZTE may be going through the political wringer in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. at the moment, but it's business as usual in Africa. Bloomberg reports that the pair are close to signing a two-year vendor-financed deal with the Ethiopian government, thought to be worth around US$1.3 billion.
Alcatel-Lucent has introduced nine new Application Programing Interface (API) variants that are intended to give developers easy access to core IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) elements in 4G networks. Called "New Conversation APIs," they relate to applications for high-definition voice and video, audio/video conferencing, interactive voice, messaging and call control.
Telefónica is to sell its Atento contact center business to Bain Capital for $1.3 billion, reports Reuters. The deal is part of the Spanish giant's plan to cut its debt, which stands at a hefty €57 billion ($74 billion).
U.K. fiber provider Hyperoptic claims to have signed up more than 30 of "the most significant property developments" in London to take its 1-Gig FTTH offering. On the strength of these agreements, it is forecasting that within five years its 1-Gig connection will be available to half a million U.K. homes.
Netgem , the French set-top box firm, has posted third-quarter revenues up 24 percent year-on-year to €20.1 million ($26 million). On a nine-months comparison basis, however, revenues are down 2 percent year-on-year to €58.2 million ($75.4 million).
And finally... France's Bouygues Telecom has been doing its best to boost its ARPU -- it sent a bill for €11,721,000,000,000,000 to unemployed childminder Solenne San Jose, reports The Guardian. "I nearly had a heart attack," said Solenne, though presumably she said it in French. Her actual bill was €117.21 -- still enough to give any unemployed person Le Bill Shock.
