Colba.Net selects Zhone Technologies’ MXK Platform for ADSL2+ and Ethernet
Colba.Net Inc., Quebec Internet service provider Colba.Net Telecom Inc.’s subsidiary, has deployed the MXK multi-service access node (MSAN) system from Zhone Technologies Inc., a provider of FTTx network access tools, to enable Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL2+) and Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) services for local residences and businesses.Colba.Net offers VoIP and high-speed ADSL2+ Internet access services with up to 24 Mbps connectivity to its approximately 400,000 customers in Montreal. By using Zhone’s MXK access concentrator, Colba.Net has been able to increase bandwidth and reach, lower service delivery cost, and provide advanced services to its customers, says a representative.“We are experiencing a change in our customer behavior and rapid growth on our network in Quebec and we needed a broadband solution that provided us with a scalable and reliable platform for future growth of our advanced communications services,” says Joseph Bassili, chief executive officer, Colba.Net. “We recognize the solid relationships Zhone has established with service providers globally and its ability to scale cost-effectively with a proven multi-service access solution was a key factor in our decision to partner with them.”Zhone’s MXK platform provides seamless support for extreme bandwidth demands generated by multiple high-definition television (HDTV) screens, high-definition digital video recorder (HD-DVR) content, and video streaming within the home. The MXK is equipped to address Colba.Net’s field requirements to provide optimum cost efficiency and maximum service differentiation, as well as minimize customer impact and installation time for current services and new advanced services that may be added, according to a representative.“Colba.Net needed a scalable solution for their network. The MXK system provides the cost efficiency needed to deliver advanced triple-play services to Colba.Net’s customers in a highly competitive price range. Plus, given MXK’s market-leading, multi-service capability, Colba.Net can seamlessly upgrade to fiber when the need arises,” says Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone.Zhone’s multi-service access platform supports multiple services on the same platform--including ADSL2+, VDSL2, GPON, Active Ethernet, and EFM--and provides service providers like Colba.Net with a tremendous return on investment, given the utilization of existing copper infrastructure, simplicity in installation and provisioning, high reliability with minimal downtime, ease of management, and significant cost savings. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability, and switching capacity, the MXK is the industry's first terabit access concentrator and provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers.

Zhone launches Zhone FiberHome brand of FTTX gear
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) has unveiled new fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC), fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) products as well as a new brand name, Zhone FiberHome.Despite the name (which is not to be confused with FiberHome, the Chinese platform vendor), Zhone FiberHome will include copper-based technology as well as fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) equipment.“We’re seeing service providers start to aggressively lay new fiber networks. However, in specific instances, new fiber networks can become cost prohibitive and the ability to use deployed copper to provide advanced multi-play services becomes imperative,” Zhone chief marketing officer Brian Caskey explains. The first products within the initial phase of the Zhone FiberHome rollout will provide VDSL2 and Active Ethernet connectivity in the last mile in a 1U form factor. The VDSL2 product is based on VDSL2 30a and will enable up to 100 Mbps of symmetrical connectivity, the company asserts. “Zhone has become a worldwide leader in the FTTH space in the past year thanks to the strong success of its MXK Terabit Access Concentrator platform – which supports not only GPON and Active Ethernet but also ultra-high-speed copper connectivity – and Zhone is well-positioned to generate additional customer and market traction on the strength of its new FiberHome solution set,” said Erik M. Keith, principal analyst for fixed access infrastructure at market research firm Current Analysis. “Zhone’s FiberHome solution provides operators with cost-effective technologies that enable incremental revenue generation from their network investments – whether a fiber overlay or enhanced utilization of existing copper. Finally, the FiberHome portfolio delivers the much-needed extended network/serving area reach that is critical for advanced triple-play applications – most notably, high bandwidth video services – and early reviews of the FiberHome portfolio indicate that Zhone’s customers will find success in doing so.”

LIME’s East-West cable enters service
FEBRUARY 4, 2011 -- LIME, Cable & Wireless Communications’ business in the Caribbean has completed the installation of its new East-West undersea cable system linking Jamaica, the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. The East-West cable will also link Jamaica in the west of the Caribbean to the British Virgin Islands (Tortola) in the East, completing the connection in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. It will triple available bandwidth and reduce interconnection costs in the Dominican Republic, a key market in the region.Accomplished in less than six months and ahead of schedule, the cable system completes a Caribbean “network ring” that increases LIME’s capability to serve carrier customers in North and Latin America, as well as within the Caribbean. The undersea cable enables LIME to meet the rising demand for high-speed bandwidth from consumers and business customers in the region. LIME operates in 13 Caribbean countries, and is developing a range of new fixed broadband and mobile data services for customers, which will require high-quality capacity support. The new cable is the third new submarine cable built by LIME in the region since 2008, adding to the CBUS cable between Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands and the Gemini-Bermuda cable between Bermuda and the east coast of the US.“LIME’s network is well positioned to benefit from growth in wholesale markets. The Caribbean is a major traffic corridor between South America and the major internet, content and carrier hubs in the United States--acknowledged as one of the fastest growing inter-continental routes in the world today,” says David Shaw, chief executive officer, LIME.In hailing the project as a text book undertaking, Shaw says, “The East-West Cable is a valuable addition to our carrier network, increasing the capability and service LIME provides to our carrier customers throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.”“Our investment in the East-West Cable attests to the growing demand for capacity in the region,” says Martin Fijman, LIME managing director, carrier services, says. “The cable will provide leading-edge broadband capacity and reliable network services to help fulfill that market demand. LIME will keep enhancing its wholesale proposition as we keep leading the provision of capacity, connectivity, and carrier services within the region.”
