JDSU adds VDSL2 features to SmartClass triple-play services handheld tester
JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU; and TSX: JDU) has added the ability to perform tests over VDSL2 networks to its SmartClass Triple-Play Services (TPS) handheld tester. The features enable technicians to identify potential copper impairments such as disturbers, bad joints, or bridged taps using DSL QLN and Hlog graphs. The one-button Pass/Fail CableCheck functionality includes balance testing and good ground check capabilities, JDSU adds. The SmartClass TPS can now be used to test all broadband triple-play services using an all-in-one tool for copper, fiber, POTS, ADSL2+/VDSL2, IP data, VoIP, and IP video, JDSU asserts. The tool includes a web browser, multiple HDTV streams, VoIP emulation G.722 call controls, fiber test, result file transfer, a customizable user interface, and field upgrades via USB Host 2.0 interface.

owernet launches fiber-to-the-cabinet service
UK ISP Powernet will now offer fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) FTTX connections. The uncapped FTTC service will support download speeds of up to 40 Mbps and uploads of up to 10 Mbps. The new FTTC package is available at £49.99 per month with an unlimited usage allowance, Powernet says.Tony Tugulu, founder and CEO of Powernet said: "Until now, both smaller businesses and those with branch networks have been forced to turn to one of the larger ISPs to receive top broadband speeds in many areas of the UK. The advent of FTTC is game-changing, giving smaller, innovative, service-based ISPs such as Powernet the opportunity to match the broadband speeds offered by the larger ISPs.”

Unite Private Networks to provide fiber-optic WANs to Illinois schools
Unite Private Networks (UPN) will provide data services over a fiber-optic wide area network (WAN) for five new school districts in Illinois: Darien, Antioch, and River Forest Schools in the Chicago area, and Canton Union and Galesburg near Peoria, Ill.The five districts each signed a long-term agreement, whereby UPN will greatly enhance its existing Illinois network.“We are excited about the long-term solution and partnership UPN is providing,” says Guy Cahill, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, for Galesburg Schools. “The UPN WAN is a key and first component in the District’s larger 20-Year Master Facility Plan. Their unique value proposition allowed the school district to develop a long-term plan for the whole district.”“Due to shrinking budgets, Illinois School Districts are forced to do more with less. That has inspired new creative technology initiatives providing cost savings and operational efficiencies and of course, that means more data across networks,” explains Judy Gallagher-Cosgrove, vice president business development for UPN. “It is exciting to know that we provide the foundation to their solution.”“With more cloud computing, VoIP, and security systems eating up valuable bandwidth, we are looking forward to having UPN as our long-term solution. The proposed fiber network will give Canton Union District #55 enough bandwidth for years to come,” says Don Howell, technology director.“Our expansion into the Illinois market continues to pay dividends with many districts demanding dedicated WANs instead of the typical Cable or ILEC options,” notes Rob Oyler, chief marketing officer at UPN.UPN provides high-bandwidth, fiber-based communications networks to schools, government, carriers, data centers, hospitals, and enterprise business customers.
