AOI Targets WDM-PON
SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AOI), a leading manufacturer of laser diodes, photodetectors, and optical modules for fiber optic communications systems, today announces a small form-factor pluggable transceiver designed for operation in colorless Optical Networking Terminals (ONTs) used in Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Networks (WDM-PONs).The new transceiver incorporates a specially-designed laser diode that accepts an injection-locking signal from a transmitter in the head-end portion of the WDM-PON. The transmission wavelength of the laser diode locks onto the wavelength of this locking signal. By utilizing this transceiver in the ONT, it is possible to design a single, “colorless” ONT that can operate at any wavelength needed in the upstream direction of the WDM-PON.The current device supports WDM-PON applications where the upstream signals are in the optical C-band (from 1533-nm to 1560-nm) and the downstream signals are in the optical L-band (from 1573-nm to 1600-nm).The device is electrically hot-pluggable and communicates over the 2-wire serial interface as specified in the SFP Multi Source Agreement. Digital diagnostic monitoring is provided in compliance with SFF-8472.The current devices operate at speeds up to 125 Mbps and have fiber pigtails for flexible installation options within the ONT.“AOI believes strongly in WDM-PON technology,” comments Dr. Chau-Hong Kuo, Transceiver Product Manager at AOI. “We believe that this new transceiver will accelerate the development of this next-generation PON technology by allowing our equipment manufacturer customers to build their systems around a pluggable standards-based SFP solution.”
Opnext Demos 40G, SFP+
EATONTOWN, N.J. -- Opnext, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPXT), a global leader in state-of-the-art laser technology, today announced it will debut multiple live demonstrations at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) being held September 22-24 in Brussels, Belgium. The demonstrations will highlight key optics technologies, including 40G DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) long haul modules and a complete portfolio of SFP+ (Small Form Factor Pluggable) extended reach modules.Opnext will feature the following demonstrations at the exhibition:43G Tunable 5x7" 300-pin Transponder using phase shift keying and incorporating the SFI-5 interface for DWDM applications: Demonstrating this technology will be the Opnext TRV7BB0. This transponder makes possible the move from discrete components to an integrated solution for up to 43G line-side applications.Opnext will also demonstrate the industry’s broadest portfolio of SFP+ extended reach modules. The compact size and low power consumption of these SFP+ transceivers enable system designers to increase the density of high speed networking systems. For Storage Area Networks, Opnext offers a full range of 8GFC modules. Additionally, Opnext’s portfolio covers 10GbE SFP+ modules ranging from long reach single mode fiber applications to short reach multimode fiber transmission as well as long reach multimode (LRM) and even a cost effective ultra short reach option. These transceivers offer exceptional optical, EMI, jitter and power consumption performance for additional flexibility in system design."Opnext understands that its customers must balance performance, cost, and power across a diverse profile of networks," said James Horiuchi, senior vice president of global sales at Opnext. "Not only does Opnext offer the most 10G options available on the market to enable developers to optimize their system offerings, its high-capacity manufacturing capabilities and robust laser technology guarantee the highest reliability for the lowest cost."
Finisar Demos FCOE
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Finisar Corporation (FNSR - News), a global technology leader in fiber optic communication and test and measurement solutions for high-speed networks, today announced its participation in the Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Plugfest hosted by the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA). Finisar is providing a lead testing role by demonstrating its 10G SFP+ short reach transceiver, Xgig® protocol analyzer, Laserwire(TM) active optical cable, and Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite in a live FCoE environment. The FCoE Plugfest is being held on September 15-18 at the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL).This event is the first industry interoperability test of FCoE technology. FCoE intends to provide IT professionals with a simple migration path from their existing SAN infrastructure onto a converged Ethernet based network, combining both Fibre Channel and Ethernet fabrics. This technology will provide greater efficiencies by reducing cables and hardware equipment and simplifying datacenter management, while maintaining their investment in native Fibre Channel and Ethernet products and training. As the market share leader in SAN protocol analysis, Finisar enables its Network Tools customers to reduce critical design time and costs without sacrificing product reliability and quality. During the Plugfest, Finisar will demonstrate test and analysis tools including:Xgig®, a powerful unified multifunction platform used for design, test, verification and compliance of the FCoE protocol; anMedusa Labs Test Tool Suite, a series of benchmark speed, data integrity and application based stress test tools that allow test and interoperability engineers to better develop and validate quality products in real SAN environments in a shorter time frame, for faster time to market.Finisar also provided optics for connecting the FCoE network. The optics, which will enable high-port density and low power FCoE solutions, include:10G SFP+ short reach (SR) transceivers that will play a key role in transporting 10GBASE-SR Ethernet traffic (the underlying foundation of FCoE) between switches and adapters; and Laserwire(TM), the first serial 10 Gbps active optical cable product designed to accelerate and support 10G Ethernet server and FCoE connectivity. Laserwire is a plug-and-play datacenter cable solution that provides lightweight, flexible, low-power consumption connectivity from 3 to 30 meters. It does not require host-board receiver equalization compared to alternative solutions."Finisar is very excited to participate in the first industry wide Plugfest devoted to making FCoE a reality," said Paul Hansen, vice president of Network Tools marketing at Finisar Corporation. "Our breadth of products and solutions for FCoE truly demonstrate our commitment to forging innovative technologies in the datacenter and beyond."
