Huber+Suhner rises 3.3% on high volatility and expanding price range
Huber+Suhner AG (HUBN.S), Switzerland's 4th largest technology company by market capitalisation, traded between an intraday low of CHF39.05 and a high of CHF40.80. The price range has expanded in the last two days (from 80.0c two days ago to CHF1.80 today) which, accompanied by a price rise, is a bullish signal. The average daily volatility of 3.1% places the stock in the 2nd quartile in the market meaning it is moderately volatile. Today its volatility (highest price minus lowest price/lowest price) of 4.5% was 2.8 times the average daily volatility of 1.6%, up from 1.3% on Monday and 2.2% on Friday. A price rise on high volatility is a bullish signal. The stock price added CHF1.30 (or 3.3%) to close at CHF40.80. Compared with the Swiss Market index SMI Price index, which rose 12.4 points (or 0.2%) on the day, this was a relative price change of 3.1%.
Fibertech Networks Diversely Builds Fiber to DuPont Fabros Technology's New Jersey Data Center; Builds on Company's Strategic Direction of Providing Unique Connectivity to Major Data Centers in NY Metro
Fibertech Networks, a leading provider of metro-based fiber optic network services to customers in the Eastern and Central United States, today announced it has completed its diverse fiber optic connection into DuPont Fabros Technology's ("DFT") New Jersey data center ("NJ1") located in Piscataway, New Jersey. This complements Fibertech's strategic direction of bringing fiber directly into NJ1 to offer its customers high-speed connectivity and low latency solutions."Fibertech's unique footprint makes it an ideal competitive provider for new and existing tenants looking for metro fiber connectivity within our NJ1 data center," said Vinay Nagpal, Director of Carrier Relations for DFT. "We are focused on delivering highly specialized, secure, network-neutral facilities and are pleased to welcome one of fastest growing metro providers throughout the Northeast corridor.""DFT's NJ1 data center is one of the largest, most sophisticated and efficient facilities available in the Greater Metro New York Area," said Mike Hurley, VP Sales and Marketing for Fibertech. "With more than 1,100 miles of fiber throughout New Jersey, Fibertech will be able to offer a suite of low latency optical solutions as well as dark fiber connectivity for unlimited bandwidth to DFT's tenants."He added, "We will continue to bring our high-speed optical network to major data aggregation points throughout our footprint in an effort to meet the growing bandwidth demands of both carrier and enterprise customers. In doing so, our differentiation comes from our ability to extend the benefits of the data center's reliability and cost-efficiencies to business locations throughout the area."DFT's carrier and enterprise customers will have access to Fibertech's New Jersey metro networks as well as other major east coast metropolitan areas.
Bit-Interleaved PON offers dramatic FTTH power savings, says GreenTouch
GreenTouch, a global consortium focused on energy reduction in information and communications technology (ICT) networks, has unveiled a new PON technology it says will reduce the power consumption of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks by as much as 30X. Bit-Interleaved Passive Optical Network (Bi-PON) technology, created by Greentouch member Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs with the assistance of IMEC Ghent University in Belgium, reduces power consumption in the optical network units (ONUs) at the customer premises by making it easier for the ONUs to sift through incoming data to identify and process transmissions intended for it.As described in an article in Alcatel-Lucent’s TechZine online publication, Bi-PON uses the same architecture as standard PONs, in which a single optical line terminal (OLT) sends traffic via splitters to multiple ONUs. However, unlike conventional PONs, which require a significant amount of high-speed and parallel processing to sift through the incoming transmission for the data of interest, the Bi-PON protocol enables the ONU processor to quickly find the data intended for delivery. Use of Bi-PON therefore reduces clock speed, data processing, voltage, and memory requirements, and obviates the need for a standard deserializer. The resulting power savings can be significant, Bell Labs and GreenTouch assert. For example, ONU power requirements can be reduced from the 2 W or more that XG-PON ONUs will demand to less than 200 mW, the Bell Labs article predicts.GreenTouch has released details of a demonstration of such savings. IMEC, French research organization INRIA, and Orange Labs partnered with Bell Labs in the demonstration, which compared the operation of XG-PON and Bi-PON. A video of the demonstration can be found on GreenTouch’s YouTube page. While such power savings should prove appealing to both carriers and regulatory authorities, the technology currently is a long way from commercial deployment. For example, most carriers probably won’t deploy the technology until it runs the standards gauntlet. That process could take three to five years, according to Teresa Mastrangelo of market analysis and consulting firm Broadbandtrends LLC. That might push commercial availability of the technology out to the end of the decade, she estimates.
