Broadcom intros 100G full-duplex network processor
Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) has introduced what it claims is the industry's first 100-Gbps full-duplex network processor unit (NPU) that will enable the next wave of 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) optimized switches and routers for service provider networks. The fully programmable BCM88030 family features 64 custom processors running at 1 GHz, delivering more than twice the throughput of any NPU on the market, according to Broadcom. The company also claims that the BCM88030 has the industry's highest level of integration, thus eliminating external components and reducing system cost and power by up to 80 percent per 10GbE port.Built on the XGS Core packet processing architecture, the BCM88030 family delivers a feature-rich application at 100GbE full duplex for complex service provider switching and routing requirements, Broadcom continues. It incorporates an array of high-speed processors, multi-threading, and hardware acceleration for functions such as packet parsing, classification, and look-ups. The BCM88030 family is completely user programmable, enabling a highly flexible forwarding NPU that ensures support for the most demanding applications, both existing and future, Broadcom asserts. The BCM88030 NPU family also includes a proprietary algorithmic look-up engine using DDR-3 DRAM that enables scale for Layer 2, IPv4, and IPv6 tables while reducing system cost. Algorithmic on-chip access control list (ACL) capability is available along with seamless expansion using Broadcom's NL566xx knowledge-based processor (KBP).Other features include:Integrated OA&M engine, 1588 timing, and Synchronous Ethernet, 10GbE.  SerDes and 1/10/40/100GbE Ethernet MACs that reduce board space, system cost, and power. Seamless integration with XLP multi-core processors for control plane processing. The BCM88030 family consists of three devices: the 100-Gbps BCM88038 NPU, the 50-Gbps BCM88034 NPU, and the BCM88032 24-Gbps NPU. All devices are now sampling with production volume slated for the second half of 2012.

NIAID chooses Fujitsu for healthcare optical network
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has chosen technology and services from Fujitsu Network Communications for a multi-node regional fiber-optic network. The high-speed network is designed to enable researchers to access and share data residing in remote datacenters.Fujitsu will supply its FLASHWAVE 7420 Metro/Enterprise WDM Platform, NETSMART 1500 Management System, and a varity of professional services for the network, which will be capable of transmitting data at 40 Gbps with sub-microsecond latency. The network also will supply multi-protocol, multi-application support as well as remote monitoring and management.NIAID conducts and supports research to study the causes of infectious and immune-mediated diseases, and to develop better means of preventing, diagnosing and treating these illnesses.“Many organizations today are not looking for a vendor, they’re looking for a partner,” said Paul Fagan, senior vice president of sales at Fujitsu Network Communications. “Our work with NIAID is a prime example. We are working side-by-side to architect the network, implement the technology - both hardware and software - and train staff. Our commitment is to ensure NIAID’s fiber-optic infrastructure fully supports the critical work being done there.”Fujitsu’s FLASHWAVE 7420 DWDM platform includes reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology and supports Ethernet, SONET/SDH, G.709 OTN, ATM, video, and SAN protocols. Its NETSMART 1500 carrier-class management system will enable NIAID to remotely monitor, manage, provision, and maintain the FLASHWAVE 7420.In addition to planning and deploying network hardware and software, Fujitsu professional services will provide training on application and equipment engineering, turn-up, operations, and maintenance.

GigOptix ramps production of 40G, 100G bundled products
Semiconductor supplier GigOptix, Inc. (NYSEAMEX:GIG) says its 40G and 100G bundled products will simplify product evaluation and enable faster time to market for its customers. The company’s bundled offerings include a thin-film polymer-on-silicon (TFPS) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), the corresponding MZM drivers, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), and their respective bias boards for a number of popular 40G and 100G modulation formats.GigOptix offers three bundled product sets: GLX4220, a 40G DQPSK set that comprises one LX8220 TFPS MZM, one GX62255 MZM driver, and one GX3222B TIA GLX4320, a 40G RZ-DQPSK offering that comprises one LX8230 TFPS MZM, one GX62255 MZM driver, one GX6255 clock driver, and one GX3222B TIA  GLX1420, a 100G DP-QPSK set that includes LX8240 TFPS MZM, two GX62255 MZM drivers, and two GX3222B TIA“GigOptix is uniquely positioned amongst optical subcomponent vendors in that we provide the majority of the high-speed optical-electronic interface devices such as drivers, TIAs and modulators,” said Andrea Betti-Berutto, CTO at GigOptix. “This not only provides us with an in-depth appreciation of our customers’ system level challenges but also enables us to optimize the design and features of our TIAs, drivers, and modulators to improve performance and power efficiency, and to reduce customers’ R&D costs and development cycles by providing complete validated bundles for customers to utilize in their designs.”The existing optical subcomponent ecosystem requires customers to source their MZM, driver, and TIAs from three different vendors before beginning work on making the devices interoperate in a design, the company explains. The bundled offers will make it possible to fast track this design effort. The bundled products have been fully tested for component interoperability and with reference designs to ensure quick turn on and ease of use, the company adds.
