Sunrise Telecom unveils broadband test management tool
MARCH 10, 2009 -- Sunrise Telecom Inc. (search Lightwave for Sunrise Telecom) has announced realGATE, a management system for the company's broadband test sets, including the CM1000, CM2000, and the CM2000E. The Web-based system is designed to save time by centralizing essential information while streamlining and improving existing broadband testing approaches. According to Sunrise Telecom, realGATE enables faster problem isolation, reduces truck rolls, and saves time and money for communications carriers delivering broadband services to the home."Ensuring your field technicians have the latest tools to diagnose and correct broadband and digital voice service issues is critical to achieving customer satisfaction and keeping operational costs in check," said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, broadband and video, Infonetics Research. "realGATE gives technicians and operators a complete field testing solution that feeds into a central data repository so network issues and their solutions can be discovered faster, eliminating multiple service calls and unnecessary CPE swaps."The realGATE Web application runs on a server that can be set up to allow simultaneous access by both field based technicians and internal personnel. New firmware can be easily downloaded to the field, providing the latest enhancements and configurations available, Sunrise Telecom says. Instant communication with the server gives field techs the information that they need to deliver the quality of service that customers demand. Delivering faster time to repair increases customer satisfaction and can significantly reduce churn rates, the company asserts."As new services and technologies are deployed over broadband networks, testing and monitoring become more complex. Multiple truck rolls and extensive correlation and analysis can add time and costs to network management and service deployment," said Bahaa Moukadam, Sunrise Telecom's vice president of marketing. "realGATE provides a 360 degree view that improves field operations, ensures state-of-the-art testing, and enables managers to streamline operations to improve efficiency."The scalable realGATE is designed to enable users to start gradually and scale up as the system grows. Uploaded test results are made available to any technician as a reference point for addressing future service activations or repairs. The ability to access both current and historical information from any location helps technicians isolate problems more quickly and reduces the time spent troubleshooting in the field, Sunrise Telecom adds. All data is stored in a MySQL open source database, which makes realGATE easy to integrate with workforce software, billing systems and other third party applications, says the company.
JDSU expands SmartClass handheld tester
AUGUST 26, 2009 -- JDSU (search Lightwave for JDSU) has expanded functionality of its SmartClass Triple Play Services (TPS) test instrument, an all-in-one handheld tool for the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of IP video, VoIP, IP data, ADSL 1/2/2+, and copper services.New functions include an integrated web browser for ease of use and verification of on-site subscriber web site access; field-tested copper tests, including CableCheck and balance tests that provide one-button, pass/fail copper verification; a Broadcast Auto feature that simplifies IPTV testing and automatically detects IP stream formats; and a Packet Capture feature that enables technicians to capture data for offline analysis in the back office."JDSU continues to provide the market with the broadest range of triple-play test options that address the full range of requirements for today's network installer," says Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "The new features make the SmartClass TPS that much more powerful while remaining easy to use, helping field technicians install, test, and maintain IP services quickly and cost-effectively."The SmartClass TPS provides triple-play services testing with quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) functionality, advanced IP video analysis including the ability to test multiple HDTV streams, VoIP phone emulation, and a built-in USB Host 2.0 interface for file transfer.Advanced test applications include IPTV quality testing for broadcast and video-on-demand streams (including VMOS and MDI-MLR), the ability to assess VoIP packet stream quality using MOS and R-Factor as well as network delay analysis, IP Data Throughput Rate verification using FTP or HTTP tests, and the ability to test these services over an ADSL2+ or Ethernet 10/100 interface.
Tollgrade intros Stratum platform for triple-play testing
AUGUST 28, 2009 -- Tollgrade Communications Inc. has launched a new service assurance platform called Stratum. Stratum is designed to help telecom providers integrate new IP-based network testing initiatives with existing platforms, thus providing integrated test analysis across a variety of access technologies. The Stratum service assurance platform has been designed to support end-to-end diagnostics for triple-play services with the goal of providing telecom operators with a higher degree of reliable service delivery.Tollgrade says Stratum will support multiple data inputs from a customer's network and test resources -- including Tollgrade's existing 4TEL, Celerity, and LoopCare software platforms and test probes -- and perform combinational expert system analysis of faults in the access network to enable more effective dispatching of field resources.Stratum is currently being deployed in trials with customers in the United States and South America. It is expected to be generally available to the market by the end of this year."This will be the first release of Tollgrade's software platform strategy to support testing of next-generation architectures and services. Stratum is one part of our strategy to support the transformation of Tollgrade's telecom business," said Joseph Ferrara, Tollgrade's chairman, president, and CEO.Commenting on Stratum, Patrick Kelly, research director and industry analyst at Analysys Mason, said, "Tollgrade has developed this platform with the needs of the customer service organization in mind, ensuring those teams have the information to know the root cause of a trouble report, and how to quickly and effectively respond to it. This customer service response is especially important for supporting complex triple-play services such as IP video where fast fault isolation is necessary to get customers' service restored as quickly as possible."Added Chris Barton, Tollgrade's executive director of technical marketing, "Based on a representative model, the Stratum platform can achieve operational payback in 12 to 18 months. In addition, we anticipate ongoing development of this product line through various partnerships in an effort to widely deploy this software system test solution."
