JDSU expands video test offering for Microsoft Mediaroom customers
SEPTEMBER 3, 2009 -- JDSU has extended its offering of communications test and measurement products used in support of Microsoft's Mediaroom platform for IPTV services. The offering now also includes NetComplete Home Performance Monitoring (PM), part of JDSU's service assurance system.NetComplete Home PM is designed to give operators full performance management visibility from a central location into the actual experience of broadband, voice, video/IPTV, and video on demand (VOD) services in a home environment to proactively pinpoint, isolate, and resolve issues that might affect service quality of experience (QoE) for consumers.JDSU will be exhibiting its portfolio of test solutions and services at Broadband World Forum 2009 in France, September 7-9, booth # 621."JDSU test solutions are a natural fit for the Microsoft Mediaroom platform," said Dan McCrary, director of partners and business development for Microsoft. "JDSU's ability to give an in-depth, end-to-end view of service performance all the way into the home will help ensure the quality of Mediaroom's multi-featured IPTV functions and services."In addition, JDSU says the NetComplete Home PM enables operators using Mediaroom to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by reducing repeat rates, reducing mean-time-to repair (MTTR), and improving customer care support activities with better access to in-home performance data.

EXFO OTDR characterizes FTTH networks
MARCH 3, 2009 -- EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (search Lightwave for EXFO) has released the FTB-7300E PON-Optimized OTDR for characterization of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks and live-fiber troubleshooting.EXFO's FTB-7300E FTTx OTDR, based on its high dynamic range and high resolution at low pulses, can generate a sharp trace within 15 sec for end-to-end characterization of an optical link, even testing through a 1x64 splitter, the company asserts. It is therefore well suited for network operators in their efforts to provide end users with quality of service (QoS) while reducing operating expenses.The PON-optimized OTDR also features a power meter option and live port testing (1625 nm or 1650 nm, out of band) that enables field technicians to troubleshoot a live PON without interfering with other signals at 1310, 1490, and 1550 nm.The FTB-7300E FTTx OTDR, hosted inside the FTB-500 Platform, FTB-400 Universal Test System, or FTB-200 Compact Platform, will be showcased at OFC/NFOEC 2009, booth No. 1035, from March 24-26, 2009, in San Diego.

GAO Tek releases new optical multimeter for fieldwork
AUGUST 14, 2009 -- GAO Tek Inc., a supplier of optical power meters, has released an optical multimeter designed for fieldwork. The meter measures optical loss and checks the performance of optical parts. It is suitable for singlemode-fiber measurement and provides a wavelength calibration function at four wavelengths. Its small size and light weight allow it to be used anywhere, says GAO Tek.The model 2498A optical multimeter can be used as an optical power meter, a stable light source, or a loss measurement system. It provides continuous-wave (CW) mode light signals; it offers a measurement resolution of 0.1 dBm to 1 dB in W display mode or 0.01 to 0.1dB in REL display mode; and it carries out optical loss measurement at 0.85, 1.30, 1.31, and 1.55 µm, with a measurement range of +3 to -70 dBm or +20 dBm to -50 dBm.The deviation of the optical power sensor is compensated automatically. The optical meter features a backlit LCD screen and selectable power sources: AC adapter, rechargeable Ni-Cd battery, and dry cells.
