VI Systems, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign demo photonic crystal VCSEL
VI Systems GmbH and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois used the recent Photonics West Conference to demonstrate an 850-nm singlemode photonic crystal vertical cavity surface emitting laser (PC VCSEL). The device can transmit a 25-Gbps signal over 1 km of multimode fiber. The PC VCSEL was manufactured via a proprietary VI System’s wafer processed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a defined photolithographic pattern of holes in the top mirror. Operating at a current density of 5.4 kA/cm2, the device supports -3-dB bandwidth of 18 GHz.The partners reported error-free transmission at 25-Gbps over 1-km of OM4 multimode fiber at a received power of only 70 µW. The demonstration took place at the Department of Solid State Physics at the Technical University of Berlin using a high-speed photoreceiver module from VI Systems. The singlemode VCSEL extends reach over multimode fiber by eliminating the effects of chromatic dispersion at 850 nm, the partners say.

Sterlite, Tongguang joint venture starts fiber production
Jiangsu Sterlite Tongguang Fiber Co. Ltd. (JSTFCL), a joint venture of Indian fiber manufacturer Sterlite Technologies Ltd. and Chinese fiber-optic cable provider Jiangsu Tongguang Communication Co. Ltd. (TGCl), has begun to produce optical fiber itself at its facility in Haimen, Jiangsu Province, China. The factory, which the JV parents invested $25 million to set up, is capable of manufacturing 5 million km of fiber annually and employs 90 people. It will target fiber-optic requirements in China, which the partners say amounts to more than 100 million km a year. The two companies created the JV in 2010, with Sterlite the majority partner at 75% (see "Sterlite Technologies, Tongguang Communication to form joint venture for optical fiber in China"). A bigger presence in China is one reason Sterlite is participating in the venture. TGCl’s fiber cable manufacturing expertise and market reach in China should help achieve that goal, the companies believe."This joint venture leverages the strengths of two great companies to offer high-quality and competitive optical fiber to our China customers," said Pravin Agarwal, whole-time director at Sterlite. "Additionally, it strategically positions both companies for global growth in the telecommunications segment.""This partnership combines the expertise of both companies to become a technology leader for the global market," said Tang Jinming, chairman of Jiangsu Tongguang Communication. "We look forward to continued cooperation and innovation with Sterlite to provide our customers the best in class products at competitive prices."

Optical hardware sales shrank in 2012, confirms Dell'Oro
Sales of optical transport equipment declined 4% in 2012, according to a new report from Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm placed the blame on a significant decline in sales of SONET and SDH equipment.“An overall market decline of 4% was pretty good considering that legacy equipment sales declined 30% in the year,” said Jimmy Yu, vice president of optical transport research at Dell’Oro Group. “Fortunately, optical network equipment continues to be needed even in soft economic times so long as consumers increase their use of high-bandwidth access devices such as home broadband and smart phones. The demand for more bandwidth has driven an increased need for WDM equipment, which continued a positive trajectory in the year; growing 8%.”The North American and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) markets took the brunt of the declines, each shrinking 12%. Overall, the weakness in these regions offset year-on-year growth in Asia Pacific (5% year on year) and Rest of World (2% growth).Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel-Lucent held the top three spots globally for the year, with a combined market share of nearly 50 percent. Huawei was tops in all regions of the world except North America, where Ciena earned first position, followed by Fujitsu and Cisco. The Dell’Oro Group Optical Transport Quarterly Report provides tables covering manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, unit shipments (by speed up to 100 Gbps). It tracks DWDM long haul terrestrial, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers (SONET/SDH), optical switch, and optical packet platforms.
