COCONUT project to develop coherent ultra-dense WDM-PON
Optronics Technologies SA says it has kick started the research project “COCONUT,” a WDM-PON development effort funded by the European Union within the 7th Framework Programme for research and technological development.Optronics is the project’s dissemination leader. COCONUT was inaugurated on November 1, 2012, has a duration of 36 months, and the level of funding provided by the EC is approximately €2.7 million.“COCONUT” is a delightfully approximate acronym for “COst-effective COhereNt Ultra-dense-WDM-PON for lambda-To-the-user access networks.” The aim of the project is to define, study, and realize a fully scalable optical broadband access network that significantly extends the network dimensions in terms of bandwidth use, reach, and number of accommodated users. The envisioned access network technology evolves from the almost-commercial WDM-PON architecture to the realization of the ultra-dense WDM approaches, opening the way to the “wavelength-to-the-user” concept. The key enabling technology will be a new cost-effective coherent detection scheme. This will apply well-known concepts to implement inexpensive, yet effective, coherent terminals suitable for mass deployment. Although conceptually complex, these terminals must be compatible with the cost levels typical of low-cost consumer electronics. The resulting technology must be compatible with existing passive optical network (PON) infrastructures.By tackling the issues of extended PONs (extended in number of users, bandwidth and reach) and of cost and energy-consumption in the processing electronics of the optical networking unit (ONU), COCONUT plans to develop the enabling technology for an ultra-dense WDM-PON that retains a high total capacity and long reach, but provides transmission at a line rate equal to the user bandwidth at each wavelength. The COCONUT project consortium consists of academic and industrial partners active in the field of fiber access networks, including one major network operator (British Telecom), one system supplier (Ericsson AB), one commercial provider of advanced photonic devices (III-V Lab) and two SMEs (Promax Electronica SA and Optronics).Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSA) in Italy will act as the project coordinator. The other academic partners include the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain, and Athens Information Technology centre (AIT) in Greece.
AFL unveils new Fujikura 12S fusion splicer
AFL claims that the new Fujikura 12S is the world’s smallest, lightest, and most portable fusion splicer. At just 4.76 inches W x 6.38 inches D x 2.24 inches H, the full-featured fusion splicer is designed to increase efficiency in the field. With its fully ruggedized chassis, the 12S provides exceptional protection from shock, dust, and moisture while its transit case offers multiple options to optimize available work space, AFL asserts. The work tray can be placed on top of the transit case or used independently, and for maximum portability the 12S fusion splicer can be detached completely.Retaining the Fujikura two-camera observation system, the Fujikura 12S fusion splicer has several enhanced features:new Li-ion battery provides 3X more power than older versions, yielding up to 100 splice cycles the 4.5-inch high-resolution LCD monitor is 3X larger than previous screens with no glare under direct sunlight refinements in the arc calibration and optical systems have extended the electrode life to 3,000 splices – 3X longer than previous models splicing and tube heating are 20% faster software updates are available via the Internet for quick access to the latest splice programs.AFL concludes that the Fujikura 12S fusion splicer is the ideal splicer to use when portability, ruggedness, versatility, and reliability are needed in splicing applications.
Federal agents raid Agiltron
Federal agents descended today on the Woburn, MA, headquarters of Agiltron Inc., a company that makes optical components, optical switches, and other photonic devices and technology for fiber-optic communications and other applications (see, for example, “Agiltron unveils reconfigurable optical components, short wavelength isolators” and “Agiltron receives funding from NIST for optical switch development”). The reason for the raid has not yet been confirmed; however, the local CBS television affiliate quoted a source as saying the raid was related to “technology export.”According to other media reports (such as this one), the agents came from multiple agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The latter includes the Department of Homeland Security and enforces federal border control, customs, trade, and immigration laws. Investigating illegal technology export would be within its charter.Agiltron has been in business for more than 20 years. The company launched a major reorganization in 2001 that involved NZ Applied, JDSU, and Corning. More than 100 people work for the company, according to Agiltron’s website.
