Huawei supplies gear for Rostelecom optical distribution network
Huawei announced on Christmas that it has deployment an intelligent optical distribution network (iODN) for Rostelecom in Perm Krai, Russia. The iODN deployment, which aims to boost broadband services, is a first for the country, Huawei asserts. The iODN effort comes as part of Rostelecom’s plans to roll out a fiber to the home (FTTH) network. The new iODN will ease deployment efficiency and O&M of the fiber-optic network, Huawei says. For example, electronic and transparent resource management will protect Rostelecom’s FTTH infrastructure investment and reduce the cost of capacity expansion, according to the systems house. The network supports real-time monitoring of network construction and resilient adjustment of fiber links as well for faster service provisioning. Finally, network reliability and O&M will benefit from the iODM’s multi-level link-quality-assurance mechanism that supports real-time monitoring of link quality and fast fault diagnosis."The iODU network deployed by Huawei is great. It simplifies the O&M of fiber networks, helping us deliver high-quality services and lower O&M costs." said Korolev K.G., chief technology officer (CTO) of Rostelecom's Perm branch.

ElectroniCast: Free-space optics market on the upswing
The market for free-space optics (FSO) transmitter/receiver link devices for stationary non-military/aerospace applications reached $29.83 million in 2012, a 13% increase over the year 2011, according to ElectroniCast Consultants. The figures were released as the market research consultancy issued its new ElectroniCast Executive White Paper: Free Space Optics Global Market Forecast & Analysis (2012-2018).FSO is a line-of-sight technology that uses directed laser beams to transmit communications signals. Such systems are often positioned as an alternative to fiber-optic cables, particularly when laying such cables would be cost-prohibitive or where permitting presents an insurmountable obstacle.According to ElectroniCast, the Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) region represented the largest FSO market in 2012. However, the Americas are expected to usurp the top slot in 2013 – and to in turn be overthrown by the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region by the end of the forecast period. The ascendancy of the Americas market will be driven not only by continued upgrades and network facilitation in the United States and Canada, but also by accelerating economic growth in Latin America. Other market drivers in the Americas include growth in demand for communication links in mass transit, security systems, broadcast (TV), and telecommunications applications. However, the APAC region represents significant untapped potential for FSO system deployment. As the graph below shows, the Americas and APAC will put the squeeze on EMEA in terms of market share over the forecast period.

ZTE brings 100 Gbps to T-Mobile Austria fiber-optic backbone
ZTE Corp. (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ) revealed just before the holidays that it has supplied optical transport equipment for an upgrade to the backbone fiber-optic network of T-Mobile Austria, a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary. The upgrade brings 100-Gbps speeds to the network, up from 10 Gbps. The new systems rely on polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) modulation, coherent detection, and soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) to support the 100-Gbps data rates. The new equipment also offers a Wavelength Switched Optical Network (WSON)/GMPLS control plane and mesh networking support."The entire network was upgraded rapidly and ran stably,” said Xu Ming, ZTE Bearer Network general manager. “This demonstrates our capability to deploy 100G channels into an existing network.”
