Occam Networks to supply Mountain Rural Telephone’s broadband stimulus fiber project
NOVEMBER 2, 2010 -- Occam Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:OCNW) says that Mountain Rural Telephone Cooperative Corporation (MRTC) has chosen the system vendor’s BLC 6000 multiservice access platform (MSAP) to deliver high-speed broadband services across four counties in Eastern Kentucky. A combination of first-round Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) grants and loans, totaling $78.1 million, will fund the fiber-based FTTX network that, once completed, will reach over 15,000 businesses and residences. “Bringing an advanced, fiber network to this area of the state will be critical to ensuring economic development and an improved quality of life for residents,” said Allen Gillum, general manager, Mountain Rural Telephone. “After working closely together with Occam over the past three years, it is clear that the company has the same level of commitment to advancing rural development as we do. As a trusted partner, Occam’s vast experience with rural providers and responsiveness to our needs has been invaluable to our efforts, as well as our subscribers, and will continue to be critical throughout the fiber project.” Located in a mountainous area with little existing infrastructure, MRTC’s fiber network will serve Morgan, Elliott, Menifee and Wolfe Counties. The area is currently underserved and has broadband usage rates well below the rest of the state; however, when the planned 20-Mbps service becomes available, subscribers will be able to take full advantage of high-speed broadband. In addition to driving economic development for local businesses, the network build is also creating new employment opportunities within the community, many of which will continue past the completion of the network, Occam Networks asserts. “Throughout the broadband stimulus process, our service provider customers have been ambitious in developing large-scale network projects that improve both the economy and educational experience of their communities,” said Juan Vela, Director, Solutions Marketing and Strategy for Occam Networks. “MRTC is another standout example of this dedication to enabling social and economic growth within the region. With their planned fiber network, MRTC will advance the communications services of the area and provide the needed infrastructure to support new services as they arise for years to come.”

Etisalat, Huawei test 10G GPON
NOVEMBER 2, 2010 -- Huawei says it has successfully completed a 10G GPON full-service test with Etisalat on the carrier’s existing network in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Among other elements, the test demonstrated that 10G GPON technology can use Etisalat’s existing infrastructure without affecting the Optical Distribution Network (ODN). Esameel Al Hammadi, vice president/ASR (Access, Satellite, Radio) of Etisalat, said, "We are glad to explore the future potential of the innovative 10G GPON cutting-edge technology. Etisalat is now ready to provide the best services to the UAE community thereby supporting the vision of contributing to an e-City and e-Society within the Knowledge Age." Huawei says the 10G GPON FTTX technology, part of Huawei's All-IP convergence strategy, will help Etisalat to achieve full fiber coverage in the entire UAE region. During this test, Etisalat and Huawei verified the co-existance of GPON and 10G GPON over the current OLT platform, passing all of the required tests for successful co-existence of GPON and 10G GPON in an established ODN.

ortugal Telecom, Alcatel-Lucent to trial symmetrical 10G GPON
OCTOBER 28, 2010 -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has agreed with Portugal Telecom to conduct a symmetrical 10-Gbps GPON trial. Portugal Telecom has already launched the trial, which will evaluate the delivery of broadband at speeds that will allow end-users to remotely store the contents of a 200-GB hard drive in three minutes.“Portugal Telecom has been leading systematically in services and technology innovation, strongly investing in fiber-to-the-home -- using GPON technology -- to enable its customers to enjoy the highest bandwidths with the best quality of service,” says Alfredo Baptista, CTO of Portugal Telecom. “However, as services and bandwidth requirements keep on evolving rapidly, it is fundamental to continue to assess and evaluate the latest innovations -- such as the symmetrical 10G GPON technology that Alcatel-Lucent is providing for this trial.”“Portugal Telecom operates in a highly competitive market and has made very important investments in GPON already. As such, it is of crucial importance to Portugal Telecom and all service providers that a smooth and non-disruptive evolution path to the next-generation GPON technology is confirmed,” said Dave Geary, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireline activities. “Through this symmetrical 10G GPON trial -- a first in Europe and building on the GPON partnership that we have in place already -- Alcatel-Lucent will work with Portugal Telecom to demonstrate that 10G GPON technology indeed provides the smooth upgrade path service providers have been looking for, supporting their future service offerings in a sustained way.”Alcatel-Lucent has already trialed symmetrical 10G GPON, now the subject of XG-PON2 standards work, with Verizon (see “Verizon field trials XG-PON2 from Alcatel-Lucent”).
