Real-time oscilloscope analysis for 28/32-Gbps SerDes measurements
With the recent bandwidth breakthroughs in real-time oscilloscopes, measurements that previously could only be achieved using a sampling oscilloscope now can be handled by real-time oscilloscopes. Real-time oscilloscopes have not only broken the 60-GHz bandwidth barrier, they continue to improve in their measurement performance. While their noise and jitter levels still aren’t as low as those of a sampling oscilloscope with a precision time base, they have narrowed what was once a large signal integrity gap.As a result, oscilloscope users that previously would only use sampling oscilloscopes now should also consider a real-time oscilloscope. Real-time oscilloscopes offer the advantage of making measurements in a single acquisition and can capture milliseconds of data in that single acquisition, providing greater flexibility for debugging. The disadvantage tends to be cost (real-time oscilloscopes can be more than twice as expensive as sampling oscilloscopes) and the slightly worse signal integrity (i.e., higher noise and jitter). With these tradeoffs in mind, many designers feel that the advantages of a real-time oscilloscope are very appealing, especially when designing with 28- and 32-Gbps signals (Figure 1). Choosing a real-time oscilloscope can be the right decision for these applications; however, it is important to know how to properly use these scopes to maximize design margins in 28- and 32-Gbps designs.
Tilgin to supply home gateways to Jersey Telecom
Swedish FTTx equipment vendor Tilgin AB says that JT (Jersey) Ltd., formerly Jersey Telecom, has ordered a second round of home gateways for JT’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network.JT is in the midst of an extensive FTTH roll out (see “Jersey Telecom connects customers in FTTH trial”). JT first selected Tilgin to supply its HG 2300 Home Gateways, Tilgin Home Gateway software (HGA), and tGem device licenses earlier this year. The order value is in excess of 8 million SEK ($1.2 million).”With JT’s vision of building a world-class fiber to the home connectivity on Jersey, it was important for us to partner with a supplier that shares our vision,” explains Graeme Millar, CEO at JT. “We needed a partner with the right product portfolio today to be able to rapidly roll out an end-to-end solution for full triple play. We also needed a partner that will provide us with the right solutions for the future. Tilgin became our partner of choice. Their true gigabit-capable Home Gateway will act as our service delivery platform for the future, representing ‘the face of gigabit’ for JT in the Jersey homes.”“This is further confirmation of the abilities of Tilgin’s system solution for next-generation networks,” asserts Mats Victorin, CEO at Tilgin. “The pro-activeness of JT’s Gigabit Isles project is acknowledged in the industry and often used as a reference, so this is a prestigious partnership for us. A key to this success is our close collaboration with JT. We believe we have what it takes to help them to deliver a world class solution, both the portfolio and the vision, so this is perfect match.”
Tunisiana partners with Alcatel-Lucent for Tunisian wireline broadband access network
Wireless services provider Tunisiana has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to provide both hardware and services for the construction of a wireline broadband access network in Tunisia. The four-year agreement will see Alcatel-Lucent provide systems to support both GPON and VDSL2 architectures, as well as services that include designing, building, managing, and maintaining the network.Tunisiana expects to begin commercial services on the new broadband access network next year. The GPON and VDSL2 equipment deliveries will also include Alcatel-Lucent’s Motive Network Analyzer, which offers troubleshooting capabilities, as well as the Motive Home Device Manager, which enables remote management of broadband devices in customers’ homes.“Our mobile customers have come to expect a very high level of service quality and innovation,” said Hatem Mestiri, CTO of Tunisiana. “As we considered the challenges of building and managing a wireline network, we sought a solution that is as efficient as possible and keeps complexities to a minimum. Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise in providing network solutions as well in the management of those networks has been demonstrated over many decades and made them the best choice for Tunisiana, making sure we can meet the needs and expectations of both existing and new customers.”Faical Haffoudhi, country manager of Alcatel-Lucent Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania, added, “Our agreement with Tunisiana provides an exciting opportunity for Alcatel-Lucent to build a completely new wireline access network in a country that is experiencing a rapid adoption of new communications technologies. Tunisiana will be able to provide its customers with the highest service quality at all times, thanks to the unique combination of Alcatel-Lucent’s fixed access assets and our proven expertise in customer experience.”
