CBS Might Cut Off Dish
CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) will consider severing its ties to Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH) if the satellite TV giant insists on using AutoHop, an HD-DVR feature that automatically zaps the ads of prime-time programs on major broadcast stations. "If they want to eliminate our commercials, we will not be in business with them," CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said Wednesday at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch conference, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Dish and the broadcasters have filed dueling lawsuits over AutoHop. (See Dish Sticks It to the Broadcasters and Dish, Broadcasters Go to War Over Ad-Zapper .)
Google Fiber has added 19 new channels, including ESPN and other networks from the Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) stable, as it gets ready to launch its broadband and TV service bundle in the Kansas Cities. That fills some key programming gaps as Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) gets ready to disclose the final number of "fiberhoods" that have qualified for service. (See 89% of Google Fiberhoods Make the Cut .)The American Cable Association (ACA) has asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to identify in its next video competition report to Congress the number of small cable systems that have shut down in the past year and investigate the reasons, including rising programming costs and infrastructure fees. According to the ACA, the number of cable systems has declined by 26 percent (from 7,208 to 5,312) since 2005, with a higher percentage attached to systems with fewer than 10,000 subs. (See ACA: Little Cable Faces Some Big Issues.)Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) has launched Business Class Signature Support, a new 24/7 tech support and equipment protection program for the MSO's small business customers. Comcast has introduced the service, which starts at US$29.95 per month, in its Northeast division and expects to extend it to all markets by year's end.Hitron Technologies Inc. is adding PacketVideo Corp. 's Twonky Server to its Docsis 3.0 gateway, a move that will let users discover, manage and stream digital music and photos via PCs, smartphones, game consoles and tablets that are linked to the home network.
KC Gets Google Fiber for Real in October
Google Fiber published its approximate construction schedule Thursday afternoon, and the Hanover Heights section of Kansas City, Kan., is first in line and will start to receive broadband and subscription TV services from Google starting in October.Google Fiber also confirmed Thursday that 180 of the 202 "fiberhoods" (areas with 250 to 1,500 homes) reached their pre-registration goals to get service. (See 89% of Google Fiberhoods Make the Cut .)Hanover Heights led wire-to-wire during Google's six-week "fiber rally." Among other Kansas-side fiberhoods, Dubs Dread will get services in December, while another five areas are tabbed for the 2013 winter, more than a dozen set for the Spring of 2013. Even more are slated to come online next summer. On the Missouri side, Google Fiber construction will begin in Crown Center, Midtown, Sunset Hill and five other areas starting next Spring."It's important to note that our construction schedule isn't set in stone -- many factors, such as a harsh winter, may affect timing," Google Access GM Kevin Lo said on the Google Fiber blog, noting that the company will post any changes as they come about. But Google Fiber said anybody in a qualified fiberhood can go ahead and sign up for Google Fiber services now. Those include a 1Gbit/s service that runs $70 per month and a TV bundle that starts at $120 per month. Google's also offering a "free" broadband tier (5mbit/s down by 1Mbit/s upstream), if the customer ponies up the $300 construction fee. Google Fiber already has plans to conduct a similar rally in North and South Kansas City, Mo., as well as the Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Woods sections of Kansas City, Kan. However, it has not announced when that rally will start. (See Google Fiber Promises Phase II Rollout and How Long Will Google Keep the Fiber Flowing? )Google Fiber will be locking horns in the Kansas Cities with Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC), AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), SureWest Communications (Nasdaq: SURW) and, to a small degree, Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK).
Where's the Innovation?
With so much focus these days on service and application developments for the wireless world, there's a tendency sometimes to forget that there's plenty of innovation still happening in the fixed line world.Consider the introduction of 100Gbit/s services, for example, by the likes of XO Communications Inc. (OTC: XOHO), TeliaSonera AB (Nasdaq: TLSN), Verizon Business and Lightower Fiber Networks , to name but a few. (See XO's Not Done Yet With 100G, TeliaSonera IC Deploys NSN's 100G, Verizon Goes Global With Metro 100G and Lightower Picks Ciena for 100G.)They are all perfect candidates for consideration in the Best New Service or Application (Telecom) category of the 2012 Leading Lights Awards. And what about the welter of cloud services that have been launched during the past year? Those who have been developing new cloud offerings during the past year include NTT Communications Corp. (NYSE: NTT) outfit Dimension Data , Verizon's Terremark , Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), Cincinnati Bell Inc. (NYSE: CBB), XO Communications, Orange Business Services and many more. (See Dimension Data Announces OneCloud, Terremark, EMC Partner on Faster Cloud, Microsoft: A Company of Many Clouds, Cincinnati Bell Partners to Form Quicker Clouds, XO Keeps Cloud in the Family and Orange/SITA Cloud Prepares for Takeoff.)Then there's the Smart Networking offer that was launched earlier this year by Belgacom SA (Euronext: BELG). (See Belgacom Takes a Smart Turn.)
And we haven't even mentioned the developments and innovation that have taken place in Ethernet services, broadband access, unified communications, content delivery networks (CDNs) ...So many possibilities, but as with any awards process, it's all down to the quality of the entries, so don't delay any longer in submitting.
