AFL wins trademark lawsuit against Fiberoptic Hardware
The United States District Court for the District of Arizona has decreed Fiberoptic Hardware, LLC sold and falsely advertised unauthorized Fujikura fusion splicers in violation of the rights of Fujikura’s wholly owned subsidiary and U.S. distributor, AFL.AFL alleged that the Fujikura fusion splicers sold by Fiberoptic Hardware, which were intended for sale outside North America, were materially different from authentic Fujikura fusion splicers authorized for sale in the U.S. in that, among other things, their software was not properly licensed for use in the U.S. and had been modified to alter the language display, and that their sale was likely to confuse purchasers. AFL also contended that Fiberoptic Hardware's advertising of those splicers as "new" constituted false advertising.AFL filed the case in May 2011 (along with another, similar complaint against SurplusEQ.com; see "AFL files infringement lawsuits against Fiberoptic Hardware, SurplusEQ.com"), and the U.S. District Court issued a preliminary injunction in October 2011. The permanent injunction entered on May 31, 2012 prohibits Fiberoptic Hardware, along with its officers, employees, and others working with it, from "importing, exporting, distributing, circulating, selling, offering for sale, advertising, promoting or displaying any fusion splicer bearing any of the FUJIKURA Marks" if the splicers have been modified or are not authorized for sale in the U.S.Fiberoptic Hardware is owned by George Kyrias and Chris Wood is the company's sales manager.

EXFO adds iOLM technology to FTB Series OTDR modules
EXFO Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO) (TSX: EXF) has added its iOLM technology to more of its FTB series OTDR modules. The addition of iOLM to EXFO’s OTDRs will enable network operators to eliminate complex OTDR trace interpretation and human errors from their network testing cycles, the company asserts.Using an automated multipulse acquisition approach and advanced algorithms, the iOLM is an OTDR-based software application designed to provide detailed information on every element on the link, in a single-button operation. Powered by the company’s Link-Aware technology, iOLM self-manages the setting of all test parameters, requiring virtually no training for technicians of any skill level, EXFO asserts. Now offered on the FTB-7300 and FTB-7400 OTDRs, the iOLM application can be combined with various test functions and applications -- CD, PMD, WDM-Aware, EtherSAM, SONET/SDH, Ethernet, etc. -- inside EXFO's FTB Ecosystem platforms, including the FTB-200 Compact Platform. The iOLM technology was originally developed for the FTTH/PON fiber test environment (see “EXFO offers OTDR-based intelligent Optical Link Mapper for PON test”) and is also available on the handheld FTB-720 LAN/WAN Access OTDR and FTB-730 FTTx/PON MDU OTDR. However, since then EXFO has added it to test equipment aimed at a variety of network applications, including access, point-to-point, FTTA/DAS, metro, CWDM and long-haul networks. EXFO says iOLM-enabled test gear is being used in 60 countries and is currently undergoing numerous field trials with major operators. EXFO adds it intends to develop additional features for the iOLM to address the needs of more customers in multiple applications."With over 25 000 FTB-7000 series OTDRs in the field and a market share of more than 49%, EXFO is the household name in OTDRs. The iOLM adoption rate by our customers has been impressive as they quickly see the benefits of significantly stepping up their operational efficiency at all levels of their business," said Étienne Gagnon, Vice-President of EXFO's Test and Measurement Division and Corporate Marketing. "With a fully automated, self-setting approach and simple pass/fail results displayed in a straightforward link view, the iOLM application is a clear game-changer for network operators."

NTT to deploy Fujitsu 100-Gbps DWDM systems to connect Tokyo and Osaka
Fujitsu says it has collaborated with NTT Communications Corp. on a successful field test of coherent 100-Gbps DWDM transmission via a commercial fiber-optic cable between Tokyo and Osaka. The test clears the way for full network construction using the 100-Gbps DWDM systems. While Fujitsu has implemented coherent 100-Gbps DWDM systems outside of Japan (see, for example, “Mid-Atlantic Crossroads uses Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 for 100-Gbps network”), the field test opens the door for its first deployment in Japan. The test was conducted using dispersion-shifted fiber in the L-Band, which is often used in Japan for long-haul transmissions. The field test simulated real-world situations, such as fiber-optic cable changes in accordance with transmission-circuit route changes and adding/removing wavelengths. The results confirmed that a quality sufficient for commercial operation could be achieved at 8 Tbps (100 Gbps x 80 multiplexed wavelengths). The test also demonstrated that the system could compensate automatically when adding chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion to actual transmission circuits.Digital coherent transmission technology makes use of results achieved in two previous research projects, "R&D on High-speed Optical Transport System Technologies" and "R&D on High-speed Edge Node Technologies," which were supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
