NTS overcomes network hurdles in broadband stimulus deployment with ADTRAN GPON offering
NTS Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Xfone Inc. (AMEX:XFN), has selected ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN), a provider of networking systems, for its Broadband Stimulus Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) buildout--a three-year FTTH project scheduled to reach more than 25,000 subscribers by completion.ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 GPON product has helped resolve network hurdles that NTS faced in deploying high-definition IPTV and Over-the-Top (OTT) video services.“ADTRAN helped to save our business. Our incumbent’s GPON solution proved to be less than reliable and could not handle the simultaneous demands of HD IPTV, OTT video, and multi-megabit data services,” says Milton Schober, vice president, Data Services, NTS. “When we trialed the Total Access 5000 it worked perfectly, eliminating the reliability issues we had been experiencing and providing the scalability we need to meet the critical demands of this project.“The Total Access 5000 is not only allowing us to meet our current needs for GPON, but it will allow us to grow our services quickly and easily,” Schober adds. “In fact, we have already added mobile backhaul and plans are already in place to add Active Ethernet in the near future.”The ADTRAN Total Access 5000 boasts a multi-terabit backplane, a wide range of access and transport modules, and flexible, enabling service providers to launch new services more easily.“The network is changing at a rapid pace and service providers must not only be able to address the needs of today, but also keep up with the demands of their customers and remain competitive,” recognizes P. Steven Locke, vice president of sales, service providers, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “The Total Access 5000 provides a clear migration path, allowing service providers, like NTS, to reinvent their network continually to meet these changing demands.”

Halstad Telephone first to deploy EXA Powered Calix E7-20 for broadband stimulus FTTH project
Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX) says that three-time broadband stimulus award winner Halstad Telephone Co. (HTC) is the first to deploy the EXA Powered E7-20 multi-terabit Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP). The deployment is part of a new fiber to the home (FTTH) roll out that will deliver broadband services to previously underserved and unserved subscribers in five towns and the surrounding rural areas of Norman and Polk Counties in northwestern Minnesota.HTC plans to use the E7-20’s GPON and Active Ethernet FTTH capabilities, paired with Calix’s 700GE/GX family of optical network terminals (ONTs), in the deployment, which will support service speeds of 1 Gbps. "We believe that the E7-20 ESAP represents the future of fiber access, and we are excited to be the first company in the world to deploy it in our network," said Tom Maroney, chief executive officer at HTC. "In less than one hour the E7-20 was turned-up and placed in production delivering services over GPON and Active Ethernet to customers. Even in our rural market, we can foresee extraordinary bandwidth demand as video consumption continues to proliferate throughout our communities, and the E7-20 provides us with the capacity that we need to address this demand for decades to come."Calix says that HTC’s deployment of the E7-20 is the “the first of many scheduled over the next month.” The E7-20 ESAP is designed as a high-capacity, low-latency, all-fiber access concentrator with 2 Tbps capacity. It currently supports GPON, Active Ethernet, and point-to-point Gigabit Ethernet (GE) services on the subscriber side and multiple 10-Gigabit Ethernet transport services on the network side, the E7-20 has the capacity to symmetrically deliver 100 Gbps of non-blocking, fully redundant throughput to each of its 20 universal line card slots.HTC is deploying the E7-20 along with the E7-2 ESAP, the E5-120 Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN), and 700GE/GX family of ONTs with auto-detect capabilities across each of its three broadband stimulus projects, and using the Calix Management System (CMS) to provision and manage the delivery of advanced broadband services across GPON, Active Ethernet, point-to-point, and VDSL2 to its subscribers.

QCOL adopts Zhone Technologies FTTx network access system to deliver FTTH triple-play network
QCOL, a western Pennsylvania-based Internet services and triple-play provider, will deploy MXK from FTTx network access systems provider Zhone Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:ZHNE) as its primary Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) access platform for a new fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network it is building to deliver triple-play services to customers. Zhone’s MXK system will equip QCOL to deliver affordable, reliable, high-speed Internet access, VoIP, and video services to more than 2,000 subscribers across Fayette County, Penn.; Garrett County, Md., and Preston County, W.V., beginning August 2011. The system capabilities of Zhone’s MXK platform enable up to one gigabit (1GB) capacity in the home and the ability to support the extreme bandwidth demands generated by multiple high-definition television (HDTV) screens, high-definition digital video recorder (HD-DVR) content, and video streaming within the home. Its scalability and flexibility help future-proof the network for more advanced service rollout, while reducing recurring operating expenses (OPEX) and any adverse customer impact from rollout of these next-generation services, says a company representative. “The residential and business customers we serve are demanding increasing amounts of bandwidth. We sought a solution to address not only current but future bandwidth requirements,” explains Brian Frazee and Doug Friend, owners of QCOL. “We selected Zhone for the impressive density offered by 8-port GPON cards, along with the MXK’s superior scale, effective network management capabilities, and system flexibility to support multiples services in the same chassis. We were extremely intrigued by the cost savings anticipated for us and our customers.” With QCOL delivering radio-frequency (RF) video over fiber and the MXK’s ability to support the same via either Passive Optical Network (PON) or point-to-point Active Ethernet, the MXK was a fit for this project. QCOL is also deploying Zhone’s zNID Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) for the end points.
