RSoft targets 100G coherent with OptSim 5.2 design software
RSoft Design Group has released Optical Communications Design Suite version 5.2, which includes OptSim and the multimode-focused ModeSYS. The upgraded photonics design automation software now includes the ability to design and simulate systems for 100 Gbps, including the use of polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) with coherent detection.Support for such designs as polarization induced all-optical switching systems, bi-directional Ethernet in the First Mile system, interferometry based systems, multimode systems with mode-coupling effects, and plastic optical fiber systems also is new to the software suite. For 100-Gbps coherent applications, the suite offers a numberof models, including:Constant-Modulus algorithm.Viterbi-Viterbi phase estimation.electronic and optical dispersion compensation.DSP-based polarization recovery.Kahunen-Loeve BER estimation.direction error-counting beyond a million bits.It also features dynamic phase tracking capability through LMS algorithm-based training sequence and decision-drive equalization to account for dynamic phenomena such as laser phase noise. Users also can incorporate various mismatch effects in the coherent reception such as the frequency and phase mismatch of the receiver local oscillator.ModeSYS, meanwhile, now can account for mode coupling effects and offers improved support for large-core fiber with large modal volumes, such as plastic optical fiber.
DALSA delivers MEMS for JDSU's wavelength-selective switches
NOVEMBER 18, 2010 -- MEMS foundry DALSA Semiconductor, a division of DALSA Corp. (TSX:DSA), says it has qualified a new generation of optical MEMS products for JDSU. DALSA will supply the wavelength-selective switches (WSSs) for JDSU’s reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) offerings."We are happy to report that after an intense qualification period, DALSA and JDSU are moving to expand production of this latest generation of MEMS based products for the optical communication market. We anticipate a long, successful and strategic business relationship," commented Claude Jean, executive vice president and general manager of DALSA Semiconductor.Engineering teams from both companies collaborated closely, DALSA says, to build on what DALSA described as “the companies' existing long-term relationship.”"DALSA is a key vendor for JDSU across our market leading WSS portfolio" said Craig Cocchi, vice president of operations for JDSU. "Their high-performing MEMS technology is helping us to rapidly ramp throughput for our leading range of ROADM products."
Alcatel-Lucent touts Bell Labs OFDM optical transmission research
OCTOBER 3, 2010 -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:ALU) says its research arm, Bell Labs, has demonstrated a 606-Gbps line rate using optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The work was described in a paper delivered last month during the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Turin, Italy. The 606-Gbps OFDM transmission ran over a distance of 1,600 km of fiber. The system uses OFDM with PDM 32-QAM subcarriers and detects the entire 606-Gbps multiplex in a single coherent detection step, Alcatel-Lucent asserts. This new optical transmission record is very impressive and state-of-the-art,” said Gee Rittenhouse, head of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Research “But more meaningful is that these technologies represent the leading edge of a transformation in communications networks that will enable us to keep up with future demand.”
