JDSU targets 2012 for ‘Self Aware Networks’ product suite
JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) has announced at ECOC its intension to offer a suite of five optical communications products in the second half of 2012 targeted at what it calls “Self Aware Networks.” The suite will include a wavelength-selective switch (WSS) two-pack, dual multicast switch, optical channel monitor, hybrid Raman/Erbium amplifier, and an EDFA array.Self Aware Networks require colorless, directionless, contentionless, and flexible spectrum capabilities, according to JDSU. Based on the suite of products, these functions would be enabled via reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) and attendant amplification technology."Self Aware Networks require a new architecture and a new set of high-performance, compact, and cost-effective components," said Brandon Collings, optical communications CTO for the CCOP segment at JDSU. "We're developing a comprehensive portfolio of products that will enable these new architectures based on several years of collaboration with customers to understand the requirements of next generation networks."Details of the Self Aware Network product suite include:A Twin WSS, which integrates two independent 1x20 WSSs into a compact form factor to support “route and select” architectures. It will be designed to efficiently support rapid wavelength routing, improve signal isolation, and reduce optical power loss at network switching nodes. It will also provide full flexible spectrum channel allocation and scaling for channel multiplexing and demultiplexing with colorless, directionless, and contentionless capabilities, according to JDSU.The Dual Multi-Cast Switch features an integrated pair of new devices that implement colorless, directionless, and contentionless wavelength routing in a single package. It will support up to 8 degrees of optical switching and 16 transceiver ports.The optical channel monitor will have multiple inputs and a scanning filter to support flexible spectrum and dynamically reconfigured networks.The hybrid Raman/Erbium amplifier will add less noise into the network than conventional EDFAs, JDSU asserts.The EDFA array will integrate several EDFAs into a compact form factor, JDSU says.
RED-C amplifiers target next-generation ROADM networks
RED-C Optical Networks Ltd. has unveiled a variety of high-density EDFA packages for integration in ROADM line cards. It also has announced a four-pump hybrid Raman-EDFA module that it says enables dynamic path reconfiguration. The new high-density packages may contain two, four, or eight EDFAs for integration on a ROADM line card. EDFA within a given module can support full WDM operation, including transient suppression, and can be controlled separately from the other EDFAs in the module, RED-C says. Meanwhile, for applications where WDM channels may have to cover extended distances without regeneration, RED-C’s new hybrid Raman-EDFA comprises three Raman pumps and one EDFA pump to provide the necessary OSNR performance. The new hybrid amplifier offers a noise figure of 0 dB, which contrasts to the approximate 6 dB encountered with a conventional EDFA, RED-C asserts. This feature enables up to a four-fold increase in the optical path length between regenerators, according to the company. As with the RED-C’s other hybrid Raman-EDFAs, the new module integrates a distributed Raman pre-amplifier and a variable gain EDFA. The integrated control circuitry operates in advanced automatic gain control (AGC) mode so that the combined Raman and EDFA gain is accurately measured and controlled, including fast transient suppression, according to RED-C. The module operation and interface are similar to those of a traditional variable gain EDFAs, and therefore require no special system adaptations, the company addes. The module is classified as Class 1M with respect to laser safety.
Optical amplifier offers record low noise, says Chalmers researchers
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden say they have demonstrated an extremely low noise optical amplifier that can extend signal reach by 4X. The phase-sensitive fiber-optic parametric amplifier (PSA) offers a noise figure of 1.1 dB, 3X less than that of conventional EDFAs. If the amplifier can be commercialized – and Chalmers described the technology behind the PSA as “practical” – it could significantly improve the performance of optical communications networks by lessening the amount of interference signals would encounter.“This is the ultimate optical amplifier,” asserts Professor Peter Andrekson, who led the research group who developed the low-noise amplifier. “It enables connecting cities, countries, and continents more efficiently by placing the amplification hubs at much greater intervals. The signal can also be modulated more effectively. In addition, the amplifier is compatible with any modulation format, with traditional laser transmitters, and can be very broadband, making it compatible with many lasers at different wavelengths.”An article published in Nature Photonics describes a demonstration of the technology. The non-degenerate PSA link consisted of a phase-insensitive parametric copier followed by a phase-sensitive amplifier that provided broadband amplification, signal modulation-format independence, and nearly 6-dB link noise-figure improvement over conventional links that leverage EDFAs, according to the article description. The group suggests the PSA’s noise level has a theoretical minimum of 0 dB.Chalmers researchers say their next step is to focus on applications. In addition to wireline optical communications, the amplifier could have ramifications for free-space communications, laser radar, spectroscopy, and measurement.The research was funded by the European Union as part of project PHASORS and by the Swedish Research Council (VR). Participating partners in the EU project include University of Southampton, University College Cork, University of Athens, Eblana, OFS, OneFive Photonics, and EXFO Sweden AB.
