Fujitsu develops amplifier to enable PON-based optical aggregation networks
Fujitsu Ltd. and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. say they have developed optical amplifier technology for PONs that would quadruple the number of splits and double reach. The development would enable the use of PON technology for optical aggregation applications. While PONs are now a commonly accepted approach to deliver services to consumers and businesses, the fact that each PON will support only 32 end-user connections at a distance of approximately 20 km has prevented their consideration for aggregation requirements, Fujitsu says. Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories say their new amplifier technology can overcome these limitations, particularly in the upstream. The new burst-mode optical amplifier technology uses a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), an integrated SOA-array module fabrication technology, and an SOA chip fabrication technology that enables uncooled operation. The resulting PON amplifier will quadruple the split ratio in a PON and double the transmission distance between the central office equipment and the terminal equipment, the Fujitsu organizations assert. The burst-mode amplifier would be placed in a remote node between the optical line terminal (OLT) in the central office and the optical network termination (ONT) at the customer’s site. The amplifier would remain in an “off” state until it detects an incoming upstream signal. The fact that the amplifier would not always be on reduces optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) to the point where traffic from 128 ONTs could be amplified with the same OSNR as 32.The manufacturing technology enables four SOAs to be integrated into a single module and uses a coupling scheme that couples four SOAs with four singlemode fibers. Meanwhile, the SOA chip fabrication process sees an aluminum composite material deployed in the active layer of the SOA. This process enables high gain, even at high temperatures, the Fujitsu units assert. The ability to operate without cooling reduces module volume to one-fifth, with one-sixth the power compared with a conventional cooled SOA module, they continue. The module operates at temperatures up to 85°C, which means it can be installed outdoors.Research results derived by the Commissioned Research of National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) were applied to portion of the amplifier work, the Fujitsu groups acknowledge. The team presented its research in a paper last month at ECOC in Geneva.

Capella offers CR-EX 1x20 WSS
Capella Intelligent Subsystems added its name to the list of 1x20 wavelength-selective switch (WSS) suppliers this week with the unveiling of the CR-EX. The 1x20 WSS offers an integrated monitoring capability, wide passbands, high extinction ratio, and low cross talk and insertion loss for all 21 ports, Capella asserts. The CR-EX fits in the same footprint as the CR50 and CR100 and is designed to support either fixed attenuation or constant power mode. Like the CR50 and CR100, the 1x20 module’s optional integrated optical channel power monitor (OCPM) eliminates the need for standalone optical monitoring, which reduces cost and footprint within the DWDM chassis, Capella points out. The integrated OCPM leverages the company’s patented Wavelength Connectivity Confirmation capability.Pat Day, Capella’s vice president of engineering and product development asserted, “Our CR-EX offers best in class optical performance, the lowest profile, and the lowest power consumption on the market today. The CR-EX, with its integrated optical channel power monitor, and 1x20 (drop) or 20x1 (add) functionality or combined add/drop in a single module, is the complete WSS solution for route and select ROADM architectures.” Capella says the CRx family has passed required reliability and quality standards and is generally available and shipping in volume to multiple customers.

Finisar offers Flexgrid gridless 1x20 wavelength selective switch
Finisar Corp. (NASDAQ: FNSR) has unveiled a 1x20 wavelength-selective switch (WSS) which leverages the company’s Flexgrid technology to provide “gridless” flexibility. The company sees the new 1x20 WSS with Flexgrid as an enabler of high-port-count, colorless, directionless, and contentionless (CDC) ROADMs.The 1x20 WSS increases nodal capacity while offering high performance across express ports, Finsar says. The WSS therefore minimizes end-to-end system penalties and maximizes the number of ports available for CDC add/drop modules. The company’s filter bandwidth technology is designed to enable current and future high-speed signals to travel longer distances and through more ROADM nodes, Finsar adds. Meanwhile, the Flexgrid technology offers adjustable channel spacing from 50 to 200 GHz in  increments of 12.5 GHz. This will enable carriers to use their existing architectures to carry “all future transmission formats” up to 1 Tbps at whatever spectrum bandwidth required, Finisar asserts. "The introduction of Finisar's 1x20 WSS with Flexgrid results from Finisar's ongoing commitment to provide the solutions our customers need to address the next generation of ROADM and wavelength cross-connects in optical networks," said Eitan Gertel, Finisar’s CEO. "These important enhancements to our WSS product portfolio are fully compatible with Finisar's Flexgrid capabilities introduced earlier this year and will give network designers the tools to provide cost-effective flexible network architectures."
