Cadence Offers Standards-Based Design IP and VIP for Automotive Ethernet Controllers
The standards-based Design IP and VIP support the latest Automotive Ethernet extensions as defined by the OPEN Alliance Special Interest Group (SIG). Together, both IP help speed today’s newest automotive requirements to market, including improvements to in-vehicle safety, comfort, and infotainment as well as reductions in network complexity and cabling costs. Implementation of these new capabilities is made faster and easier by the Cadence® Media Access Controller (MAC) Design IP and VIP for Ethernet-based automotive connectivity. The automotive industry is trending towards Ethernet for in-vehicle networking based on IEEE standards driven by the OPEN Alliance SIG to develop a simpler and more powerful Automotive Electrical/Electronic Architecture. Ethernet for in-vehicle networking provides a cost effective cabling solution for the Automotive Industry with low-weight, unshielded twisted pair cable.“Car manufacturers are starting to deploy Automotive Ethernet over unshielded twisted pair cabling inside the vehicles. Therefore it is important for the industry that companies like Cadence provide Design and Verification IP that will enable the ecosystem to develop Ethernet-based products for in-vehicle communication,” said Ian Riches, Director Global Automotive Practice, at Strategy Analytics. The Cadence MAC Design IP speeds development of automotive Ethernet-based integrated circuits. In addition, Cadence Ethernet VIP customers can automate complex conformance tests of the Automotive Ethernet protocol and take advantage of advanced verification methodologies. Cadence VIP significantly shortens the overall testbench development time resulting in increased verification productivity.“The introduction of Ethernet for in-vehicle networking delivers revolutionary benefits to automotive connectivity relative to the costly, low performance and proprietary technology previously used,” said Martin Lund, Senior Vice President, SOC Realization Group, Cadence. “With our new IP and VIP offering, customers can more easily implement the latest automotive requirements and create advanced Ethernet-based products for in-vehicle communication.”Cadence is a market leader in silicon-proven Ethernet IP solutions, with more than 12 years of expertise in delivering, and supporting high-quality Ethernet IP. Cadence Ethernet IP is UNH-tested and silicon-proven in many high-volume commercial products. Leveraging membership and participation in the OPEN Alliance SIG and IEEE 802.3 and 802.1 standards community, Cadence continues to upgrade its IP solution to give customers the highest confidence in their Ethernet solutions.

Phybridge’s UniPhyer
To handle the high cost of infrastructure investment that comes with IP networking over data cable, the go-to vendor, for some time, has been Phybridge, a Canadian-based IP phone deployment infrastructure provider, and partner with several UC platform vendors.UniPhyer, Phybridge’s VoIP enabler, allows businesses to run IP telephony without performing expensive LAN upgrades. Pre-existing IP PBX systems by providers such as Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, ShoreTel, Siemens, and the like are converted by Phybridge’s UniPhyer into a relatively simple plug-and-play installation that comes with a much lower cost than traditional IP deployment.Phybridge has been actively servicing the requirements of enterprise VoIP communications. But that can change soon because ADTRAN and Mitel recently released new products to accommodate VoIP and even Ethernet over voice-grade cabling.

Adtran’s ActivReach
Relying on the use of multiple cable pairs to create Ethernet, Adtran’s ActivReach technology is touted by the company to enable businesses to add up to 100Mbps of data to existing voice-grade wiring.Made available in October, Adtran’s NetVanta 1535P Gigabit Ethernet switch consists of 24 copper ports and 4 fiber ports intended for uplinks and stacking. A statement from ADTRAN detailed that every “copper port can be configured for speeds of 10/100 Mbps in ActivReach mode at distances up to 365 meters (1,200 ft.) or standard IEEE 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet at distances up to 100 meters (328 ft.).” This, in turn, makes incremental cabling infrastructure upgrades possible while providing power over Ethernet (PoE) within voice-grade lines. The switch port running on ActivReach mode can also be reconfigured to allow Gigabit networking speeds once new cabling is set in place. ADTRAN listed a price of $4,695 for the NetVanta 1535P.
