Maxim intros SFP+ optical module controller for optical video
The DS1876 controls two laser drivers to enable low-cost implementation of modules supporting SDI digital video and other optical video applications. The chip gives customers all necessary control and monitoring functionality in a single device, thus saving the expense of two microcontrollers as well as complex software development, Maxim says.Automatic power control (APC) and laser modulation are controlled through four temperature-driven look-up tables (LUTs) featuring 10-bit delta-sigma DAC outputs with an independent 72-entry LUT for each output. The DS1876 monitors six analog channels: temperature, Vcc, and transmit power and bias current for each of the two laser drivers. It also provides an I2C-compliant interface to the host system. The DS1876 is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +95 degrees Celsius temperature range, says Maxim, and is available in a 5x5-mm 28-pin TQFN package. Pricing begins at $1.75 (1000-up, FOB USA).

Analog Devices launches 4x Fibre Channel SFP chipset
According to market research firm IDC (Framingham, MA), Fibre Channel switch port shipments are expected to grow annually by an average of 40% through 2008. Optical transceivers that connect to Fibre Channel switches at 4.25 Gbits/sec will be key components in this market, enabling developers of SAN equipment to double the existing data rate, while remaining compatible with older modules running at 1- and 2-Gbit/sec data rates."Analog Devices' 4x Fibre Channel transceiver chipset and reference design offers optical transceiver designers a turnkey solution with best-in-class performance for power, sensitivity, and eye quality," reports Peter Real, product line director for Analog Devices' High-Speed Networking Group."By making both the SFP Fibre Channel chipset and reference design available at the same time, Analog Devices is enabling optical transceiver manufacturers to reduce the time it takes to bring their SAN products to market."The high-performance 1x/2x/4x SFP chipset meets the requirements of the Fibre Channel Multi-source Agreement (MSA) specifications and is optimized for SFF-8472 digital diagnostics. The existence of an MSA standardizes modules, offering the market significant time and cost savings over custom modules. The SFP chipset includes four Analog Devices' products designed to work seamlessly together:On the receive chain, the ADN2882, a 4.25-Gbit/sec transimpedance amplifier (TIZ), has a sensitivity of -22 dBm, while dissipating only 75 mW of power.
The ADN2892, a 4.25-Gbit/sec limiting amplifier, features selectable bandwidth for operation at the 1x and 2x Fibre Channel rates (1.063 Gbits/sec and 2.125 Gbits/sec) and the Gigabit Ethernet rate (1.25 Gbits/sec) ensuring backwards compatibility to 1x and 2x Fibre Channel modules, while dissipating 160 mW of power. On the transmit side, Analog Devices offers a choice of laser diode drivers. The ADN2871 single-loop LDD supports vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) DFB and FP lasers and provides over 45% eye margin to the 4x Fibre Channel mask. The ADN2870 dual-loop laser diode driver automatically controls DFB and FP lasers over temperature and compensates for laser aging, thus reducing or eliminating the need for expensive temperature calibration.Use of Analog Device's ADuC7020 precision microcontroller allows the module function to be set in software or control more complicated and higher performance modules. On a single chip, the microcontroller integrates a 32-bit RISC core with precision data conversion technology that supports up to 16 channels of fast, 12-bit analog-to-digital conversion and up to four 12-bit digital-to-analog converters. The 1x/2x/4x multi-rate reference design, meanwhile, includes an SFP board and the optics to enable immediate evaluation, speed time to market, and reduce development costs. In addition, the reference design includes a host board, I2C support, Gerber files, object and source code for the microcontroller, a graphical user interface, and technical documentation. The SFP reference design is available now. The ADN2882 TIA, ADN2892 limiting amplifier and ADN2870 dual-loop laser driver are available in production quantities. Samples of the ADN2882 TIA are available in either die form or in a receive optical sub-assembly (ROSA). The ADN2871 single-loop laser driver will sample in February of 2005. The ADuC7020 precision microcontroller is sampling now and will be available in production quantities in July 2005. The chipset will sell in high volume for $3.90.

SFP chipset supports 4-Gbit/sec Fibre Channel
The two-chip set reduces module chip count when compared with current market offerings and provides enhanced SFP/SFF-8472 compliant digital diagnostic capabilities that are critical for functionality and design flexibility. The chipset includes the VSC7964, a monolithic laser driver and post amplifier, and the VSC7977, a bandwidth-selectable transimpedance amplifier. The VSC7964 and VSC7977 chipset architecture and pin placement has been optimized to reduce the bill of material cost and to simplify the assembly process to the point where all components, both active and passive, can fit on a single side of a four-layer printed circuit board. This chipset also requires 50% less external passive components than competitive solutions. The VSC7964 is the first device to integrate the VCSEL laser driver and post amplifier into a single integrated circuit, says Vitesse. The driver features automatic power control loop, adjustable negative peaking control, six integrated DACs, and a temperature sensor -- all of which reduce the need for external components. With measured rise and fall times on both the transmitter and receiver of less than 40 psec, the VSC7964 exhibits 40% margin to the 4G Fibre Channel eye mask and greater than 50% margin to the 1G/2G eye mask. The sensitivity of the post amplifier is 3 mV differential, with a crosstalk penalty of less than 0.1 dB, corresponding to an optical sensitivity of -21 dBm at 4 Gbits/sec.The VSC7977 optical sensitivity at the 4-Gbit/sec data rate adds over 6 dB of margin to the standard. The device also features 6 kOhms of transimpedance gain and incorporates a linear photo current monitor, on chip photodiode filter and extended temperature range operation of -40 to +105 degrees C.The VSC7964 and VSC7977 is the only available chipset to offer bandwidth adjustment to meet the 4 Gbits/sec INCITS/T11 Fibre Channel standards, the company asserts. Through the rate select control input on the VSC7964, the bandwidth of both the post amplifier and TIA functions can be adjusted to one of four settings. This bandwidth selection capability provides module manufacturers with up to 2.5 dBm of additional receiver sensitivity at 1G data rates. The VSC7964 has been designed to seamlessly operate with a standard microcontroller to provide the required SFP/SFF-8472 digital diagnostic capabilities. By communicating digitally through the use of the integrated DACs and a serial peripheral interface (SPI), the designer has complete access to the VSC7964 registers, such as the laser bias, modulation and peaking currents, and the LOS threshold settings, thus maximizing implementation flexibility and increasing the testability. This enhanced functionality can be used to reduce the calibration and test time, while enabling module manufacturers to differentiate their products by offering advanced diagnostic and management features not available when using a digital diagnostics chip-based solution.Although the 8G Fibre Channel standard will not be completed until late 2005 or early 2006, indications are that the SFP form factor will be the module of choice. The power requirement and cost target will be similar to the 4G solution. Vitesse has already measured the VSC7964 performance at 8.5 Gbits/sec. Link performance at 850 nm was verified over 180 m of 50 micron multimode fiber that was compliant to the FC-PI-2 standard. This is a major step in confirming feasibility for the SFP form factor to support higher data rates. The VSC7964 Laser Driver/Post Amplifier is sampling now and is available in a 40-pin, 6x6-mm QFP-N package. Samples of the VSC7977 will be available in September 2004 and will be sold in die form or as a complete optical receiver in a standard five-pin TO-46 package with a short wave PIN detector. The VSC7964YK and VSC7977-W laser driver, post amplifier, and TIA chipset is priced at $3.78 in production quantities.
