U.S. Patents Awarded to Inventors in Maryland (Feb. 16)
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 16 -- Infinera, Sunnyvale, Calif., has been assigned a patent (8,116,602) developed by Brent E. Little, Columbia, Md., and Saitak Chu, Columbia, Md., for a "high efficiency optical mode transformer for matching a single mode fiber to a high index contrast planar waveguide."The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "The present invention includes a device and a method for fabricating a device that is an optical power mode transformer that accepts light in a mode transformation direction where the transformer is attached to or embedded in a semiconductor microchip and includes a first single or multimode optical input (SM) waveguide including a first core surrounded by a cladding, and, a second high contrast index grade (HC) waveguide including a second core having a tapered region and surrounded by said cladding, a portion of the tapered region of the core being embedded within the first optical input waveguide region with an embedded length sufficient for efficient light transfer from the first input waveguide to the said second waveguide wherein the embedded portion of the tapered region is fully surrounded by the first input waveguide along an axial and radial cross-section of the second waveguide in the mode transformation direction. In this manner, it is possible that the long (SM) waveguide eventually actually acts as a cladding for the (HC) waveguide."

EMCORE Corporation hits year-high 1st time in three months
EMCORE Corporation (EMCORE) is a provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and terrestrial solar power markets. The Company has two reporting segments: Fiber Optics and Photovoltaics. Fiber Optics segment offers optical components, subsystems, and systems that enable the transmission of video, voice, and data over high-capacity fiber optic cables for high-speed data and telecommunications, cable television (CATV) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks. Photovoltaics segment provides solar products for satellite and terrestrial applications. On February 22, 2008, EMCORE acquired telecom-related assets of Intel Corporation's Optical Platform Division (OPD). On April 20, 2008, EMCORE acquired the enterprise and storage-related assets of Intel Corporation's OPD business, as well as Intel's Connects Cables business. In January 2009, the Company completed the sale of WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corporation.

Colt deploys ADVA FSP 3000 ROADM in Dublin
European network services provider Colt has chosen the FSP 3000 from ADVA Optical Networking for a new ROADM-based fioer-optic network in Dublin, Ireland. The 11-node, ring-based network will span 100 km.The multi-degree ROADMs will enable Colt to use a combination of hardware pre-provisioning and point-and-click configuration software to improve service delivery to its enterprise and carrier customers. Colt will be able to offer improved lead times for high bandwidth services for data centers, financial institutions, and business campus locations around Dublin, ADVA asserts.“The multi-degree ROADM architecture provides us with a flexible provisioning option, allowing us to easily provide access at nodes as demand grows with point-and-click technology, giving us a competitive advantage to attract customers through reduced lead times,” said Ken Sherry, operations director for Colt in Ireland. “This will save valuable time and resources in network planning and service provisioning, making us more efficient and agile than ever before.”“Scalability is a key component in today’s networks as increasing amounts of data are being transported,” commented Marcello Forti, vice president, U.K. & Ireland Sales, ADVA Optical Networking. “Service providers like Colt need the ability to quickly provision services and respond to customers. Fast provisioning through the FSP Service Manager saves time and resources, giving Colt an advantage in a competitive environment. Business customers benefit greatly by having bandwidth when and where they need it. That is what modern networking is all about.”
