Calix offers Flow Analyzer 2.0, update of traffic usage tool
Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says it has released a new version of Flow Analyzer, the first application in its Compass suite of network and service management and analysis software applications. The cloud-based Flow Analyzer 2.0 is designed to offer communications service providers a subscriber-focused view into the data usage on their networks through a standards-based interface that seamlessly interoperates with common service provider billing systems.Flow Analyzer 2.0 enables service providers to see subscriber network use at an application level, without looking into packets or specific content, Calix says. This visibility enables service providers to gain insights into subscriber usage patterns and create new revenue-generating services based on those patterns."Here in rural North Dakota, we have provided all of our customers with a state-of-the-art, fiber-to-the- premises (FTTP) network," said Jeff T. Wilson, general manager at Dickey Rural Networks in Ellendale, ND. "Now that we have completed our fiber network build, it is crucial for our business to leverage the power of fiber to deliver unique services to our customers. With the Calix Flow Analyzer and the visibility it provides into our network, we will be able to tailor our service packages to provide the right services to the right customers -- improving their service experience while maintaining their privacy and potentially innovating and expanding our service offerings.""Service provider business models are undergoing a significant transformation as these companies look to provide more differentiated services for their subscribers and gain new revenues," added Miguel Alonso, Calix vice president of software products. "With the cloud-based model of Flow Analyzer 2.0, service providers can take advantage of this subscriber-focused data with minimal investment. Since launching Compass one year ago, we have already worked with over 60 customers in North America and the Caribbean to utilize this powerful tool to provide a better subscriber experience and accelerate their business model transformation."

Infonetics: OTN transport and switching equipment a $10.6 billion market by 2015
Carriers are installing Optical Transport Network (OTN) transport equipment first, but OTN switch deployment should catch up fast, says Infonetics Research. Combined, the two segments will create a $10.6 billion market by 2015 according to OTN Hardware Market Outlook, which the market research firm asserts is the first report to track, segment, and assess vendor market share for both OTN transport equipment and OTN switching equipment.Infonetics says that 92% of OTN spending went to transport equipment in 2011. However, the OTN switching segment is growing much faster than OTN transport, a phenomenon that will continue as carriers roll out 40-Gbps and 100-Gbps coherent technology, according to the report."Each segment is in a different stage of adoption and has a wildly different growth rate,” confirms Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst for optical at Infonetics Research. “Case in point: OTN switching revenue jumped 132% in 2010 over 2009, while OTN transport revenue grew 9%. Both segments are growing at a pace that far outstrips the 3.7% CAGR of the overall optical market."For example, OTN switching and transport system sales combined to make up 45% of global optical equipment spending (including WDM and SDH/SONET) in the first half of 2011. That share should increase to 70% of the total by 2015, the report asserts.Huawei currently rules both the OTN transport and switching markets, thanks in part to the fact that China's telecom carriers were the first to embrace all-OTN networks, including the largest installations of OTN switching.Infonetics' OTN hardware report provides regional and global market size, forecasts, vendor market share, and analysis for OTN transport hardware and OTN switching hardware, including OTN port revenue forecasts by port type and speed. The report includes OTN hardware market drivers, regional OTN trends, OTN vendor market share notes, OTN service provider survey data, and comparison's to the overall optical network hardware market.

Ethernet Alliance updates ‘The End Users Speak!’ Technology Exploration Forum details
The Ethernet Alliance has released the agenda for its February 16 Technology Exploration Forum (TEF). Entitled, “TEF 2012 - The End Users Speak!” the event will feature 14 speakers and will focus on the future needs of Ethernet as information technology evolves over the next decade. The TEF will be held at Techmart in Santa Clara, CA, and will run from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.The TEFs are an ongoing series of forums the Ethernet Alliance sponsors to enable discussion and consensus building on various Ethernet-related topics. The February 16 TEF will acknowledge that a great deal of Ethernet technology has reached the field over the last 10years. The full-day is designed to provide a forum for end user representatives to offer their opinions about that technology and what they would like to see in the future. The agenda combines panel discussions with keynote presentations:The first panel will discuss “Ethernet in Future Data Centers.” Speakers will include Ramanujam Rao of Nationwide Insurance, Fred Hartley of Chevron, and Matt Estes of the Open Data Center Alliance. The second panel will focus on “Ethernet and the Heart of the Internet.” The panel will include Martin Pels of Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), Shamim Akhtar of Comcast, and Jay Behrens of Frontier Communications.Keynoters will include Jeremy Stinson of myYearbook and Parantap Lahiri of Microsoft. They will share their views on the future of Ethernet and its ability to address the demands of their respective networks. The last panel will address “The Role of Power in Networks,” with Mike Bennett of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL), Bruce Nordman of LBNL, Una Song of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Bob Felderman of Google. Two talks provide a capstone to the event. Todd Roth of Harris will discuss Ethernet’s role in entertainment and broadcast. Paul Nikolich, of YAS Broadband Ventures and chair of IEEE 802 LAN MAN Sponsor Committee, will present his views on the IEEE and Ethernet’s Future.“This is going to be an exciting and informative event,” said John D’Ambrosia, chair, Ethernet Alliance board of directors. “TEF 2012 - The End Users Speak! is designed to allow the end user community to share their Ethernet experiences with the Ethernet developer community. We are looking forward to lively discussions about Ethernet network architectures and application requirements to help determine what end-users need from Ethernet for their networks.”
