Google begins connecting homes to Kansas City FTTH network
Google says it is ready to begin connecting customers in the Kansas City, KS, “fiberhoods” that met its demand criteria (see “Google Fiber open for business”).The first fiberhood on the FTTH list is Hanover Heights. Dubs Dread will follow later this month, according to the schedule on the Google Fiber website. These two areas appear to be the only fiberhoods that will see installations this year. An additional five should see deployments begin in the first quarter – or, as the Google schedule puts it, “winter” – of 2013.Google expects to have deployments underway by next fall in all 69 of the Kansas City, KS, fiberhoods currently scheduled to receive service. Deployments in Kansas City, MO, are expected to begin next spring, with Crown Heights at the top of the deployment roster. The company is emphasizing customer service. A post on the Google Fiber Blog notes that the installers will clean up after themselves – “each installer carries a vacuum cleaner,” the blog assures potential customers. The company also has produced a video to give customers an idea of what an installation will entail.Google also plans to launch services in five additional area towns: Kansas City North and Kansas City South in Missouri, as well as Westwood, Westwood Hills, and Mission Woods in Kansas.

Net Insight Nimbra VA 210 offers video contribution over unmanaged IP networks
Net Insight has introduced the Nimbra VA 210 video appliance, which is designed to enable remove video feeds over standard Internet connections. The product is designed to bring contribution-quality video transmission capabilities to over-the-top (OTT) and other content providers who don’t have their own dedicated fiber-optic networks, as well as expand the locations from which video programming can originate.According to Per Lindgren, CTO and vice president of business development at Net Insight, “first-mile connectivity” has proved a limiting factor in delivering contribution-quality video content. Frequently, a dedicated first-mile network has been required to provide the robust transmission characteristics necessary to ensure this video quality, particularly in comparison to the “best effort” schemes of typical Internet connections. The Nimbra VA 210, through a combination of “content aware” forward error correction and selective retransmission, provides a more robust connection over standard IP links, opening the door to use of unmanaged IP networks for transmitting contribution video.Lindgren says he foresees the 1-RU Nimbra VA 210 enabling the broadcast of sports, concerts, and other events at remote locations, as well as increasing the availability of regional and niche content. The comparatively low-cost of both the unit and the connections it enables also should make video production more affordable for OTT content providers. The VA 210 is designed to be used in conjunction with higher-end Nimbra media switch routers (MSRs), extending video contribution networks by feeding content from remote sites to a nearby Nimbra MSR point of presence.“Until now, the high cost, availability issues, and lease times associated with managed first-mile connectivity has made the contribution and production of Tier 2 and Tier 3 events, such as regional sports, a prohibitive venture,” Lindgren was quoted as saying in the press release announcing the VA 210. “With the launch of the Nimbra VA 210, there is now a way for operators, service providers, and broadcasters to overcome these challenges and begin addressing new markets suitable for cost-effective new media production.”Net Insight is taking orders for the Nimbra VA 210, deliveries scheduled to begin at the end of March 2013.

iWeb adds ADVA FSP 3000 to Montreal data center network
iWeb, a Canadian Internet hosting infrastructure provider, has installed the ADVA FSP 3000 throughout its Montreal data center network, according to ADVA Optical Networking. The fiber-optic network connects more than 35,000 servers in five locations. The FSP 3000’s combination of small footprint and low power consumption were two of the important selection criteria, ADVA asserts. Scalability, including the ability to support 100-Gbps transmission, also played a role, the company adds.“iWeb has built an impressive history focused on technology and, more importantly, using this technology to exceed customer expectations,” commented John Scherzinger, senior vice president of North American sales at ADVA Optical Networking. “The company has created a network that achieves 100 percent up-time and some of the fiercest response times in the industry. We're working with iWeb to help drive its network forward, to help the team achieve even more. This is the beginning of a partnership that will see iWeb scale to 100G and beyond.”“Our network is our critical competitive advantage. It's what differentiates us. It’s what sets us apart from the market,” said Cyrille Mertes, CTO, iWeb. “Our network availability and response times are some of the best in the industry. That's why it's vital that we only work with the most dynamic partners. ADVA Optical Networking reflects our own drive for customer satisfaction and the desire to push technology. You only need to look at the small footprint and low power consumption of the ADVA FSP 3000 to understand this.”
