MITEQ offers 43.7-Gbps modulator driver amplifier
MITEQ Inc. has introduced the Model AMFOD-30K450, a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator driver. The device is targeted at Lithium Niobate optical modulators for OC-768 long-haul fiber-optic communications applications. The driver has an output drive voltage of up to 8 V with 30 dB of small signal gain, flat up to 40 GHz with a frequency cutoff at 80 kHz. It’s hermetically sealed package is 0.31-in. thick by 0.65-in. wide by 1.2-in. long, with straight or bent pin options. GPPO connectors provide input and output, with a separate GPPO input for the balanced input termination. For digital stream input, the eye zero crossing at the output can be adjusted from 40% to 70%. RMS additive jitter is less than 750 fs with rise and fall times of better than 8 ps. Both input and output port VSWRs are better than 10 dB.The Model AMFOD-30K450 is fully compliant with relevant standards and provides reliable operation from -40°C to +85°C, MITEQ says. The device draws about 380 mA from a supply of 6 V to 8 V.

Telkom South Africa taps Alcatel-Lucent for GPON FTTH, VDSL2
South Africa’s Telkom SA has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to supply equipment for a broadband network upgrade that will involve both fiber- and copper-based architectures.Part of Telkom SA’s “Network Transformation Initiative,” the upgrades will see VDSL2 technology applied to existing infrastructure that serves 4.4 million subscribers. In other locales, the carrier will deploy GPON-based fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-building (FTTB).Alcatel-Lucent is supplying its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) product family, which will support both the GPON and VDSL2 upgrades via the same platform.Said Daniel Jaeger, Alcatel-Lucent vice president for Africa, “We are delighted to meet Telkom SA’s needs with a turn-key solution that will enable them to provide the new kinds of services their subscribers demand. Our equipment will facilitate Telkom SA’s drive to more effectively compete with mobile service providers by delivering a better customer experience.”

FibreCo Telecommunications uses Corning fiber in open access network
Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) reveals that South African open-access network provider FibreCo Telecommunications is deploying Corning optical fiber in a new high-speed, long-distance fiber-optic network in South Africa.Construction of the FibreCo network began in April, and the first link is expected to be completed in 2013. The cable contains both Corning SMF-28e+ LL and LEAF fibers. Phase 1 of the roll out includes a 2,000-km link between Johannesburg and Cape Town that also connects Bloemfontein, East London, and Port Elizabeth. The project’s total distance will cover 12,000 km.ZTE received the contract for the construction of FibreCo’s network and supply of equipment.“We are excited to utilize Corning optical fiber for our project,” said Arif Hussain, FibreCo CEO. “Many submarine optical cables now connect South Africa to the rest of the world, and a significant increase in terrestrial fiber capacity supply is required. Our network will provide the necessary high-speed capacity in South Africa as well as the ability for our customers to easily upgrade their networks to higher data rates without the need to re-install fiber.”This is the first deployment of SMF-28e+ LL fiber in South Africa. SMF-28e+ LL is designed to offer low attenuation values and low polarization mode dispersion (PMD) with ITU G.652.D-compliant performance for longer spans and reach. Also, SMF-28e+ LL fiber enables more repair margin, Corning asserts. LEAF, meanwhile, is the most widely deployed, non-zero dispersion shifted fiber in the world, the company says. It also has lowest attenuation and largest effective area of any ITU-T G.655-compatible optical fiber, Corning claims.
