InnoTrans to supply Chromadigm transmitters to major U.S. cable operator
InnoTrans Communications says it has received a multiyear contract to supply its Chromadigm 1550-nm ITU-T compliant forward optical transmitters to one of the five largest U.S. cable operators. The company declined to further identify the cable MSO customer. The Chromadigm C-Band transmitters are designed to enable cable operators to deploy the systems initially for node splitting and fiber reclamation, then evolve towards fiber deep or RF over glass (RFoG) architectures without interrupting services. They support up to 16 wavelengths.“The Chromadigm full-band forward-path DWDM solution is being widely adopted by the MSO community in both the U.S. and Canada,” asserts Mani Ramachandran, InnoTrans CEO. “The solution provides operators the ability to do full eight-way node segmentation in both forward and reverse directions on one fiber, for distances up to 65 km using InnoTrans’ optical hub solutions. In addition, the patented Chromadigm solution is chirp free, which provides immunity to fiber dispersion and filter ripple, and includes clipping mitigation for pristine QAM signal delivery.”

Asia America Gateway undersea cable system to get 40-Gbps upgrade via Mitsubishi Electric
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TOKYO:6503) says it has received a contract to upgrade the transpacific Asia America Gateway undersea cable network. The upgrade will see the per-wavelength transmission capacity of the submarine fiber-optic network increase to 40-Gbps using coherent technology. The Asia America Gateway undersea system’s total capacity will increase 5X to 5.2 Tbps when the upgrade is completed, a milestone Mitsubishi expects to reach by the third quarter of 2012. The award follows a field trial of the 40-Gbps coherent technology. The Asia America Gateway Cable Network currently operates at 10 Gbps over 20,000 km of fiber-optic cable. It connects seven Southeast Asian countries to the United States via 10 landing stations. A consortium of 19 telecommunications carriers own the cable, eight of whom contracted for the upgrade. The eight include AT&T, Brunei International Gateway, CAT Telecom, Philippines Long Distance Telephone (PLDT), StarHub, Telekom Malaysia, Telstra, and Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT)."We are proud to be selected as the supplier for the AAG Cable Network capacity upgrade," said Masahiro Tsukamoto, general manager of Mitsubishi Electric's Telecommunication Systems Department. "Having received an order for similar work on the transatlantic TAT-14 Cable Network, Mitsubishi Electric will become the first supplier of 40-Gbps upgrades to both transpacific and transatlantic networks. We now look forward to building on these wins to assist other network operators with high-quality upgrades."

Cortina Systems 100-Gbps ASSP targets converged OTN and Ethernet
Building on its introduction of the CS604x devices for 40-Gbps applications, communications semiconductor vendor Cortina Systems, Inc. has moved to 100-Gbps support via the new CS605x family of integrated transport processors. The new application-specific standard product (ASSP) family supports both Ethernet and Optical Transport Network (OTN) for platforms that transport and aggregate 10-Gbps, 40-Gbps, and 100-Gbps packet traffic.According to Alex Afshar, product line manager, transport products at Cortina, the company sees the new CS605x family as a good fit for a variety of platform designs, including those targeted at data centers, Carrier Ethernet, core and edge router, DWDM, and packet-optical transport applications where high-speed and support for either Ethernet or OTN is required – and particularly where both play a role.Elements of the family are compatible with both multi-lane Ethernet and coherent-enabled modules. Afshar says the company already has design wins in both areas. The devices feature Cortina’s proprietary high-gain forward error correction (HG-FEC) technology, which offers 9.4-dB gain at 7% overhead. The three devices in the family consume between 10 and 12 W, Afshar says. The CS605x line -- which includes the CS6051/53 (for full-featured aggregation and mapping; the CS6053 doesn’t have the HG-FEC), CS6052 for Ethernet and OTN mapping, and CS6054 for those who only need 40- and 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) support -- offers the following additional features:100GbE and 3x40GbE PCS/MAC termination with performance monitoring and networking support.Support for IEEE 1588v2 Transparent Clock mode, as defined in IEEE P1588D2.2.Integrated jitter attenuation and clean up PLLs.Direct interface to 100G and 40G optical modules supporting OTL4.10, CAUI, OTL3.4, and XLAUI interfaces.A 120G-capable Interlaken packet interface to NPUs, TMs and FPGAs.The CS605x family has been sampling since October. They should be available in production volumes sometime in the first half of 2012.
