OIF looks at lower-cost 100-Gbps transmitter
The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) says it will launch a program to develop specifications for what it calls an Integrated Dual Polarization Quadrature Modulated Transmitter Assembly (ITXA). The ITXA effort aims to define a common electrical interface that allows the inclusion of other modulator technology that could enable lower cost and smaller transmitter assembly size. The effort responds to concerns that transmission technology based on the current dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with coherent detection specifications within the OIF’s long-haul DWDM implementation agreements may be too costly for metro and high-density applications. In fact, some systems houses have already announced their intention to pursue other 100-Gbps modulation schemes for such applications (see “ADVA Optical Networking offers cost-reduced 100-Gbps for metro networks”).“Our existing Polarization Multiplexed Quadrature Modulated Transmitter has been successfully adopted in ultra long haul and metro markets,” said Karl Gass, the OIF’s Physical and Link Layer Working Group vice-chair and a consultant of TriQuint Semiconductor. “This companion project will address cost and performance trade-offs necessary to open higher volume applications.”

US Signal turns to Cisco for 100-Gbps network upgrade
Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) says that the successful completion of a 100-Gbps DWDM trial with US Signal has led the provider of regional transport, data center, and IP services to deploy 100-Gbps technology on parts of its network. US Signal will use the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) system with coherent-enabled 100-Gbps interfaces for the roll out.The trial ran over a link engineered for 10 Gbps between Chicago, IL, and Kalamazoo, MI. US Signal will now deploy the capabilities on 12,200 miles of fiber in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin.In addition to the ONS 15454 MSTP, US Signal also will use the Cisco Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 9000, Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches, and the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) within its network.Said Dan Olrich, chief operating officer at US Signal, "We have utilized Cisco technology for almost a decade, and many of our customers also deploy Cisco solutions. Cisco has established itself as the industry leader in enabling 100G capabilities. Working with Cisco allows us to seamlessly scale from 10G to 100G services with the flip of a switch. The trial has shown us how easily we can enhance our network so our customers worry less about bandwidth, reliability and speed, and spend more time focusing on new services."Cisco’s coherent 100-Gbps capabilities leverage technology gained through the acquisition of CoreOptics in May 2010."The demand for next-generation services requires a more robust network capable of 100G services,. Avago Technologies beats EMCORE in court
Avago Technologies (NASDAQ:AVGO) says that a US Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling by the International Trade Commission (ITC) that EMCORE Corp. had infringed on Avago patents. The patents covered parallel optical communications technology.The ruling on November 14, 2011 from the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed a Final Determination, Cease and Desist Order, and Exclusion Order the ITC issued saying that EMCORE violated Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, as amended, 19 U.S.C. 1337. Specifically, the ITC ruled that EMCORE had infringed Avago’s U.S. Patent 5,359,447 by importing and selling optoelectronics for optical communication systems, including parallel fiber optics products and components.Emcore appealed the ITC ruling, challenging the validity of Avago’s patents, but the Federal Circuit Court rejected that appeal.The court ruling is the latest milestone in a saga that began when Avago first complained to the ITC in 2009 (see "ITC agrees to investigate Avago complaint against Emcore").“Avago is pleased the Federal Circuit has upheld the ITC’s decision, and we remain committed to protecting and enforcing our patent and intellectual property rights,” said Patricia H. McCall, General Counsel of Avago. “The decision validates the strength of our intellectual property in parallel fiber optics.”The case is Emcore Corporation v. International Trade Commission and Avago Technologies Fiber IP (Singapore) PTE. LTD., Avago Technologies General IP (Singapore) PTE. LTD., and Avago Technologies, LTD., No. 2011-1069. The case below is In the Matter of Certain Optoelectronic Devices, Components Thereof and Products Containing the Same, case number 337-TA-669, in the U.S. International Trade Commission.
