Medicine Park Telephone delivers FTTH services to Oklahoma communities with ADTRAN
ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says it has been selected by Medicine Park Telephone to provide broadband equipment for the operator’s broadband stimulus-funded, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network. The FTTH network will deliver high-speed broadband services to remote communities in Oklahoma.Although telephony services are available, residents in these communities are vastly unserved – up to 100% of the households in some of the regions – by any type of high-speed broadband, ADTRAN says. Medicine Park’s new FTTH service opens up connectivity to thousands of households in these remote communities – some of which are isolated by a national wildlife refuge and others that reside in the former Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in southwestern Indian Territory.Medicine Park Telephone is deploying ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 broadband access platform to deliver high-speed broadband, IP telephony, and high-definition television services to residential customers, plus business Ethernet services to small business customers. The Total Access 5000 delivers these services over an all-Ethernet access platform, with the GPON infrastructure providing up to 2.5Gbps of bandwidth.Medicine Park is also using ADTRAN's modular Ethernet access gateway, the NetVanta 8044M, in combination with the Total Access 5000, for 4G/LTE cell-site mobile backhaul to further increase communications accessibility for its underserved customer base.“For so long, residents in our remote communities have been lucky just to have reliable phone service, let alone any sort of high-speed broadband capability. Now, for the first time, we are able to deliver any mix of telephone, Internet, and television services that our residential and business customers need to be connected with the rest of the country,” said Eddie Hilliary, president, Medicine Park Telephone. “With ADTRAN, we are able to do this with the latest optical network technology and can provide our customers with the most advanced, next-generation services and infrastructure.”

Epson intros VCXOs for optical networks and mobile base station equipment
Epson Electronics America, Inc. (EEA) says it has begun shipping samples of the VG-4513CB series of voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXO). Designed for use in optical transport networks and LTE (Long Term Evolution) base stations, the VG-4513CB uses a high-frequency fundamental crystal to achieve output frequencies up to 500 MHz with no spurs and very low phase noise and low jitter. The VG-4513CB also comes in a package that is 87% smaller than existing VCXOs, and has excellent vibration sensitivity, the company claims.Epson says the VG-4513CB is the industry’s first VCXO to deliver output frequencies up to 500 MHz without using a phase-locked loop (PLL) or frequency multiplier. Instead the device uses a high-frequency fundamental-mode AT-cut crystal, which Epson claims results in better reliability, lower power, and lower phase noise than existing 500-MHz VCXO products. This approach enables the VG-4513CB to attain jitter of 50 fs RMS at 491.52 MHz. Unlike PLLs and frequency multipliers, Epson says the fundamental technology does not generate spurs. The high-frequency fundamental-mode crystal is fabricated using Epson’s QMEMS technology. QMEMS combines the superior material characteristics of quartz with micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) fabrication techniques. In addition to allowing reliable fundamental-mode oscillation, QMEMS enables size reduction of the VCXO and improves vibration sensitivity.Epson’s VG-4513CB is delivered in a 5.0x3.2x1.3-mm package, which makes its footprint 87% smaller than traditional 14x9-mm VCXO products. This size reduction enables very dense designs such as multi-channel optical networking equipment and multi-channel multiple input multiple output (MIMO) LTE base stations.Epson also claims that the QMEMS technology enables Epson to improve vibration resistance three-fold over previous products. At 0.6 ppb/g, Epson’s VG-4513CB provides a stable frequency reference for base stations that must be installed in challenging environments, such as near railroad tracks.“With their compact design, high precision, and high stability, Epson’s new products will contribute to the success of LTE,” said Masayuki Morozumi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Epson's microdevices operations division.

DukeNet expands network across four additional states
DukeNet Communications, a regional provider of fiber-based services in the U.S. Southeast, says it has completed a significant expansion of its core fiber-optic network. The existing network in North Carolina and South Carolina has been extended to enable DukeNet to deliver services throughout select markets in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. The additional markets include Birmingham and Huntsville, AL; Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville, TN; Athens and Atlanta, GA; and Richmond, VA, with planned expansion into Ashburn, VA.DukeNet says it crafted this expanded footprint by building greenfield DWDM infrastructure linking key segments, while also connecting cell towers across the region with long-haul and metro fiber cable infrastructure. The service provider says it is also implementing network enhancements into and within Atlanta and Ashburn that will provide interconnect capability from its regional markets into some of the industry’s most critical and busy Internet hubs. This will further increase the company’s network reach by connecting into many of the country’s biggest data centers in those cities and instantly enabling national and international reach.“This expanded network footprint greatly increases the value of the infrastructure we have built out over the first 18 years of our history,” said Tony Cockerham, DukeNet’s chief operating officer. “We now provide unique routing into Atlanta that avoids the traditional I-85 transit route, and our planned expansion into Ashburn will avoid the I-95 corridor used by many others.“Much of the expansion is being completed using coherent, 100-Gbps-capable infrastructure, which will enable us to efficiently and reliably deliver the high-bandwidth services our customers are demanding,” he added.
