Ovum: PON OLT sales dropped in 2012
Sales of PON optical line terminals (OLTs) for FTTx networks dropped in 2012, according to Ovum’s recently published Market Share Report: 2012 FTTx, DSL, and CMTS Units. A slowing of EPON sales in major Asian markets was to blame, according to the market research firm.OLT port shipments reached just over 4.1 million in 2012, a retreat of 9% versus 2011 levels. All the news wasn’t bad for PON vendors, however. The growing number of PON-based FTTx subscribers worldwide boosted sales of optical network terminals (ONTs) and optical network units (ONUs), Ovum reports. Sales of such customer premises equipment grew 43% year on year, to 40.3 million units.Overall, the figures would suggest that the focus for many major FTTx deployments has shifted from passing potential customers to connecting them.Julie Kunstler, telecom components analyst at Ovum, says that the shrinkage in OLT shipments was influenced by three markets. “The decline was due to maturing EPON network builds in China, Japan, and Korea,” she explains. “This decline was not offset fully by large GPON network builds throughout the world. Shipments of total PON OLT port market will continue to decline unless there are major GPON network builds in India, Indonesia, Brazil, and/or Russia.”Meanwhile, Kunstler reports that PON equipment is being used to support applications other than triple-play service delivery. “We began to see the use of PON in wireless backhaul, particularly for small cell sites where there is technical fit and geographic overlap,” she says. “We are also seeing PON deployments for enterprise optical LAN. Next-Gen PON’s numbers will remain small as the need for 10G PON in FTTB MDU deployments is fading away, leaving wireless-backhaul and enterprise as possible markets.”ZTE was the 2012 OLT market share leader, with 42%. Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent followed, with 36% and 8% market shares, respectively. The same three companies, in the same order, topped the ONT/ONU shipment list as well, although more tightly bunched. ZTE led with 32% of the market, followed by Huawei with 31% and Alcatel-Lucent with 15%.

RASCOM extends fiber optic network ring in Europe
Fiber-optic network services provider RASCOM says it has activated two recently constructed DWDM fiber routes: Amsterdam – Copenhagen and Frankfurt – Stockholm. RASCOM says the new routes help create a diversified ring structure that connects Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and back to Copenhagen and Stockholm. The company says it can now offer network services on two DWDM systems of its own that offer bandwidth of up to 2?8.8 Tbps.RASCOM spent $4 million to create the new fiber cable system. “During the recent 5 years, within the frames of realizing a long-term development strategy, the company has been consistently updating and developing the existing network and moving from the leased circuits to its own DWDM capacity,” comments V.I. Kireev, CJSC “RASCOM” general director. “The DWDM system is built based on the up-to-date high-tech equipment manufactured by the company CIENA, and it allows us to meet the constantly growing demand of the inter-carrier market for the communications channels. As a result of adding two new sections to our existing network, the CJSC 'RASCOM' has extended its capabilities in arranging European circuits over different routes, offering protected capacity and end-to-end monitoring of the services to be provided.”The service provider monitors its network 24 hours a day from its network management center in Saint-Petersburg, according to RASCOM’s technical director, O. V. Klimovsky. Through its network maintenance architecture, RASCOM can minimize restoration times and guarantee that it will meet the service-level agreements (SLAs) its customers demand.“Launching the European ring structure has allowed RASCOM to transit to unique service installation term standards on all the sections of its network,” Klimovsky continues. “RASCOM guarantees, to the customers, minimum (not longer than 2-3 weeks) circuit arranging terms, both on Russian territory and in Europe.”The network circuits also demonstrate latency as good as or better than its competitors, Klimovsky adds. Customers can assess delay data over the circuit at both service installation and usage stages.RASCOM now offers fully protected circuits with capacity of up to 10 Gbps and connects with the major traffic exchange points in Moscow (MSK-IX), Saint-Petersburg (SPB-IX), Stockholm (NetNod), Frankfurt (DE-CIX), and Amsterdam (AMS-IX).

Southern Telecom completes fiber backbone for Georgia State University
Southern Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of utility Southern Company, says it has expanded the fiber-optic network for Georgia State University, a leading research university in Atlanta, GA. The operator has completed the installation of a Northern Fiber Optic Ring.Southern Telecom leveraged its inventory of existing ducts in Atlanta’s central business district and expanded its duct system reach to complete what it asserts is a highly reliable and redundant, 432-count fiber backbone network for Georgia State.“Southern Telecom has supported Georgia State University for many years,” said Leif Ericson, business development manager with Southern Telecom. “Georgia State has had significant growth in student enrollment and infrastructure. Due to this growth, Southern Telecom has worked with Georgia State to meet its ever-evolving state of the art communications needs.”The new network serves as an extension of the Southern Fiber Optic Ring that Southern Telecom created for the university several years ago. The Northern Ring complements the existing Southern Ring by connecting 13 additional buildings to the campus network footprint. By adding fiber laterals to new and existing buildings, including two carrier hotels, the university has significant network capacity to meet its student and faculty needs well into the future, Southern Telecom says.“We look forward to continued assistance from Southern Telecom in meeting our future telecommunication needs,” said J.L. Albert, Georgia State University’s assistant vice president for information systems and technology and CIO.The project features multiple ring architectures and redundant hubs.
