Zhone intros compact GPON ONT at FTTH Conference 2013
Zhone Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) has expanded its indoor GPON optical network terminal (ONT) line to include the zNid 2301, which was released at the FTTH Conference 2013 in London last week. Created for residential and small business services, the zNID 2301 GPON ONT provides many features, including high quality voice and data services and multicast video support, in what the company claims is the smallest available form factor on the market.Zhone says the zNID 2301 is ideal for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or small business deployments where high-speed data needs to be transported reliably. Due to its small form factor, the zNID 2301 ONT may be mounted on a wall or placed free-standing on a desktop. It also operates well in conjunction with separate residential gateway devices such as routers and Wi-Fi access points to provide flexible triple-play configurations. It can be equipped with a battery-backup system if necessary."Zhone's indoor GPON ONTs are designed not only to be a lower cost alternative to outdoor ONT solutions, but to also deliver the full range of advanced IP voice, data and video services," said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone. "The zNID 2301 GPON ONT is ideal for residential or small business customers looking to improve broadband and high-speed connection reliability."Compliant with standard OMCI definitions, the zNID 2301 is easily managed from remote sites and supports the full range of FCAPS (fault-management, configuration, accounting, performance, and security) functions  for supervision, monitoring, and maintenance. Zhone provides a fully managed, end-to-end GPON product portfolio, allowing its customers to buy a complete and fully tested suite of systems from one source.

Huber+Suhner’s new fiber-optic connector doubles fiber density
Swiss company Huber+Suhner AG says its new fiber-optic connector will double the density of optical fibers per rack and improve fiber handling in central offices and data centers. Launched at the FTTH Conference 2013 in London, the new connector is designed to significantly reduce space requirements, helping to control costs and improve efficiency. The LC-XD fiber-optic connector, available in both simplex and duplex (uniboot) versions, handles up to 4032 fibers in one rack, double the density handled by previous components. The connector is equipped with a rigid, extended lever that employs an proprietary push/pull mechanism (patent pending), at the same time allowing greater density and more efficient handling. For both installation and ongoing handling, vertical space and finger access at the connection are supported; the LC-XD connector, due to its rigid lever, also allows mating and unmating from a distance.Space is always an issue for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications, with their high fiber density requirements, says Patrick Zaina, product manager at Huber+Suhner. The two most important factors that determine the cost of the passive infrastructure in a central office or data center are space and handling, and focusing on either one of these can lead to increased costs. The key is to achieve a balance between packing density and good handling. With performance continuing to increase, costs per unit are falling and this also puts greater pressure on the issue of the density.“The availability of infrastructure space is always challenging,” said Zaina, “both in urban networks and rural locations, and this has significant cost implications for the running of central offices for FTTH services. Packing density is a critical factor in the FTTH business and is the background to the development of our new LC-XD fiber optic connector. Our exciting new product combines extreme density with excellent handling.”The simplex version of the LC-XD connector is aimed at FTTH networks, where a single optical fiber is generally required per household. The connectors can be strung together in two directions and are pluggable even with indirect contact. Huber+Suhner developed the LC-XD uniboot duplex connector for use primarily in data center applications. This connector allows polarity flipping without the need for additional tools.LC-XD connectors are compatible with standard adaptors, mini LC adaptors, and optical transceivers, the company says.

Michel Combes new Alcatel-Lucent CEO
The board of directors at Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has approved the appointment of Michel Combes as the company’s new chief executive officer, effective April 1, 2013. Combes will also join the company’s board, subject to the approval of shareholders at the Alcatel-Lucent annual general meeting on May 7, 2013.He replaces Ben Verwaayen, who resigned February 7 after Alcatel-Lucent announced continued losses in its fiscal fourth quarter.Combes, 51, has more than 20 years experience in the telecommunications industry on a worldwide basis. He was chief executive of Vodafone Europe and a board member of Vodafone PLC. During his career, he has held the positions of chairman and chief executive of TDF Group as well as chief financial officer and senior executive vice-president of France Telecom.Philippe Camus, chairman of the board, said, “It is a great pleasure for us to welcome Michel Combes to Alcatel-Lucent. As chief executive he will be responsible for delivering sustainable profitability. His deep knowledge of the industry as well as his experience of major business and financial transformation at a worldwide level will be pivotal in helping the company pursue its aggressive transformation, while meeting customer needs with disruptive innovation.Combes will have his work cut out for him. Verwaayen, hired in 2008 (see "Alcatel-Lucent names new CEO, chairman of the Board of Directors"), failed to create a consistently profitable company during his tenure, despite numerous reorganizations (for the most recent example, see "Alcatel-Lucent streamlines operations").Nevertheless, Camus thanked Verwaayen for his years of service for the company and wished him all the best for his future endeavors, adding that the new and former CEOs would work closely together over the next few weeks to ensure a smooth transition.“Alcatel-Lucent is an unrivalled technology leader in the telecommunications industry with an immense array of talent and capabilities in R&D facing major challenges. This is a company I know well and I look forward to succeeding Ben, working with the key international customers, and driving the business into sustained profitability for its customers, employees and shareholders,” said Combes.Effective immediately, Alcatel-Lucent’s board of directors also approved the appointment of Jean C. Monty as vice-chairman of the board.Monty, 64, is a Canadian national. He began his career at Bell Canada in 1974 and held numerous positions in the BCE (Bell Canada Enterprises) group. He joined Nortel Networks in October 1992 as president and chief operating officer before being nominated president and chief executive officer in March 1993. On April 24, 2002, Monty, then chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Bell Canada Enterprises, retired after a 28-year career.Camus concluded, “We are fortunate to have such an experienced colleague to support Michel Combes in his new role. I’m looking forward to working more closely with Jean and I’m convinced Alcatel-Lucent will benefit from his incredible knowledge of our business.”
