ASSIA offers DSL Expresse 2.5 for VDSL network monitoring and service optimization
ASSIA Inc. has released DSL Expresse 2.5, an upgraded version of its flagship product designed to monitor and optimize DSL networks. The upgrade includes a trial version of ASSIA Expresse Pro, which enables technicians to monitor and troubleshoot DSL networks using smartphones and tablets.DSL Expresse 2.5 provides overall monitoring of DSL network performance and is compatible with all standards-based DSL equipment, ASSIA says. It also will optimize the performance of the network via dynamic spectrum management (DSM) technology. For example, DSM works with vectoring to extend the reach and expand the capacity of VDSL2 networks beyond vectoring alone, says Jerome Joanny, director of product management for ASSIA. Thus, VDSL2 networks could support 100 Mbps at greater distances than the 400 m touted in recent vectoring technology announcements (see, for example, “Alcatel-Lucent offers VSDL2 vectoring to support 100-Mbps services”), he asserts.DSM is based on the ITU-T G.ploam physical layer OAM specifications. The tool set also includes VDSL Predictor, which carriers can use to assess how well existing copper infrastructure will support VDSL-level services. Meanwhile, Service Recommender uses network-wide performance analysis to enable operators to target customers for up-sell of high-margin services. The new version of DSL Expresse also features enhanced reporting capabilities. Finally, ASSIA Expresse Pro is a mobile application that works with DSL Expresse 2.5 to deliver performance metrics to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The ability to use such mobile devices for metric monitoring and troubleshooting promises to save operators significant money in both reducing technician response time and obviating the need for more expensive, dedicated test equipment, Joanny says.

BTI Systems proNX SLA Portal strengthens mobile backhaul and Ethernet business services offerings
BTI Systems has introduced the proNX SLA Portal, a cloud-based service assurance and performance monitoring tool targeted mainly at mobile backhaul and other Ethernet-based services applications. As its name implies, the proNX SLA Portal is designed to enable service providers to monitor and enforce service level agreements (SLAs). In particular, the tool should prove beneficial to those wholesaling mobile-backhaul services, according to BTI’s John Beatty and Glenn Thurston. The new SLA Portal is a component of BTI’s proNX Management Suite that is sold as an add-on to the basic suite. The proNX SLA Portal combines data collectors within the carrier’s network with cloud-based software tools. It enables real-time monitoring of network performance based on the ITU Y.1731 standard in the context of existing SLAs. It can monitor individual services across up to 7,000 cell sites, offering insight into a range of SLA parameters, performance metrics, and circuit details. It also offers customized reports.Alarm thresholds are user defined, so that alerts can be received before end customers detect degradation in service performance. The BTI Systems sources say that the SLA Portal is currently available – in fact, it is currently being installed in customer networks. Customers can outsource the cloud service aspects of the tool’s use or leverage their own cloud service support infrastructure. BTI Systems has partnered with a cloud development partner, but Beatty and Thurston declined to identify who this is.While the two BTI executives believe mobile backhaul services will drive most of the initial demand for the proNX SLA Portal, they said the tool also could prove very helpful for the monitoring of off-net Ethernet services provision and related applications.

Australia’s NBN Co awards MDU contract to Optimal and OFS
The National Broadband Network of Australia (NBN Co) has picked OFS and Optimal Cable Services to supply fiber-optic cables and connectivity products for deployment inside multiple dwelling units (MDUs). These products will support NBN Co's FTTx broadband build-out in Australia, which will bring fiber to 93% of Australian homes, schools, and businesses, initially providing broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps at the wholesale level. "NBN is pleased to add OFS and Optimal Cable to the range of suppliers we are working with to deliver the National Broadband Network to Australian homes and businesses. As we recently announced our 12-month rollout schedule – with construction to start in areas covering over half a million premises – today's announcement is an important part of the development of our supply chain," said NBN Co CEO, Mike Quigley.NBN will use OFS connectivity products to connect broadband subscribers in MDUs. NBN Co has chosen AllWave FLEX+ fiber, the latest bend-optimized singlemode fiber offering from OFS, which is compliant to the ITU-T G.657.A2 specification.  NBN has also selected several different OFS assemblies for use in tight spaces in combination with the advanced fiber."OFS and Optimal are proud to supply NBN's key multiple dwelling unit customers with assemblies that provide the enhanced flexibility and simplicity of installation enabled through our unique fiber and cable designs," said Timothy Pillow, senior vice president global marketing and sales for OFS.NBN granted a similar award to Corning Cable Systems as well (see "Corning Cable Systems inks NBN fiber deal for multiple dwelling units").
