FTTx networks target of Greenlee Communications 910FS Optical Fusion Splicer
Greenlee Communications has unveiled the 910FS Optical Fusion Splicer. The unit will help technicians splice a variety of fiber-optic cables in both indoor and outdoor applications – but will be particularly useful for FTTx networks, the company says. The 910FS has easy-to-change adapters that enable rapid changes from 250-?m bare fiber to 900-?m buffered fiber. It also features dual cameras with 240X magnification and a 5.7-inch color LCD screen. The splicer supports SC and LC splice-on fiber-optic connectors, while its auto core alignment technology reduces preparation time and yields lower connection losses, Greenlee asserts. The 910FS comes with 60 preset splice modes as well as custom user-defined modes. It can store up to 5,000 splice results. The unit is powered by a long-life Li-ion battery. The Greenlee Communications 910FS Optical Fusion Splicer is available as either a standard Fusion Splicer and Cleaver Kit, or a Contractor Fusion Splicer Kit.

China to require FTTH for new homes
China Daily reports that a new policy from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will mandate that all new residences have a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connection where such broadband access networks are available. The policy, which goes into effect April 1 of this year, also calls for operators to provide equal subscriber access to competitive service providers. The China Daily story cites another report from Economic Information Daily that the Chinese government hopes to have 40 million families connected to fiber-optic networks by 2015.Several carriers in the country have embarked on ambitious FTTH expansion projects (see, for example, "Alcatel-Lucent to expand broadband FTTH network for China Telecom"). The Economic Information Daily story pointed to China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd., as an example. That carrier, the nation's second largest telecom by subscriber count, added 10 million families to its FTTH roster in 2012, the paper reported.
