TraceSpan adds TR-069 support to GPON protocol analyzer
TraceSpan Communications, a broadband analysis and monitoring company, has introduced a new version of the GPON Xpert protocol analyzer that includes embedded support for TR-069.The growing popularity of in-home broadband devices is driving increased industry-adoption of TR-069, the CPE WAN Management Protocol defined by the Broadband Forum. Adding support for TR-069 to the GPON Xpert analyzer addresses the increased testing needs for configuration of services over GPON ONTs and GPON-fed residential gateways."The growth in FTTx deployments along with the increasing number of TR-069-enabled devices has created a strong need for testing and troubleshooting these units," said Dr. Hanan Herzberg, TraceSpan founder and CEO. "We have responded to our customers' demands to address this need with the addition of TR-069 to our GPON Xpert analyzer. Supporting the GPON-fed TR-069-gateways expands GPON Xpert's capabilities to a new area and maintains its position as the leading multi-layer GPON testing tool in the market."TR-069 support is included in GPON Xpert's upper layer analysis module. It will be provided as a free upgrade to existing GPON Xpert customers who have the upper layer option and are under a maintenance contract, as well as to those who renew their maintenance within this timeframe. These include enhancements to the validation test mechanism for automatically validating the Ethernet VLAN Tagging parameters, allowing expansion for applications such as WT-255-based interoperability testing, the latest amendments of the ITU G.988 recommendation for OMCI and those of G.984.3 for the TC layer, including support of the PON-ID maintenance capability.

Entropic, Cortina offer advanced broadband router/gateway reference platform
Entropic Communications (NASDAQ: ENTR) has teamed up with Cortina Systems, Inc. to accelerate the development of high-performance customer premises equipment (CPE) including broadband routers and headless gateways for advanced data and TV applications.The collaboration leverages Entropic's MoCA Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) 2.0 compliant chipset paired with Cortina's CS7542 scalable digital home multi-service processor. The Cortina CS7542 is a dual ARM Cortex-A9 processor architecture with multiple enterprise-class acceleration engines. The CS7542's acceleration engines significantly reduce CPU load for Wi-Fi 802.11ac/n performance, freeing up the Cortex-A9 processor to provide value-add services and a future-proofed option for platform upgrades, the company claims.The partners assert that service providers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will now have access to a reference design that enables them to quickly develop products with the highest levels of performance and unsurpassed wire or wireless data throughput of 400 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps, depending on requirements. Entropic says its MoCA 2.0 chipset enables operators to offer a reliable whole-home network backbone with backward interoperability to existing MoCA 1.x networks for multi-room DVR, streaming HD VoD content, and extending Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home to support streaming video and data services to tablets and other mobile devices, all on the same coaxial cable."Our collaboration with Cortina enables service providers to push the limits on delivering the fastest and most reliable way to stream whole-home, over-the-top, and on-demand content while still delivering on the promise of supporting next-generation connected home entertainment services and applications," said Al Servati, vice president of marketing, connectivity group at Entropic. LightCounting: 2012 'reasonably good' for optical transceiver vendors
Despite what you may glean from earnings statements, this year hasn’t been so bad for optical transceiver sales, asserts LightCounting in a note heralding its upcoming Market Forecast Database for 2013-2017. Transceiver sales revenues will have risen 6% year-on-year by the time 2012 comes to a close, while unit volumes will have climbed 20%, the market research and analysis firm states. Considering the pressures their clients and service providers have faced this year, “manufacturers of optical components and modules had a reasonably good year in 2012,” LightCounting believes.Total transceiver revenues for 2012 should come in at more than $3 billion in 2012, LightCounting predicts. That figure will grow to $5 billion by 2017, in the company’s estimation.Transceivers for DWDM and Ethernet applications will have led the way this year. DWDM transceiver sales will have risen 10% in 2012, paced by rapid uptake in 100-Gbps ports. LightCounting expects DWDM optical transceiver sales to grow at a 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the next 5 years, which would put the niche at more than $1 billion by 2017.Meanwhile, Ethernet transceiver sales will have jumped 20% this year, making it a greater than $1 billion market already. The spike was greater than expected, LightCounting reports. As was the case with the DWDM segment, high-speed devices – in this case both 40 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet – will have provided the main spark. Such optical transceivers will have seen sales double in 2012, LightCounting forecasts. That said, 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules will have represented the lion’s share of the market when this year ends, accounting for more than 50% of sales.LightCounting says that 100 Gigabit Ethernet sales could exceed those of 10 Gigabit Ethernet devices by 2017 – provided transceiver developers succeed in creating and offering modules with smaller form factors and lower power consumption. Just what those modules will look like is something of a blur, LightCounting says. The firm notes that transceiver vendor roadmaps contain devices such as the CFP, CFP2, CFP4, and QSFP. Meanwhile, systems houses such as Cisco are creating their own 100 Gigabit Ethernet devices.
