Alphion India intros small form factor GPON OLT
Alphion India Private Ltd. has launched the AOLT-4200, small-form factor, optical line terminal (OLT) that specifically addresses rural broadband and mobile backhaul applications. While the OLT was launched in India, the company plans to market it worldwide, an Alphion source confirms.“The AOLT-4200 platform was developed at our Research and Design centers in Mumbai and Chennai to meet the unique requirements of the rural broadband environment and is being locally manufactured by our partner in Sriperumbudir, Tamil Nadu,” said Dr. Bharat P. Dave, chairman and managing director of Alphion India. “The platform also includes the critical timing features needed for wireless mobile backhaul. The ability to efficiently backhaul large amounts of data through GPON-based access networks solves a major constraint for today’s and future wireless networks. The AOLT-4200 addresses the bottlenecks and inefficiencies created in wireless backhaul networks as broadband access becomes dominant in base station backhaul and the size of the wireless cells decreases.”Fully compliant with IEEE 1588V2 Precision Time Protocol standard for base station timing and synchronization, the AOLT-4200 platform supports both legacy TDM circuit-switched transport through pseudo-wire emulation and next-generation packet-switched transport through native Ethernet over SynchE. The product line also provides assured availability through GPON’s optional network protection switching mechanisms.Alphion India says its GPON product range enables the convergence of wireless and wire-line networks as it is suitable for distribution of any-play voice, high-speed Internet, virtual private network (VPN) data, Ethernet Line (ELINE), Ethernet LAN (ELAN), video services (IPTV), rural broadband, and mobile datacom applications.

Tektronix offers 32-Gbps pattern generators, multi-channel bit error rate testers
Tektronix, Inc. has unveiled new instruments for 100-Gbps test and measurement applications. The new products include the PPG3000 Series Pattern Generators and PED3000 Series Bit Error Detectors, designed for optical and serial datacom testing at signal rates up to 32 Gbps. The bit error rate test units offer multi-channel pattern generation with channel-specific data programming to perform margin testing for high-speed applications such as 100 Gigabit Ethernet that require up to four channels, as well as 100-Gbps designs that use coherent detection. For testing coherent optical modulation formats, such as DP-QPSK, the PPG3000 Series, with its four phase-aligned channels, can be used with the Tektronix OM4000 Series Coherent Lightwave Signal Analyzer for real-time optimization and validation of coherent modulation formats. For bit error rate testing, the PED3000 Series can be combined with the PPG3000 to provide up to 32-Gbps BER analysis with multi-channel support, which will enable rapid identification of crosstalk issues in multi-lane designs, Tektronix says. For example, designers can simulate a 4x28G test bench to stress-test their IEEE 802.3ba receivers' designs. The combination of 32-Gbps data rate output and adjustable jitter insertion means technology developers can offer products with industry best margins while improving yields and performance, Tektronix asserts."The addition of the PPG3000 and PED3000 Series' to our BERT portfolio enables us to provide customers with choices for critical 100G standards testing," said Brian Reich, general manager, Performance Oscilloscopes, Tektronix. "For in-depth analysis requiring exacting signal integrity we continue to offer our award-winning BERTScope family. The new PPG3000 and PED3000 add the ability to conduc BERT tests that require multi-channel aligned data pattern generation up to 32-Gbps."The PPG3000 Series includes six models; depending on the model, users can have support for 30 Gbps or 32 Gbps and one, two, or four channels. Features include synchronized and phase adjustable outputs and PRBS or user-defined pattern generation. In particular, the instruments provide the flexibility needed to troubleshoot a wide range of design issues, including crosstalk, Tektronix says.Meanwhile, the PED3000 Series error detectors come in either one-channel or two-channel models. Tektronix says the instruments combine excellent sensitivity (< 20 mV measured at 30 Gbps) with what the company asserts is the industry's widest data range -- 32 Mbps to 32 Gbps. Error checking functions include PRBS or user-defined patterns, DC-coupled differential data inputs, single-ended clock input, and auto align to input pattern. The PPG3000 Series Pattern Generators and PED3000 Series Error Detectors will be available in late December 2012. Pricing starts at $85,000 US MSRP.

Bell Labs: Surging video consumption will push networks to the edge
With Christmas expected to bring another leap in ownership of tablets, smartphones, and other devices, new research suggests that increasing consumption of video content on such devices will push wired broadband networks to their absolute limits over the next decade. The study was carried out by Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext, Paris and NYSE: ALU).Bell Labs projections suggest that, by 2020, consumers in the United States alone will access seven hours of video each day – as opposed to 4.8 hours today – and will consume an increasing portion of this additional video on tablets, both at home and on the go.The research also points to a dramatic shift in viewing habits, as consumers switch from broadcast content to video-on-demand services, which will grow to 77% of daily consumption compared with 33% today. The projections also suggest a 12X increase in Internet video content from 90 exabytes in 2012 to 1.1 zettabyes in 2020. The growth will come as cloud services, news sites, and social networking applications become more video based and continuously accessible anywhere, anytime on tablets. The study also highlighted how these trends will stretch the capabilities the residential broadband networks many service providers use today. As the delivery of video content rapidly moves from traditional broadcast TV to the “unicast” delivery of personalized content to individuals, disproportionate pressure will be placed on the ‘‘IP edge” of these networks – the part of the network where most of the intelligence required to deliver sophisticated video and high-speed Internet services resides. Broadcast is a much more efficient way of delivering video services, so the move to unicast creates enormous bandwidth demands on networks.Marcus Weldon, chief technology officer at Alcatel-Lucent, said, “Delivery of video from the cloud and from content delivery networks to tablets, TVs, and smartphones – with guaranteed quality – presents an exciting new revenue opportunity for communications service providers, but only if they are prepared to take advantage of it. Left unmanaged, the rapid growth in video traffic can turn into a deluge and spell disaster. It is important to look at where service providers’ investments can have the most impact, and this research makes clear that the IP edge of both wireline and wireless networks – which are increasingly becoming one and the same – offers the greatest opportunity to improve network performance. At the same time, it also presents the greatest source of risk if not managed appropriately.”Bell Labs found that on-demand video services, such as high-definition premium movie services as well as video sharing sites, will become even more popular over the next five years. As a result, on-demand video will command an increased share of viewing hours, causing peak-hour traffic at the edge of new IP-based networks to grow 2.5X faster than the amount of traffic on the broadband access network connections reaching households. This challenge will need to be addressed, comprehensively, if communications service providers are to maintain their ability to deliver high-quality residential multimedia services to consumers, the company warns.
