Fujitsu, NTT, NEC to collaborate on 400-Gbps R&D
Fujitsu Ltd., Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT), and NEC Corp. say they will collaborate on research aimed at developing coherent-based 400-Gbps optical transmission technology. Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will sponsor the effort as part of its "Research and Development Project for the Ultra-high Speed and Green Photonic Networks" program.In addition to boosting data rates to 400 Gbps, researchers at the three firms will strive to develop technology that uses power more efficiently than current 100-Gbps technologies that rely on multi-phase modulation formats such as dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) and coherent receivers. The resultant transmission technology also will be expected to promote flexibility in fiber-optic networks, including the ability to adapt to changes in data volumes and transmission distances in real time.The companies plan to leverage both DP-QPSK and dual-polarization 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-16QAM). The resulting technology should support 400 Gbps in 60 channels, for a total fiber capacity of 24 Tbps. To realize such capacity over reaches similar to those current 100-Gbps transmission technology supports, Fujitsu, NTT, and NEC plan to develop compensation technology for nonlinear effects, which will complement existing compensation techniques for chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion. Finally, engineers at the three companies will tackle an adaptive modulation/demodulation scheme that will enable systems to deploy the optimal modulation format for a given link or service.The three companies have already collaborated on coherent-based 100-Gbps technology, including the digital coherent DSP-LSI semiconductor device most optical transponder developers are using in the first generation of 100-Gbps transponders (see, for example, "Fujitsu Optical Components announces 100-Gbps DP-QPSK transponder")."In 2012 the supply and demand of 100G products began to converge, leading to significant growth in deployments. The demand for network connectivity will only increase. Therefore, the need for 400G solutions that provide even greater bandwidth with the lowest possible power consumption and flexible, adaptive modulation will be critical," according to Dana Cooperson, vice president, network infrastructure, at market research and consultancy firm Ovum, Inc. "Fujitsu, NTT, and NEC's collaborative efforts to meet this growing demand illustrate what's possible when key industry players work together. Carriers, enterprises, governments, and others would be wise to look closely at this solution as they evolve their networks."The three companies hope to deliver 400-Gbps technology based on their combined efforts by 2014.

Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has unveiled a new high-density line card and a high-performance processing engine for its Cisco uBR10012 Universal Broadband Router (uBR10K) and Cisco Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). The new products will help cable MSOs evolve toward Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) architectures, Cisco asserts.CCAP is a CableLabs-defined set of specifications that aims to enable cable operators to migrate their networks to a more IP-friendly state. CCAP combines new CMTS and edge QAM technologies in a way that cable MSOs expect will reduce rack space and power requirements and accelerate the transition to an all-IP network (see "Paving the path to IP with CCAP").Cisco says its new Performance Routing Engine (PRE5) and 3 Gigabit Shared Port Adapter (3GSPA) effectively double the number of downstream channels the uBR10K can support -- from 576 to 1,152 -- without additional rack space. That translates to a total chassis capacity of more than 40 Gbps, Cisco says. The new modules will enable cable MSOs use their current uBR10K platforms to adopt an incremental deployment approach to using more ports via a pay-as-you-grow business model.Trials of the PRE5 and 3GSPA should begin in the first quarter of next year, Cisco says."Multiservice convergence for DOCSIS and video networks requires significant operational preparation and readiness,” comments Mark Palazzo, VP and general manager, Cable Access business unit at Cisco. “Cisco has been working closely with its cable service provider customers to offer a modular CCAP approach to getting them there with exactly what they need right here, right now, and to transition over time. We are doubling downstream capacity with the existing chassis by upgrading it with these two new modules. ESnet deploys 100GbE on LIMAN via Infinera DTN systems
Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) has announced that the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) has launched 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) services on the Long Island MAN portion of its infrastructure via Infinera’s DTN platform. The two parties recently collaborated on a demonstration of software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities on the same network, likely using the same platforms (see “Infinera, ESnet demo Transport SDN via Open Transport Switch”).The new 100GbE capabilities connect the DOE's Brookhaven National Laboratory to data centers in Manhattan and then onto ESnet's nationwide network. Among other projects, Brookhaven is one of two facilities in the U.S. through which data from the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS experiment is being made available to the 44 U.S. institutions involved in that project. The ATLAS effort aims to detect particles created by the proton-proton collisions as part of the search for the Higgs boson, a particle which scientists are beginning to believe may be the source of mass for all matter."We initially installed Infinera's DTN for our control plane testbed used to assess potentially disruptive technologies like ARCHSTONE multi-layer networking and Layer 2 OpenFlow," said ESnet Director Greg Bell (see “ESnet selects Infinera for network testbed”).
