Southern Photonics partners with I-Wave in Japan
New-Zealand-based test and measurement specialist Southern Photonics has announced a partnership with I-Wave Corp. in Japan.I-Wave, an importer and exporter of ultra high-speed optical transmission and access products in Japan, is an important partner for Southern Photonics as the company continues to expand out of New Zealand into the international photonics market.Working with I-Wave will also enable Southern Photonics to provide local channels for sales and support to the Japanese market.Andy Stevens, COO of Southern Photonics said, “We are really excited to be announcing this new partnership as we understand how important it is to develop relationships in growing markets in the current climate. I-Wave’s customer base fits perfectly with our product portfolio and will enable us to create a strong presence and provide our products to new customers in the Asian market.”

Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Micro Packet Optical Networking Platform combines 10G SONET, Ethernet for mobile backhaul
Fujitsu, via Fujitsu Network Communications in the U.S., has upgraded its FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Micro Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP). The upcoming Version 9.1 of the packet-optical transport platform will add multipoint transmission capabilities to the system, enabling integrated OC-192 network access and OC-48 service access and Gigabit Ethernet service delivery. The ES Micro Packet ONP will support of Connection Oriented Ethernet (COE) as well as enable operators to offer Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) certified E-Line services. The systems house expects the new capabilities to play particularly well in mobile backhaul applications as well as utilities’ smart grid networks. The ES Micro now can serve both legacy SONET and packet-based requirements. The MEF-compliant COE service delivery capabilities provide deterministic quality-of-service performance for the Ethernet virtual connections to minimize packet loss, latency, and jitter. The integrated Y.1731 responder and DS1Network Interface Device eliminate the need for external NIDs while providing remote test access for Ethernet and DS1 services. The system supports sub-50-ms restoration times in the event of failure.
According to James Anthony, principal solutions architect, packet optical networking, at Fujitsu Network Communications, the ES Micro can work with the company’s EOX platform to create bridged Ethernet services for both Ethernet over SONET and Ethernet over copper applications. The growing demand for multipoint services was a driver for development of the Version 9.1 capabilities, he added. The FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Micro Packet ONP occupies 2RU and comes in an environmentally hardened package to enable use in outdoor cabinets without additional heating or cooling. The system currently is in lab trials, with general availability expected early in the first quarter of next year.

Cleerline says Non-Strip Fiber reduces costs, eases fiber installation
Cleerline Technology Group, an offshoot of D’Addario & Company, Inc. (yes, the people who make guitar strings, among other things), is offering a new type of fiber designed to ease installation, reduce costs, and improve performance. Thanks to a proprietary, patented coating technology, the company’s “Non-Strip Fiber” (NSF) obviates the need to strip off the acrylate buffer coating found on typical fibers when connectorizing in the field.According to company principal Rob D’Addario, Cleerline developed the coating technology as a way to make fiber easier for technicians to handle when performing mechanical splicing. Instead of the acrylate buffer coating, the Cleerline coating enables the use of a “soft peel identifier” layer on the fiber’s exterior that a technician can remove with his or her fingernails. (The company offers a video demonstration on YouTube.) The technician does not need to clean the exposed fiber with alcohol, as the Cleerline coating remains in place. The fact that the NSF does not require a tool for stripping also reduces the risk of fiber damage and shortened lifetime. Overall, the technology reduces the time required to attach a mechanical connector by 50% to 80%, D’Addario asserted. The coating provides the extra benefit of promoting bend-insensitivity, D’Addario added. Cleerline offers the fiber in both standard singlemode and OM3 multimode variants. The singlemode fiber version offers bend performance commensurate with ITU-T G.657 A2 and B2; the multimode fiber version complies with IEC 60793 A1a and ITU-T G.651.1.Despite the lack of a standard acrylate buffer coating, the fibers come in standard sizes, 50/125-micron for the multimode fiber and 9/125-micron for the singlemode. D'Addario said the NSF currently is more expensive than typical conventional fibers; he did not provide further pricing details.Cleerline introduced the NSF in cabled form this past April and targeted it at the audio/visual market. However, D’Addario said the company has subsequently seen interest in the fiber for other applications, including enterprise networks, fiber to the home (FTTH) drop cables, and in-home networking. This has led the company to consider development of other fiber types – although D’Addario remarked that the company has its hands full meeting the demand for its two current fiber offerings.
