Cloud to Dictate Ethernet Switch Market Growth and Open Up Opportunities for New Entrants According to Dell'Oro Group
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 9, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- The Ethernet Switch market is undergoing a technological transformation in the data center, as virtualization changes where and how applications are connected to end users.  To assess the market impact, Dell'Oro Group has created an advanced research report to analyze how disruptive the Cloud can be and how Ethernet Switch vendors are currently performing in the data center.  The Report details projections for the Ethernet Switch market and for Software Defined Networking in the data center over the next five years. "For the first time in the market, customers are consolidating data centers and connecting those servers to the network with three different speeds, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and 40 Gigabit Ethernet," said Alan Weckel, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group."Moving infrastructure towards the hosted environment of the Cloud and looking towards Software Defined Networking is resulting in a battle for supremacy in data center.  It is also causing unique requirements and solutions across the customers.  The result is that there has never been a better time for new entrants or a better opportunity for existing vendors to gain share."The report also indicates that Avaya, Brocade, Cisco, Dell, Extreme, HP, IBM, and Juniper are the largest vendors in the data center in terms of revenue for 2011.

Time Warner Cable Innovates Ethernet - Analyst Blog
Time Warner Cable Inc. ( TWC ) has initiated a strategy to deliver Ethernet services to its business services customers over the company's existing DOCSIS 3.0 network. Major Cable operators in the U.S. are aggressively deploying high-speed Wideband network based on DCOSIS 3.0 technology as a cost effective bandwidth enhancing solution. The combined DOCSIS 3.0-Ethernet solution sets a terget of achieving 320 Mbps downstreame and 120 Mbps upstreame speed for business enterprises. In fact, DOCSIS 3.0 is helping the cable MSOs to explore some new markets which were hitherto unexplored by them. The loss in the basic video market are now getting more than recovered in the broadband services segment especially in the high-speed Internet access market. The business services segment is gradually becoming a major source of revenue. In the third quarter of 2012, this segment generated revenue of $493 million, up 27.4% year over year. Beside, year-to-date revenue of the business services segment was $1,386 million, showing an improvement of 30.8% year over year. We expect this segment to contribute almost $2 billion to the top line of Time Warner Cable in 2012.Like its closest peer Comcast Corp. ( CMCSA ) and Cablevision Systems Corp. ( CVC ), Time Warner Cable continues to lose residential video subscribers year after year. Massive competition from fiber-based TV services of telecom operators and much cheaper online streaming services provided by some companies are the primary reasons for this pathetic condition of the cable TV operators. The deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 becomes essential for cable MSOs since preference for video-on-demand (watching movie on the Internet) has increased significantly among customers. Another potential future growth area for cable MSOs is the small & medium sized business segment. Various industry researches estimate that the SMB segment is a $30 billion market opportunity.

Ethernet Alliance Paves Way to High-Speed Success at SC12
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 6 – The Ethernet Alliance, a global consortium dedicated to the continued success and advancement of Ethernet technologies today announced it is showcasing an integrated multi-vendor demo in booth 637 on the SC12 expo floor. Scheduled for November 12 – 15 in Salt Lake City, UT, SC12 is the industry’s leading international high-performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis conference. The live demonstration encompasses an array of technologies and highlights Ethernet’s ability to deliver the durable, high-speed performance required by supercomputing applications.“Big Data, Hadoop processing, MPI, automated design applications, storage – all of these very intensive, high-performance computing applications need robust, reliable, low-latency connectivity,” said Chauncey Schwartz, marketing committee chair, Ethernet Alliance, and senior technical marketing manager, QLogic. “The Ethernet Alliance SC12 demo exemplifies Ethernet’s superior interoperability with the integration of multiple diverse Ethernet technologies such as 10GbE and 40GbE, converged Ethernet with FCoE and iSCSI, and 10GBASE-T into a single HPC environment. The demo allows us in a very tangible, real-world way to illustrate Ethernet’s flexibility, interoperability and capacity for sustained, optimum performance even in the most computing-intensive situations.”The Ethernet Alliance SC12 demo is designed to simulate traffic volumes, patterns, and flows commonly found in HPC and data center environments. The network topology spans three layers, including 10GbE attached servers in the access layer that are linked to multiple 10GbE switches in the distribution layer aggregated by two 40GbE core switches. The equipment and technologies featured in the demo were provided by Ethernet Alliance member companies including Amphenol Corporation, Aquantia, Cisco Systems, Dell, Emulex Corporation, Hitachi, Ltd, Ixia, Mellanox Technologies, Ltd., Spirent Communications, TE Connectivity and Volex.“Ethernet is known throughout the industry for its emphasis on interoperability. It is uniquely able address a variety of demanding environments ranging from supercomputing to today’s converged data centers,” said John D’Ambrosia, chairman, Ethernet Alliance, and chief Ethernet evangelist, CTO office, Dell. “With its continued evolution and market-proven flexibility, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, Ethernet is ideally positioned to fuel the next generation of supercomputing applications and advancements.”For more information or to experience EA’s live interoperability demo in person, please visit booth number 637 on the SC12 expo floor.
