Allied Telesis unveils Gigabit fiber iMG ONTs
Allied Telesis has announced immediate availability of four new Gigabit iMG FTTx gateway products. The new outdoor and indoor iMGs are designed to meet such requirements as support for IPv6 migration as well as improved economic performance. Two new outdoor gateways, the AT-iMG2524 and AT-iMG2504, combine integrated triple play and wire-speed Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality. Designed for easy outdoor installation, temperature-hardened electronics modules mount in several models of environmental enclosures with fiber trays. The AT-iMG2524 has a 1000BX (Gigabit) single-fiber bi-directional interface, four 10/100/1000TX LAN ports, and two FXS voice ports. It is optimized for residential applications. The AT-iMG2504 is the same form factor as the AT-iMG2524 but does not have the FXS voice ports. It offers a hardened industrial switch for data connectivity in such applications as utility, transportation and government networks. The two new indoor FTTx units, the AT-iMG1525 and 1505, use the Allied Telesis two-piece indoor gateway design with multiple mounting options. Both products offer an auto-sensing 100/1000 bi-directional fiber WAN interface and USB host port. The AT-iMG1525 features five 10/100/1000TX LAN ports and two FXS voice ports. The AT-iMG1505 is identical, but again with the exception of FXS voice ports. The AT-iMG1505 is designed for residential, small business, and other applications where a small, economic five-port switch solution is needed for data services.

NoaNet deploys ADVA FSP 3000 in Washington state middle mile network
ADVA Optical Networking (FSE:ADV) revealed that Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) has deployed the ADVA FSP 3000 as part of a broadband expansion project in Washington state funded by the broadband stimulus program. NoaNet, a non-profit mutual corporation, announced last month that it has begun construction of the new network, which will see approximately 1,000 miles of new fiber-optic cable that will help deliver broadband services to underserved areas, including a variety of anchor institutions. The wholesale network expansion benefits from a pair of Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) awards that total $140 million, according to NoaNet (see “NoaNet: High-speed broadband expansion underway across Washington state”). In announcing its participation, ADVA Optical Networking cited a $134 million BTOP grant as the underpinnings of the FSP 3000 deployments.NoaNet first deployed ADVA Optical Networking’s platform in 2005. “We’ve had a longstanding, true, and tight partnership with ADVA Optical Networking,” said Mike Henson, chief security officer with NoaNet. “We have trialed many other systems, but ADVA Optical Networking offers unmatched value and range of services. We like the cost, flexibility and ease-of-use of the FSP 3000. Additionally, ADVA Optical Networking’s engineering services and technical support have been instrumental to NoaNet’s ability to expedite reliable, advanced services across Washington state.”“NoaNet understands the impact technology can have on communities,” said John Scherzinger, senior director of sales North America at ADVA Optical Networking. “For example, this network is connecting schools and colleges, radically altering the tools for online collaboration and learning. It’s also connecting hospitals enabling remote diagnosis and telemedicine applications.”

ADTRAN touts Tier 3 carrier FTTH success for Total Access 5000
Setting the stage for an upcoming series of customer announcements, a source at ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) tells Lightwave that increasing success with Tier 3 carrier fiber to the home (FTTH) deployments has helped drive network access market share growth of 136 percent for the company’s flagship Total Access 5000 multiservice access and aggregation platform. And broadband stimulus funding is only part of the reason.Gary Bolton, ADTRAN’s vice president of global marketing, said in an interview today that because Tier 3 carriers generally don’t use as broad a range of network topologies or have as diverse a set of customer densities as their larger Tier 1 and 2 counterparts, they tend to focus initially on only a few applications when evaluating equipment. However, these applications can vary widely; ADTRAN has identified 13 of them, with broadband access, mobile backhaul, and Carrier Ethernet business services support among them.Equipment designed for Tier 3 carriers therefore must provide best-in-class performance across a wide range of feature sets, Bolton asserted. This proves important not only to meet initial requirements but also to take advantage of opportunities the carriers initially don’t anticipate, he added.Bolton said that while broadband stimulus funding has sparked some new FTTH-related sales (see “NTELOS selects ADTRAN Total Access 5000 for broadband stimulus FTTH” as an example), the need to anticipate the transition of the Universal Service Fund to broadband access applications also has driven Tier 3 carrier interest in broadband network upgrades. Merger and acquisition activity, such as ADTRAN customer Frontier Communications’ purchase of networks from Verizon, can lead carriers to buy new equipment as they upgrade recently acquired infrastructure as well, Bolton pointed out.The Total Access 5000 supports a variety of xDSL technologies as well as GPON and Active Ethernet. The company last year announced a proprietary approach to fiber to the node called Ultra Broadband Ethernet (UBE; see “ADTRAN unveils Ultra Broadband Ethernet access architecture”). The technology, which uses an FTTH optical network unit as a node from which Ethernet-enabled services can run over copper to serve eight homes, is now in customer trials with three Tier 1 carriers, Bolton revealed. He declined to say when the technology would be ready for commercial deployment.Bolton also said ADTRAN has seen traction for its packet optical transport system capabilities, designed for traffic aggregation among other uses (see “ADTRAN joins packet optical transport race with Optical Networking Edge family”). He added that customer announcements for the packet optical transport features are upcoming.
