EarthLink completes Eastern Tennessee broadband project
EarthLink, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNK) says it has concluded its Eastern Tennessee Middle Mile Fiber Broadband Project and completed a more than 500-mile fiber-optic network connecting previously underserved communities across the eastern part of the state. In all, EarthLink deployed 15 DWDM-capable points of presence (PoPs) in the state, from which it can provide long-haul DWDM service up to 10 Gbps, plus metro service in Nashville and Memphis.EarthLink's Tennessee Broadband project was funded by $9.4 million in federal stimulus by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) to reach communities designated as underserved by Connected Tennessee – an independent non-profit organization that develops and implements effective strategies for technology deployment, use, and literacy in Tennessee. With this new Eastern Tennessee network in place, EarthLink can now offer its full suite of IT and communications services to businesses and community anchor institutions in these previously underserved areas. EarthLink Carrier will also provide broadband interconnection to other carriers, including last-mile providers, at speeds up to 10 Gbps. Signed agreements are already in place between EarthLink and Morristown Fibernet for 1000 Mbps of dedicated Internet access and Twin Lakes Telephone Cooperative for a Gigabit Ethernet link for IP transport from Cookeville to Huntsville, AL.Phase One of the network completion, announced in March 2011, included a 343-mile overbuild of an existing diverse fiber-optic route from Nashville to Knoxville, and the addition of a new diverse fiber-optic route from Knoxville to Chattanooga. The Phase Two network expansion, completed in June 2011, included deployment of a fiber-optic route from Knoxville to Bristol. POP sites along the route include Knoxville, Morristown, Johnson City, and Bristol. The final Phase Three of the project involved five network interconnection points including Cookeville, Oak Ridge, Cleveland, Sweetwater, and Morristown."For this traditionally underserved region of Tennessee, EarthLink's new broadband network will enable businesses and community organizations such as medical providers and schools to better serve their constituencies," said Jim O'Brien, EarthLink executive vice president of infrastructure engineering and operations. "Businesses of all sizes, as well as carrier and last-mile service providers, will benefit from improved access with broadband speeds up to 10 Gbps. We hope that access to this high-capacity network can serve as an engine for economic growth in the region."

Dakota Carrier Network add 100 Gbps via Ciena
North Dakota’s Dakota Carrier Network (DCN) LLC has added the ability to transport coherent-based 40-Gbps and 100-Gbps wavelengths on its statewide fiber-optic backbone network. DCN deployed the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) to enable the new capabilities, according to the systems house.DCN, a collaboration among 15 independent rural telecommunications companies, serves more than 153,000 customers in 244 communities via 40,000 miles of fiber-optic cable. The service provider received approximately $10.8 million in grant money from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program to upgrade its fiber-optic network. DCN, which already was using 10-Gbps equipment from Ciena, has deployed the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to create an 88-channel DWDM ring infrastructure. The 10G equipment also can be upgraded through the 6500 platform, Ciena adds.“DCN provides the foundation for much of North Dakota’s telecommunications infrastructure, and is thus a critical enabler of the state’s economic advancement,” said DCN’s general manager, Evan Hass. “With Ciena’s industry-leading 6500, we can provide our customers confidence that North Dakota has the communications infrastructure to support delivery of broadband-enabled services including healthcare, education, public safety, and long-term business growth.”“DCN is a great example of a regional service provider that is taking advantage of developments in packet-optical transport technology to help foster economic opportunity for its customers and local community,” according to Chad Whalen, vice president and general manager, North America field operations at Ciena. “Ciena’s coherent optical technology gives DCN a cost-effective and future-proof foundation to ensure its residential, commercial, and government customers have the connectivity required to be successful.”

OCG provides emergency restoration to 75 Broad Street
Metro New York City fiber-optic network services provider Optical Communications Group (OCG) says it has managed to run fiber cable to the major New York City telecom point of presence (PoP) at 75 Broad Street. The new connection has helped restore voice services to thousands of customers affected by Superstorm Sandy, OCG says. The privately held company’s crews worked 46 consecutive hours to run the fiber-optic cable underneath Manhattan and into the facility’s flooded basement, according to OCG. The resulting connection has enough capacity to support 10,000 DS0 lines.OCG is a transport carrier to the building that offers tenants immediate access to any of the carriers within the facility.“The road to restoration for many of the buildings in lower Manhattan is going to be challenging,” states Brad Ickes, president of OCG. “Through this difficult time, OCG is committed to working with those impacted by Sandy to make establishing network connections as seamless as possible. Customers are in need of their services, and OCG’s unique fiber network is prepared to restore lost connections in an efficient way.”OCG is offering its infrastructure to voice carriers looking to recover from the storm who require capacity in OCG’s footprint, which includes New York’s five boroughs and neighboring New Jersey shorelines.
