CyOptics introduces power-efficient 10G TOSA for DWDM SFP+ transceivers
The 1655 (40 km) and 1656 (80 km) series TOSAs are compatible with the 10-Gbps miniature device (XMD) multi-source agreement. The new optical components integrate a high-speed, electro-absorptive modulated laser (EML), a monitor photodiode, and a micro thermo-electric cooler (TEC) in a small form factor metalized ceramic package. The TOSAs operate at data rates of up to 11.3 Gbps and are available in the full range of C-band ITU-T wavelengths.“Network equipment manufacturers are rapidly deploying SFP+ transceivers because they provide a smaller footprint and are more cost-effective than XFP transceivers,” says Ovum’s vice president and practice leader Daryl Inniss. “The new CyOptics TOSAs enable module manufacturers to offer a complete portfolio of SFP+ transceivers. We project 10-Gbps DWDM pluggable transceivers to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 30% from 2010 through 2013, representing one of the fastest growing market segments in the optical component space.”"The new CyOptics TOSAs augment the application space of the SFP+ form factor to now address all types of 10-Gbps applications with the inclusion of metropolitan area 80-km TDM and DWDM links,” says Ed Coringrato, chief executive officer and president of CyOptics. The 1655 and 1656 TOSAs exhibit the same wavelength stability as their 162x predecessors, supporting operation at 100-GHz channel spacing over 20 years, with low hazard rates (~100 FIT).At a package case temperature of -5 to +75C the 165X series consumes a maximum of 0.45 W (40 km, DWDM) and 0.5 W (80 km, DWDM). For industrial temperature applications with a case temperature of -40 to +90C, the TOSAs consume only 0.85 W (40 km, DWDM) and 0.95 W (80 km, DWDM), an approximate 35% reduction from its predecessors, according to representative.

Pulse launches line of SFP connectors, cages
According to the company, the SFP cages are uniquely constructed so as not to deform during press fitting. They are available in through-hole or press-fit configurations. The E81 SFP series is versatile and can handle optical transceiver links as well as transceivers configured to operate as traditional copper RJ45 connectors, which enables the series to be configured to each company's internal networking requirements for balancing load and bandwidth. The cages handle speeds up to 5 gigabits and improve connectivity in high-density printed circuit board (PCB) environments, says the company. They reduce the operating temperature of the transceiver, prevent the transceiver from emitting electromagnetic interference (EMI), and provide mechanical stability. The connector allows easy plug-in of the transceiver, claims Pulse. The cage is made of copper alloy with nickel-plating, which prevents oxidation. Holes in the cage allow air circulation and heat transfer, ensuring that the transceiver temperature stays at less than 70 degrees Celsius.cages come in three sizes: a 2x1 which measures 25.50-mm height x 63.25-mm depth x 14.50-mm width; a 1x1 which measures 9.45-mm x 48.80-mm x 14.75-mm; and a 1x4 which measures 9.20-mm x 48.97-mm x 57.25-mm. All connections are press fit, with a 1x1 available in a through-hole configuration. Pulse says it will customize the SFP to match the customer's required footprint. Pulse's cages have a sturdy construction that can withstand the force of press fitting. They have tight tolerances so they can stack and mate for good transceiver connections and fit on the printed circuit board. The SFP system has a side entry mount and is RoHS compliant. The cage and connector are available separately or as a set, except in the 2x1 series, in which the connector is built in. Prices for the set are $2.00 per SFP port for 1x4 and 1x1 solutions and $8.00 for the combined 2x1 SFP cage and connector solution for quantities of 10,000.
Pulse will be expanding the SFP product line to include a 2xN series, with or without light pipes, and a lower profile advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) 2xN solution with maximum height of 18-mm, which accepts industry-standard SFP optical and copper transceivers.

Avago Technologies debuts 10-GbE SFP+ transceiver
"The SFP+ form factor presents a tremendous opportunity for vendors to add port density and value to their networking products," explains David D'Andrea, director of marketing for Avago Technologies' fiber-optic products division. "Avago is first out of the gate with its 10-Gbit/sec SFP+ transceiver, and our product is already qualified with multiple customers. With our strong technical leadership and our internally developed VCSEL source, we have the expertise and scaleable resources to reliably produce a stable supply of high-quality cost-effective products," he notes. At the core of Avago's 10-Gbit/sec SFP+ transceiver is its own 850-nm VCSELs. The company says these VCSELs leverage technology its reliable 4G VCSEL design, which has undergone over 2 billion device hour testing with no failures. The AFBR-700SDZ also uses multimode fiber, which enables the SFP+ transceiver to extend coverage up to 300 meters.Avago's new optical transceiver supports the SFF-8431 specification for enhanced 10-Gbit SFP+ as well as the SFF-8472 specification for DMI in optical transceivers. The ROHS 6 (restrictions of hazardous substances) compliant, lead-free AFBR-700SDZ delivers real-time temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, laser average output power, and received input power information through a two-wire interface, reports the company. The digital diagnostic interface also adds the ability to disable the transmitter, monitor for transmitter faults, and monitor for receiver loss of signal.
"Avago continues to provide leadership in standards development for next-generation networking technologies," adds D'Andrea. "We were the first to release a production-ready 10-Gbit XENPAK LRM transceiver, which dramatically increased bandwidth for networking applications. With today's announcement of our 10-Gbit SFP+ product, we are once again providing products that give our customers the performance edge to effectively compete in a highly competitive market."According to a recent report issued by IDC, installation of 10 GbE ports will more than double from 1.4 million in 2007 to over 3 million by 2010. The application areas fueling this growth include networking switches and data communication equipment.
