SFP multi-port connectors target storage, networking apps
An integrated lightpipe option provides port status indication and activity feedback. Suitable for networking, storage, and telecommunication applications, such as hubs, routers, servers, and switches, the connectors' high-speed contact design meets 4.25 Gbit/sec SFP requirements, and accommodates speeds up to 10 Gbit/sec.According to the company, the connectors have five port configurations (two-by-one, two-by-two, two-by-four, two-by-five, and two-by-six) and are available in two heights. The medium height of 25.50-mm (1.004") meets industry standards and is consistent with the stacked multi-port modular jack design. The tall height of 29.30-mm (1.154") is designed for 1U applications and is only available in the two-by-one port configuration."With increased port density, as well as up to 12 ports and an integrated lightpipe option, the SFP Stacked Multi-Port Connectors offer design engineers a complete solution," comments Dave Stevenson, product manager for Molex. "Expanding our SFP line further strengthens our commitment to developing products that meet the networking and storage industry's requirements for higher density and increased speeds."According to the company, the connector's modules, when inserted, are oriented "belly-to-belly" to ease module removal from the port. The integrated lightpipes support mono and bi-color SMT Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The connectors accept SFP MSA-compliant modules, allowing installers to configure and upgrade high-speed Ethernet and Fibre Channel (FC) ports. With a pitch of 0.80-mm (0.031"), the connectors are designed with tin-lead press-fit tails, allowing the connector to be removed from the PCB for rework purposes. Tin-plated tails are also available, to meet lead-free requirements.AMCC

AMCC, Avago demo SFP+ 10GBASE-LRM
"Supporting 10 Gbits/sec over 220 meters of OM1/OM2/OM3 multimode fiber in datacenter applications is one of the most challenging aspects of 10GBASE-LRM technology, but AMCC's expertise in electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and forward error correction (FEC) makes it possible to begin the full-scale characterization of the hardware," reports Dr. I-Hsing Tan, 10G SFP+ business development manager for Avago Technologies. "This is a tremendous opportunity to show the market that 10GBASE-LRM SFP+ solutions are going to bring major improvements in port density, reach, power consumption, and cost to the data center. Avago Technologies is pleased to be in a leadership position with AMCC in demonstrating the 10GBASE-LRM interoperability at ECOC," adds Tan.AMCC's QT2025 is a fully integrated 10-Gbit/sec transceiver with fully-adaptive EDC. According to the company, it provides a high-performance interface between a MAC or a switch device and optical modules. The QT2025 is also capable of interfacing directly to SFP+ direct attach copper cabling and to 10GBASE-KR backplanes. AMCC says its transport components allow system designers to offer the most cost-effective, high-performance, high-capacity delivery of enterprise traffic for 10-Gigabit Ethernet datacenter applications."The market for 10-Gbit/sec connectivity solutions is expanding rapidly as more system designers seek to add higher performance links in data centers," reports Aileen Arcilla, senior analyst with IDC. "The demonstration of interoperability provides yet another data point that 10-Gbit/sec datacom traffic can be successfully transmitted over greater distances to meet the highly demanding 10GBASE-LRMspecification. This marks another milestone for deploying 10G in the market."Avago's 10-Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ family of products, including SR, LR, and LRM optical transceivers, brings new levels of speed and high-port density to next-generation networking equipment, say company representatives. The AFBRâ??707SDZ SFP+ 10GBASE-LRM transceiver allows 220-meter operation in all MMF link applications, including OM1 and OM2 legacy fiber cables and new, high-bandwidth OM3 fiber cables. "The interoperability of AMCC's QT2025 with Avago Technologies' market-leading SFP+ modules is showcasing that 10GBASE-LRM is much more power efficient than 10GBASE-T PHYs and more flexible than XFP or X2 modules," contends Neal Neslusan, director of  marketing at AMCC. "The 10-Gbit/sec market is expanding rapidly and system designers are seeking higher densities for their applications as well as reduced powerconsumption.
The interoperability with Avago Technologies demonstrates our continuing commitment to bring power efficiency, longer reach connectivity, and completely validated solutions to market."

Teknovus and Furukawa announce SFP ONU
Furukawa's SFP ONU facilitates the expansion of the traditional switch and router equipment manufacturers into the fiber access market. These manufacturers can now use Furkawa's FITELwave AG1600 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) based on Teknovus's TK3721 for their central office equipment and Furukawa's SFP ONU based on Teknovus's TK3713 for their CPE, enabling high-performance, low-cost fiber access. The FITELwave AG9 offers all of the associated operating cost savings and ease of upgrades associated with SFPs, the company asserts."We chose Teknovus's TK3713 ONU as the basis for our SFP based on its highly integrated design, low-power consumption, and superb management software" stated Mr. Nakamura, senior general manager, Broadband Products Division of Furukawa. "Last year we announced our FITELwave AG8 GBIC with Teknovus inside. We look forward to further supporting the switch and router manufacturers as they move into the growing fiber access market. The SFP fits seamlessly into existing communications equipment, providing service providers with a smooth upgrade to fiber and the associated new revenue streams through the deployment of advanced video services."Greg Caltabiano, president and CEO of Teknovus, added, "The switch and router vendors have been watching the growing pace of fiber access deployments around the world. Now they can take immediate advantage of their extensive installations worldwide. The SFP solution vastly decreases the installation costs of deploying fiber access in MDUs and enables service providers to improve their revenue streams while decreasing OPEX."

Bookham announces 5-Gbit/sec DWDM SFP
The transceiver, which Bookham believes to be the fastest DWDM SFP module available, is designed to operate in high-noise, amplified environments and is targeted at multi-span links for metro networks. The module can deliver output power from +3 dBm to +6 dBm, has channel spacing of 100-GHz, and offers full C- and L-band coverage.Bookham says it has also achieved an uncompensated reach of 400 km at 2.5 Gbits/sec with a multi-rate DWDM SFP, continuing the evolution of the company's high-performance pluggable product range. The portfolio offers DWDM options for all transmission speeds and network protocols, including Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and SONET/SDH. All designs are underpinned by the same proven optical engines, says the company, including the Bookham Avalanche Photodiode (APD) receiver and buried-heterostructure directly-modulated laser."We are continually developing the performance of our pluggable modules to retain our leading technology position in the pluggable WDM sector and meet the breadth of demands from our customer base," reports vice president of telecom sales Yves Le Maitre. "Boasting the highest speed and the longest reach in SFP WDM pluggable optics, coupled with outstanding stability and tolerance to low OSNR links, is a great achievement for the design team. We are confident that we can continue to grow our market share in this highly competitive space."
In addition to these transceivers, the Bookham WDM SFP portfolio offers standard optical power devices in both multi-protocol (SONET, Ethernet, and 4-Gbit/sec Fiber Channel) and multi-rate (100-Mbit/sec to 2.7-Gbit/sec) variants as well as equivalent versions with higher optical power levels (5.5 dBm typical). All these parts are available in C- and L-band wavelengths. For 4-Gbit/sec Fiber Channel applications, Bookham says it has specific DWDM and CWDM parts targeted at 80-km point-to-point links. According to company representatives, this wide range ensures that Bookham is able to meet the demands of customers operating all WDM systems based on pluggable optics.
