Tier-1 North American operator orders more VDSL2/IPTV test gear from EXFO
NOVEMBER 18, 2010 -- EXFO Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSX: EXF) says that a Tier-1 North American network operator has placed a follow-on order in excess of $2 million for EXFO’s AXS-200/635 Triple-Play Tester.EXFO did not further identify the operator. The North American operator, which had shipments exceeding $1.5 million for the Triple-Play Tester in fiscal 2010, selected the AXS-200/635 test platform to support the deployment of VDSL2 and IPTV services over its hybrid network, along with supporting its traditional voice and ADSL2+ Internet service offerings, EXFO says. The AXS-200/635 test platform is designed for deploying, troubleshooting, and repairing voice, ADSL2+, VDSL2, copper, and triple-play services like IPTV.Said Etienne Gagnon, EXFO’s vice-president—Wireline Division and corporate marketing, “This significant follow-on order demonstrates EXFO’s commitment towards fiber-to-the-node [FTTN] deployments, enabling operators to significantly improve their operating efficiency through proactive service verification and qualification of copper and hybrid-technology architectures.”

ZyXEL launches VDSL2 home gateways that ease copper to fiber conversion
NOVEMBER 9, 2010 -- ZyXEL Communications has announced the VSG series of VDSL2 home gateways. ZyXEL says the gateways make the transition from copper to fiber-optic FTTH environments pain-free for both service providers and subscribers.Featuring wireless-N and dual WAN access, the VSG series includes the VSG1432 and the VSG1435 with built-in HPNA over coax adapter for IPTV provisioning.ZyXEL’s VSG series features include:a VDSL2 modem;dual WAN capabilities;four-port 10/100M Ethernet switch;USB 2.0 port;wireless access.Supporting multiple deployments options, the gateways deliver speeds up to 100 Mbps downstream/45 Mbps upstream over copper and Gigabit Ethernet WAN for fiber. This dual WAN functionality offers service providers greater flexibility when migrating from one access technology to the next, as subscribers can use the VSG series for both VDSL2 and FTTH, ZyXEL says. For providers, this helps resolve such logistical issues as stocking different products to ease operational expenses. In addition, the VSG1435 CPE features a built-in HPNA adapter for IPTV deployments, connecting the gateway directly to set-top boxes over coaxial cable. The HPNA adapter offers speeds of up to 320 Mbps and quality of service (QoS) features that support streaming HDTV channels. ZyXEL’s new family of gateways supports high-speed wireless 802.11n technology. The products also support QoS traffic prioritization for triple-play services. The VSG series devices are plug-and-play with TR-069 remote management support to help reduce both deployment and maintenance costs for operators.

Alcatel-Lucent upgrades ISAM FTTN capabilities
OCTOBER 26, 2010 --Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has added GPON and point-to-point fiber capabilities on the 7302 and 7330 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) FTTN platforms. The upgrades are designed to enable service providers to offer a mix of access technologies, using fiber and copper, through the same node. The latest release of the ISAM platform supports open access networks to enable multiple providers to offer content on a single network. The new ISAM platform release also introduces what Alcatel-Lucent describes a the industry’s first application enablement processor. Using the processor and its storage capacity, service providers can cache and replicate content at the node, reducing the demand for bandwidth across the network, Alcatel-Lucent says. Personalized content can be stored and assigned from the node. In the future, an intelligent access network could send different, tailored advertising to two adjacent homes watching the same TV broadcast, for example, the system house adds.“By adding GPON capabilities to our 7302 ISAM and 7330 ISAM FTTN platforms, we are helping our customers to launch their next-generation fiber projects from a solid, familiar and installed base,” said Dave Geary, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s Wireline activities. “This is also the first access node to comply fully with FSAN’s GPON interoperability guidelines. We are committed to interoperability, a principle which translates into shorter times to market and lower engineering barriers for our customers.”
