Sunset Digital uses broadband stimulus to install 100-Gbps technology
Sunset Digital, a provider of fiber-optic broadband connectivity, will use a $24 million award under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act broadband stimulus program to install 100-Gbps technology from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) The upgraded backbone network will support the provision of advanced services for Sunset Digital’s service provider, enterprise, and residential customers throughout northeast Tennessee.The carrier received the $24 million in broadband stimulus funds from the Rural Utility Service’s Broadband Initiatives Program. The project aims to enable a backbone network capable of fully supporting the delivery of broadband access to approximately 2500 underserved homes, schools, emergency responders, government, financial organizations, and medical institutions in the area. Work on the network expansion should be completed in 2015, “if not sooner,” according to Ciena.Sunset Digital will deploy Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and use Ciena’s management offering for simplified service activation, which includes service delivery, service visualization, and network monitoring.“Demand for high-speed, high-capacity bandwidth services is increasing not only in large metropolitan areas, but also in rural areas like those served by Sunset Digital,” said Paul Elswick, president at Sunset Digital. “Even those providers that do operate here cannot purchase the bandwidth they require at low enough cost. By providing greater broadband access to our customers, Ciena’s 100G coherent optical will help position us to better serve our community and help spur economic development in the region.”“High-speed broadband connectivity has become critical to the economic health and development of any region by enabling advanced applications for healthcare, government, and commerce,” added Chad Whalen, vice president and general manager, North America field organization at Ciena. “In building a 100G optical backbone now, Sunset Digital is helping less-urbanized areas of the Southeastern U.S. become immediately compatible with modern broadband commerce, and enabling them to grow seamlessly as technology changes and the demand increases for even more bandwidth capacity.”

MODE-GAP project makes progress in mode-division multiplexing
Members of MODE-GAP, the European collaborative R&D project which is part of the EU 7th Framework Programme on next-generation internet infrastructure, presented no fewer than three post-deadline papers at the ECOC 2012 conference in Amsterdam.Those papers include the results of a 73-Tbps transmission experiment using mode-division multiplexing (MDM) over a multimode optical fiber. The other two papers report WDM and data transmission over hollow photonic band-gap fiber at. The project’s aim is to combine both techniques -- MDM and 2-µm transmission – to dramatically increase the transmission capacity of optical fiber.Half-way through its four-year program, MODE-GAP has been developing novel transmission fibers, and the associated enabling technologies. These include novel rare-earth doped optical amplifiers, transmitter and receiver components, and data processing techniques to increase the capacity of broadband networks. In addition to the post-deadline papers, MODE-GAP and its members presented 10 technical papers in the main ECOC conference describing progress across all aspects of the project.On the Sunday, MODE-GAP hosted a workshop in conjunction with the Japanese EXAT project, titled “Optical Components and Characterization Requirements for SDM Networks.” Spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) based on MDM is the approach MODE-GAP is focusing on to significantly increase the transmission capacity of a single optical fiber. This is achieved by using multiple modes within the same core of few-mode fibers (FMF) as independent channels, each with capacity similar to that of an individual singlemode fiber.“Post deadline papers that are accepted at ECOC reflect only the latest leading edge results,” said MODE-GAP project manager Dr Ian Giles. “Any organization would be proud to have a single such paper approved, and so presenting three highlights the significant progress the project is achieving and to truly world class levels.”The organizations that compose MODE-GAP include the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre, ESPCI ParisTech, OFS Fitel Denmark APS, Phoenix Photonics, the COBRA Institute at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Eblana Photonics Ltd, Nokia Siemens Networks GMBH & Co. KG, and the Tyndall National Institute of University College Cork.

Alcatel-Lucent provides SK Broadband with 100G network
South Korea is one of the world’s most connected societies with high expectations in terms of service quality on its communications networks. The technology will also give SK Broadband the ability to adapt the network quickly to meet rapidly changing patterns in data traffic and customer demand, and will be able to support very-high-capacity data transmission of up to 8.8 Tbps in the future.Alcatel-Lucent is supplying SK Broadband with its 100G optical coherent technology as part of the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), which employs the company’s recently introduced Photonic Service Engine (PSE), 400G chip (see "Alcatel-Lucent makes 400-Gbps play"). With the 1830 PSS, SK Broadband can support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, making it possible to reuse its existing optical infrastructure and expand capacity as needed to meet growing demand.
