LeCroy Updates 10/40/100G Test
CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. -- LeCroy Corporation introduces software and hardware test solutions for 10GBase-R and 40/100GBase-R4 Ethernet. The full lineup includes the LabMaster 10 Zi real-time oscilloscopes with 4 channels at up to 36 GHz bandwidth (expandable to 80 channels), the industry’s first 10 Gb/s optical-to-electrical (O/E) converter for use with real-time oscilloscopes, automated compliance software packages for SFI/SFP+ and 10GBase-KR, new SDAIII-CompleteLinQ multi-lane serial data and crosstalk analysis toolsets, and the SierraNet M408 protocol test system. These tools provide the most complete compliance, debug and analysis capability from single-lane electrical Ethernet through multi-lane optical signaling.Early 10 Gb/s electrical and optical development was validated using sampling oscilloscopes. However, sampling oscilloscopes lack the ability to acquire contiguous data, and are unable to perform the necessary pattern-based random and deterministic jitter decomposition. As 10 Gb/s speeds become more widely deployed, and as real-time oscilloscopes have become available with equal or greater bandwidth than sampling oscilloscopes, engineers have come to prefer a real-time oscilloscope for 10 Gb/s system validation and debug. LeCroy’s 10 Zi oscilloscopes provide four channels from 25 to 36 GHz bandwidth, with modular expandability up to 80 channels using ChannelSyncTM architecture. This makes them ideal for four (or more) lane acquisition and analysis using direct cabled inputs four differential signals common in 40GBASE systems. Furthermore, as users migrate to 28 Gb/s speeds, the LabMaster 10 Zi acquisition modules can be upgraded to as much as 65 GHz of bandwidth.LeCroy’s new OE695G wide-band optical to electrical (O-E) convertor is the world’s first such device to be compatible with a real-time oscilloscope, making it ideal for system integrators who utilize both electrical and optical signals in the same platform. Previous O-E solutions were dedicated hardware modules for sampling scope mainframes only, limiting their utility for jitter measurement and analysis on 10 Gb/s signals. The OE695G utilizes a built-in software reference receiver to support 10 Gb/s Ethernet standards through 10 GbE FEC (11.095 Gb/s), as well as supporting a variety of other speeds for common Fibre Channel and ITU telecom standards, or custom settings up to 12.5 Gb/s. The OE695G is usable with both single-mode or multi-mode fiber across a broad wavelength range from 750 to 1650nm.

Euronews: Royal Rumpus at Telefonica
Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF), América Móvil S.A. de C.V. , Telekom Austria AG (NYSE: TKA; Vienna: TKA), KPN Telecom NV (NYSE: KPN), Bouygues Telecom , Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS) (NYSE: MBT) and Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) are just some of the names in today's regional news melting pot.The King of Spain's son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin, has temporarily stepped down from his role as chairman of Telefónica International USA while he faces charges of embezzlement, reports Reuters. Urdangarin, whose recently-renewed contract at the Spanish operator is believed to come with an annual salary of €1.5 million (US$1.88 million), faces allegations that a sports charity he previously ran was involved in the misuse of millions of dollars of public funds. Is this the summer of scandal? (See Euronews: Summer Scandal Special.)The growing influence of Carlos Slim is starting to show in Europe, where the two operators in which Slim's América Móvil invested earlier this year -- Telekom Austria and KPN -- are to discuss potential synergies, according to this Dow Jones report. (See Euronews: Slim Takes a Breather.)Bouygues Telecom is the latest French operator to feel the impact of Iliad (Euronext: ILD)'s entry into the mobile market: It lost 450,000 customers during the first half of the year and saw its revenues drop by 7 percent as a result. The operator's parent company now expects its telecom division to generate full year earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of €900 million ($1.13 billion), about 10 percent lower than previously forecast and 29 percent down on 2011. The company is also cutting 556 jobs to save money. See the full details in this earnings release. France's other operators have also been hit by Iliad's competitive offers. (See Euronews: FT's Q1 Suffers Free Fall, Euronews: AlcaLu Bites Into the Core and Euronews: Iliad Gets the All-Clear on Free Mobile.)A one-time, non-cash $1.1 billion write down related to its operations in Uzbekistan resulted in a second quarter net loss for Russian operator MTS, but excluding that item the service provider reported better than expected operating results, reports Reuters. See this earnings release for all the numbers.Ericsson's ConsumerLab has published a report on the potential impact of mobile commerce in sub-Saharan Africa, where, the vendor finds, service providers should focus on winning the trust of women, who tend to manage domestic finances.Pat Rabbitte, Ireland's Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, will launch a National Broadband Plan for Ireland on Thursday Aug. 30. The plan will include details of how the Irish government will "reduce the burden of red tape for commercial investors in next generation broadband infrastructure" and "provide next generation broadband access in those areas of the country the market will not serve using commercial criteria alone."

Crunch Time for Google Fiber
Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Access, writes in his blog that 98 "fiberhoods" (areas with 250 to 1,500 homes) have met their pre-registration goals as Google Fiber's first "rally" in the Kansas Cities hits the home stretch. Consumers in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., have until Sept. 9 to pay $10 to pre-register for Google Fiber, which will support 1Gbit/s broadband services and a video bundle. "If your fiberhood doesn't hit its goal, we're not sure if or when we'll come back again. So it's important for you and your neighborhoods to pre-register now, before the rally ends," Lo writes. So, no pressure, folks. Google expects to start lighting up services "within a few weeks" after the first rally deadline. Currently, the Hanover Highs section of Kansas City, Mo., and Greenway Fields in Kansas City, Kan., remain first in line for Google Fiber. (See Google Fiber to Fix Apartment Snag and How Long Will Google Keep the Fiber Flowing? )The TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO) Stream, a video transcoding device, goes on sale Sept. 6 for $130. When linked to a TiVo Premiere or the four-tuner Premiere Q box, Stream shuttles live and recorded video wirelessly to up to four mobile devices, including iPhones and iPads. This AllThingsD review found it impressive, noting that TiVo is also developing an Android-compatible app. It's expected that some of TiVo's MSO partners will eventually offer the new streaming device to their customers. (See TiVo's Stream for Every Screen and TiVo & Pace Debut Docsis 3.0-Powered Gateway .)Sticking with TiVo, Sweden's Com Hem AB revealed in its second-quarter earnings presentation (PDF) that it will offer its TiVo-powered service to roughly 1.6 million homes in the second quarter of 2013 (Thanks to @TechWzrd for the tip.) Com Hem, which has a five-year exclusive with TiVo, is poised to be the first service provider to offer a TiVo box in tandem with an IPTV service. (See TiVo Makes IPTV Breakthrough at Com Hem .)Cox Communications Inc. Director of Network Architecture Jeff Finkelstein tells IP&TV News that the operator is considering a content delivery network (CDN) to provide network DVR and IP video services, but acknowledges that the return on investment regarding CDNs is still unknown and remains a "big concern." He adds that the operator is also considering using switched digital video (SDV)-style methods for IP video.Country Cablevision has begun to deploy a FTTH network in the rural mountain counties of Mitchell and Yancey, N.C. The deployment, which will feature more than 100 Clearfield Inc.
