Bell Aliant adds FTTH communities and improves services
Canadian carrier Bell Aliant (TSX: BA) has boosted the data rates and number of TV apps its FibreOP fiber to the home (FTTH) customers can expect. It also has made the service available to five new communities.Bell Aliant said it will spend CAN$11.5 million to expand its FTTH network to 22,000 more homes and businesses in the Atlantic Canadian communities of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, Campbellton and Hampton in New Brunswick, and Digby and Antigonish in Nova Scotia. The carrier said it also will add new homes and businesses to its network in Greater Moncton. The carrier had previously announced FibreOP FTTH builds in Edmundston, Grand Falls, Woodstock, and Sussex, New Brunswick; Yarmouth and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; and Sudbury, Ontario.“More than 574,000 homes and businesses now have access to this technology, and we’re growing our reach every day,” said Andre LeBlanc, vice president, residential markets, Bell Aliant. “Our FibreOP network has innovation built in. That’s why we call it future-proof, and that’s how we’re able to increase speeds and add new apps for our customers -- absolutely free.”For example, the most popular FibreOP Internet service bundle features download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (an increase from 30 Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 30 Mbps. Meanwhile, the TV roster includes a new Weather Network as well as the Galaxie app, from which subscribers can access a variety of music. The top FibreOP fastest Internet speeds are up to 250 Mbps downstream and upload speeds of up to 30 Mbps.

China Mobile to deploy Huawei FTTW gear for WLAN mobile backhaul
China Mobile Shangdong Branch (Shangdong Mobile) deploy Huawei’s GPON fiber-to-wireless (FTTW) offering in 17 cities of Shandong province to backhaul wireless local area network (WLAN) data streams and help Shangdong Mobile provide 54-Mbps Internet access for 50,000 WLAN hotspots in schools, offices, transport hubs, hotels, leisure places, downtown areas, and residences. The FTTW equipment will be deployed in Shangdong Mobile’s E2E mobile backhaul network, covering the optical line terminal (OLT) in the central office, the optical distribution network (ODN), and the optical access equipment for multi-dwelling units (MDUs).The combination of WLAN and existing mobile communication networks provides high-speed mobile broadband access, says Huawei. This enables users to work away from their offices, browse websites, send and receive emails, watch online movies, and download large files on the fly.

JT Global implements Netadmin Systems software for FTTH
JT Global, formerly known as Jersey Telecom, is rolling out Netadmin System’s FTTH open access network management software as part of a deployment that aims to reach 42,000 premises on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. Following a pilot scheme that has been in place since December 2011, the software tool will now be applied across the entire project to automate the service fulfillment and assurance processes, including a user-friendly platform from which JT and other service providers on and off the island can launch services.Netadmin is working on the Jersey project alongside other technology partners, including Cisco, Genexis, and Dimension Data.“With the implementation of a full FTTH network planned, and such an advanced network management system soon in place, Jersey is one of the most innovative and commercially viable environments to do business,” says Dave Newbold, JT’s chief operations and technology officer. The platform provides functional support for automated services fulfillment, including inventory and resource management, ticket management, service level agreement (SLA) statistics, and faster network troubleshooting.
