Cherokee Communications deploys Zhone Technologies MXK platform
Southeast Oklahoma ILEC Cherokee Communications has decided to deploy the MXK platform from Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) to support delivery of triple-play services, initially via VDSL2.Cherokee will deliver data, video and voice in one platform over a pure packet access network, says Zhone. The MXK’s VDSL2 interfaces will support bandwidth speeds up to 100 Mbps. The derived POTS lines will also enable the service provider to take advantage of a low-cost packet network and still provide subscribers with traditional POTS service."For our growing business, we needed an access vendor with effective network management capabilities," said Samuel Sanchez, operations manager at Cherokee Communications. "The increased density, scale, and performance provided by the Zhone MXK and zNID Optical Network Terminals [ONTs] allow us to simplify our network complexity and address any challenges. The primary reason we chose the Zhone solution was its ability to provide multiple services on a single platform, including Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). This network upgrade allows us to provide advanced communications and connectivity to our residential and business customers."

BTI Systems 2Q12 sets growth record
Bucking a trend of soft sales among suppliers in the optical transport systems niche, BTI Systems reports that revenues from its metro-focused product line grew more than 25% year over year and bookings increased 30%, setting a record for the company. The quarter marked the sixth consecutive quarter of bookings growth, the company asserts. Backlog and market share also grew during the quarter, BTI Systems management adds.As a privately held company, BTI Systems did not release specific numbers for any of these elements. However, the company did say that it has added 30 new customers during the first half of the year, driven largely by application of its packet-optical transport systems to mobile backhaul applications (see, for example, “BTI Systems touts Asian success”). It also continues to see benefits from its OEM partnership with Fujitsu Network Communications. With this wind in its sails, the company says it will continue its expansion plans, including adding headcount worldwide. For example, the company expects a 30% bump in its Massachusetts-based U.S. headquarters."Our continued growth is reflective of our end-to-end solutions that are fully integrated and designed to enable service and content providers to capture new market opportunities," said Steve Waszak, president and CEO, BTI Systems. "Our management platform is unequaled in accelerating services delivery and operational leverage, enabling our customers to drive revenues and increase profits from advanced, high-value service offerings. We look forward to continuing to help our global customers capitalize on the enormous growth of mobile traffic, broadband content and demand for cloud communications."

Ukraine's Eurotranstelecom taps Ciena for 100-Gbps coherent optical technology
After the 2011 collaboration on the first 100-Gbps link in Eastern Europe (see "ETT, Ciena deploy first commercial 100G network in Eastern Europe"), Ukrainian telecommunication operator Eurotranstelecom (ETT) and Ciena announced the nationwide rollout of Ciena’s 100-Gbps coherent optical technology in ETT’s backbone network. With this deployment, ETT extends its original 100-Gbps network connecting Kiev and Kharkov to cover all major Ukrainian regional centers, including Lvov, Donetsk, Odessa, and Dnepropetrovsk. It also provides high-speed support for traffic from European, Ukrainian and Russian operators.“As 100-Gbps adoption gathers momentum globally, large demand-driven deployments such as this one are also testament to the bandwidth explosion that the Russia/CIS region is going through at the moment,” says Sergei Fishkin, Ciena’s regional managing director for Russia, CIS and the Baltics. “With the growing adoption of high-bandwidth applications such as cloud computing, high-capacity networks are becoming more instrumental than ever before in allowing operators to meet the requirements of their customers.”With the rollout, ETT can operate 10-, 40-, and 100-Gbps channels simultaneously while providing a seamless upgrade to higher capacities as bandwidth requirements on its network change in the future.ETT operates its own underground fiber-optic cable network along railways, covering all major regions in Ukraine. The operator has its own national DWDM, SDH, and IP/MPLS networks, offering IP transit, data and voice transmission, lambda services, collocation, dark fiber renting, and maintenance services to clients.
