Scotland sets rural broadband fund
The Government of Scotland has unveiled Community Broadband Scotland, a program backed by £5 million in funding that is designed to help rural community groups attract broadband services to their areas. The program, which will launch in October, will start with offering advice and support for community groups via a telephone helpline, a website, and consultants. The £5 million will be used as seed funding over the next three years for broadband projects. A small number of such projects will receive funding in the first round and will be used as case studies for future efforts. Up to £1 million will be available during this initial phase.Community Broadband Scotland will initially target communities deemed to be among the 10-15% least likely to see the benefits of a broadband upgrade under the Government’s Step Change 2015 Programme.“Everyone recognises the importance of access to broadband to ensure that our local communities flourish,” said Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, Alex Neil. “Broadband should not be considered a luxury in rural areas; it is essential to enhance the quality of life and stimulate the growth of the local economy.“This investment of £5 million, over the next three years, will see targeted support being provided to community projects to enable them to deliver broadband solutions for their areas,” he continued. “Increasing access to broadband is a key priority area for the Scottish Government, and we are currently progressing plans to develop a world class digital infrastructure by 2020.”The village of Elvanfoot, South Lanarkshire, will be among the first communities accepted into the program. "We're absolutely thrilled to have this project initiated in Elvanfoot and are really excited about being able to access advice and support to get our local community broadband-connected, with all the social and economic benefits that connectivity will bring," said Amanda Burgauer, secretary of the Elvanfoot Development Group.

Network core switches to drive Fibre Channel switch and adapter demand says Dell'Oro Group
Revenues from Fibre Channel switch and adapter revenues will near $3 billion in 2016, having grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 2%, says market research firm Dell’Oro Group. The company made the prediction in its latest "SAN 5-Year Forecast Report.""Although Ethernet has become an increasingly popular storage network technology, Fibre Channel is being used to backend the Ethernet systems," said Casey Quillin, senior analyst at Dell'Oro Group. "We forecast a portion of the server aggregation layer to shift away from Fibre Channel, which will result in a decline in port shipments in the outer years. However, we expect overall prices to rise with advanced data management features and the shift to 16 Gbps, resulting in positive growth throughout our forecast horizon."The report also covers alternative storage-area network (SAN) technologies, such as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Vendors currently shipping FCoE enabled equipment include Cisco, HP, Brocade, Juniper, Emulex, and QLogic. The new "SAN 5-Year Forecast Report" covers manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, and port shipments by speed. This includes 1 Gbps (historical data), 2 Gbps (historical data), 4 Gbps, 8 Gbps, and greater than or equal to 16 Gbps for Fibre Channel switches and adapters, and 10-Gbps FCoE switches, controllers, and adapters.

Kotura unveils SFP-VOA
Kotura, Inc. has introduced a new version of its Ultra Variable Optical Attenuator Module in a pluggable small-form package (SFP-VOA). The variable optical attenuator contains an integrated optical power monitor function that provides feedback to the Ultra VOA in a control loop design.Built using Kotura’s silicon photonics expertise, the Ultra VOA provides typical response times of less than 1 microsecond. It works over the 1525- to 1570-m C-Band range, providing an attenuation range of 0 to 25 dB. The company suggests such performance makes the Ultra VOA useful for such functions as signal modulation, transient suppression, and fast power control in agile WDM networks. The fact that the VOA has no moving parts improves its reliability; Ultra VOAs Kotura has produced have logged more than a billion device hours in the field, the company asserts (see, for example, "Kotura single channel VOA features sub-microsecond response time").The module implements the control loop and feedback circuit using a 5% tap and photodetector."Customers like the option of an industry-standard pluggable package," said Xavier Clairardin, vice president of product marketing at Kotura. "Our Ultra VOAs are already among the most widely used in the industry. The 20-pin SFP package means that designers can better utilize board space by moving the attenuation function to the front panel. Our new product meets the growing trend towards pluggable optics in telecommunications equipment designs."The SFP-VOA has lead times of 8-10 weeks for quantities of up to 100.
